All modern facilities are close by yet an ancient drover's path passes through our grounds; the local sheep are taken up to higher pastures in June and return via the Chateau, generally on the first Sunday in September. Local activities include crystal-clear river swimming, tennis, mountain biking, horse riding, donkey trekking, fishing, canoeing, hang gliding, caving, gold prospecting, pottery courses, painting, play golf, photography, nature walks, naturism, Mining museums and of course the Mediterranean coast is only 1.5 hours away where you can see wild horses and flamingos in the Camargue.

You can do cross-country skiing if there is enough snow at Mas de la Barque, which is a 35 minute drive.

Travel:: Ryanair offer flights to Nimes Airport (1 hour's drive away from the house) from Luton, Liverpool. Montpellier airport is just a further 30 minutes away. Other useful airports are Marseille and Avignon. Trains to Avignon and Nimes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

… for food, etc. Great pizza from La Grand Combe. Saw baby boars three or four times. Pair of foxes. Lots of butterflies in different colours. Bees galore! Well stocked give. Hot water always on tap. Watched starry nights. So clear.

Property fine in our favourite part of France. Ales is close with all facilities, but the house is in a perfect spot, overlooking the valley

Owner's Response: Many thanks Peter & Barbara for your comments. It was lovely to meet you both this holiday as I missed you last year when you came to stay. I do hope you are both well, as too of course Hattie and her sister! Looking forward to see you all again next year. Best wishes, Maggie

A quiet getaway

  • 4 of 5

We found Mas de Grailles a pleasant and convenient base from which we could explore the region. As two couples the upstairs, downstairs arrangement worked well providing some privacy, but plenty of opportunity to spend time together.

The view across the forested valley is very peaceful and we even managed to spot a wild pig or two, but you've got to get up early. Catching site of the bat that lives next to the barn requires lots of time on the verana drinking good wine.

The village of Portes is nothing to get excited about and the path to it is mainly beside a busy road, La Grand Combe is a much better bet if you're shopping for essentials.

The house has all you'll need for a comfortable stay, but a car is essential. We travelled as far as Aix en Prevence in a day and if you get a chance you should take a day trip up the Tarn.

Maggie was very helpful and attentive and we have no hesitation in recommending you consider spending time here.

Un excellent séjour au Mas des Grailles

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Owner's Response: We were delighted to have this charming family to stay at Mas des Grailles. They clearly very much enjoyed the peace and quiet and the beauty of the surroundings. The house was left in immaculate condition which is always a big bonus for the house owner !

A typical Cevenol mas in a truly unspoilt area in the centre of the South of France, renowned by Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Travels with a Donkey'. The hills of the Cevennes National Park are far enough from the frenzy of the Mediterranean coast yet only just over an hour away. Steeped in history, Portes is North West of Nimes nestling in the foothills of the Cevennes between the town of Ales to the south and the villages of Chamborigaud and Genolhac to the north. The stunning Chateau de Portes dates back to the Middle Ages. Magnificent views. The nearest town is Ales (15 minutes) with all the modern facilities associated with a busy town. Shops in Portes are within walking distance: there is a bar/tabac and bakery. Three good restaurants within a 10 minute drive. Supermarkets can be found in Chamborigaud or La Grand'Combe 10 minutes away. Museums, mines, caves, rivers and lakes, golf, horse & donkey rides, tennis, swimming are all close by.

Other Activities: Clear river swimming, gliding, canoeing, donkey treks...

Golf: More and more golf courses are springing up in the area and you would have a good choice or 3 or 4 within 30 minutes drive. The nearest is the Golf d'Ales Ribaute which is only 10 minutes from Anduze. To the north there is Golf de La Garde-Guerin at Villefort. Further details available at the house.
