Guestbook comments from the owner

"Excellent Christmas Retreat. We have stayed at the cottage three times for Christmas. Twice at Tantramar and the last stay at Seagates. Our family of adult children is scattered and each year we pick a cottage to get together to celebrate the season. Over the years we keep coming back to these quaint cottages overlooking the ocean to reaquaint as a family. The cottages are extremely well appointed with all the conveniences for cooking and have a very homey atmosphere with the fireplaces and all the games in the cupboard for evening activity. Great places to stay. Will be going back soon."

What an incredible place!

  • 4 of 5

Our family really enjoyed the cottage - it was such a cozy place (and so much history) and had everything we needed....including the beautiful views - just steps to the beach and sitting at night on the deck enjoying the propane fire pit looking out over the water, it was awesome.... can't wait to be able to go back! Thanks so much for Janet and Yadira! Was such a nice treat for us to have this little get away!

Fantastic cabin and view

  • 5 of 5

I wish we could have stayed longer! From the moment we arrived everything was perfect. A gorgeous view, super clean cabin, comfortable bed and a great kitchen. We will try to return for a longer stay in the summer. Many thanks Janet.

PS. One of my guests forgot an important item at the cabin which Janet promptly returned through the mail, delivered a mere 2 days later. Thanks for the super service :-)

perfect & peaceful

  • 5 of 5

The stay was absolutely perfect! The quaint cottage is decorated marvelously, in fact I kept on reminding myself that I have to ask the owner where she bought this and that. It is pristinely clean, unbelievable. Also, 150% fully equipped, kitchen and with all amenities you wish for to cook. The view is stunning every day, rainy or sunny. Although located around neighbors, it is secluded enough and lots of four legged visitors grazing around in the early morning. The deers were beautiful to watch. The chimney is potent, gives heat, and gives to both side, living room and bedroom; a very peaceful way to fall asleep with the light of the fire. If I have one thing to say about this cottage is that I would live there forever and that the photos in the website ( which are beautiful too) do not transpire the peaceful feeling about this place. A lot of happy people have stayed there, and one more ( me) will hope to come back!

A perfect Salt Spring Stay

  • 5 of 5

Tantramar is perfectly located on Vesuvius beach with the lovely warm waters of Vesuvius Bay at your doorstep. Kayaking is wonderful in this area. The cottage is a 7 minute drive to Ganges for shopping and exploring.

Tantramar Cottage has been beautifully updated over the years without losing any of its historic feel. You will have EVERYTHING you need for cooking the delectable Salt Spring ingredients you will find on the island.

You can sip wine by the outdoor fire on the deck, under the glass roof of the porch during a rainstorm or in front of a fire in the cozy living room. You will feel the burdens of the workaday work slip away. Janet is a fantastic host- and always ready to help make your visit absolutely perfect!

We consider Tatramar to be a second home- we love it and I am sure you will too!

Cosy Cottage on Vesuivus Bay

  • 4 of 5

Upon arrival the sun shone on a most glorious patio/garden/ huge covered deck.

The Wi-Fi was not working, but my handy husband soon fixed this, always good to be

ready for anything with a VRBO rental.

The light, and bright location, reflects the sea, and it is a great area for photography.

Find the air of the trees, and gentleness.

Yachts moor in the bay, canoes, lots of sea birds, and sunsets as it faces North West.

Natural, and organic, leave the make up at home, you are part of looking after

this Organic thoughtful Island home, and will be asked to compost/recycle

and be aware of nature. Groceries a 20 minute drive away. A local shop closes when it feels

like it so don't rely on this store for milk/bread/butter and newspaper.

A garden area with fresh herbs, lemon trees, where our well behaved dog ran down

to a stone beach through the double wooden gates was mowed, and well kept.

We did see some brave swimmers in the sea, and Vesuvius Ferry was a 10 minute drive away,

which we could see dock from the lovely view towards Ladysmith on Vancouver Island.

A good licenced fish/chips take away, and more restaurant is a 10 minute stroll away.

The white inside of the house is turn of the century, but dry, good fireplace with lots of

dry wood for chilly October nights. The bedrooms were clean and dry with windows that opened.

The one and only claw foot bathroom had no fan for ventilation, and this could be offered.

A bug screen for the front patio door would be a good idea.

A set of wooden shutters at the windows would be a good idea to shut out ferry lights.

If you are versatile this will work, and always hot water, even though there were 6 adults.

The master bedroom has a patio door with bug screen. The fireplace is a two way viewing

so you will see the living room, and the lights on the harbour?

Could do with a sort out in the cupboards before arrival, so there is a food storage area.

We drove to the main shopping area of Ganges which has all you could wish for.

Comfy cosy not luxurious, it is a good spot for a family of 6 for a 3 night stay.

The boys watched the NFL on their computers on Sunday, so connection good.

Stove old, Fridge old, Fridge outside needs moving from the back fire door exit.

A good time at The Saltspring Island Apple Festival which is every October.

Check the Saltsping website.

Like the website offers the view is what you see and enjoy finding this Cosy Island Cottage

waiting for you on Saltspring Island. in BC.

Owner's Response: Hi Sandi, Thank you so much for your review and thank you very much for helping us out with the wifi connection. The day you arrived, the old router gave up the ghost and we were able to quickly get a new one but when our amazing housekeeper went to set it up, she had nothing but problems. We had a call into our island IT expert, but thanks to your husband and his techy ability, this wasn't necessary. We really appreciate your help. Just a couple of clarifications, the house faces south-west, not north-west so we have sunsets all year around which is so wonderful. Ganges, the nearest town with several grocery stores is a 7 minute drive from Vesuvius, and yes, the local corner store/café does close and open at whim though it usually is open during the main part of the day. The second fridge on the back porch blocks an unused door from the back bedroom (which used to be the laundry room!) however, we have a back door from the kitchen as well as the French doors from the master bedroom and living room out to the front which means there are several doors to exit out for any reason. Thanks for the suggestion about clearing out a couple of the cupboards for groceries, that is a great idea. The kitchen is very well stocked with spices, coffee and tea, oils and vinegars and enough essentials for even large dinner parties etc. but we will make an effort to leave a couple of the lower drawers free. The large cupboard above the fridge is always empty which is where we usually keep our groceries. We are glad you had a great holiday and are pleased to hear you didn't run out of hot water, even with 6 of you there. Thank you very much for helping out the environment by recycling and composting, we have tried to make that an easy choice by providing the recycling containers on the back porch and compost bucket and blue bin under the sink. As well, all of the cleaning supplies and soaps are natural and environmentally friendly as well. We hope to see you again for another stay.

Island Heaven

  • 4 of 5

Staying at Tantramar, as we have several times previously, is an integral part of an annual Salt Spring kayak trip with several girlfriends. The cottage is idyllic and tranquil - almost so much so that we are tempted to forego all the wonderful things the Island has to offer - but not quite. Returning to Tantramar after each day's adventure was like coming home - welcoming, comfortable and ultra relaxing. We will be back!
