THE BUILDING AND AMENITIES
The flat is in a typical Scottish tenement, as built by the Victorians. Expect an imposing grey stone, bay windowed exterior, communal hall with its original tiled walls, wide stone staircase with cupola, and friendly neighbours. Don't expect a lift.
The guests have access to all the amenities the flat enjoys. There is a shared garden behind the building and the downstairs hall and stairs are shared with the other six flats in the building. There are two fold up chairs in the hall which can be taken to garden or to the park across the road on sunny days.
There is free parking in the street outside and free evening parking in the adjacent street.
The flat is in the heart of the urban village of Shandon with its friendly atmosphere, and excellent local shops and eateries (including a deli, a coffee shop, flower shop and beauty parlour and a good Chinese takeaway). We're 5 minutes from the vibrant Fountainbridge area, with cinemas, restaurants and a supermarket. Sainsburys superstore is five minutes in the other direction.
Dalry Swimcentre, restored Victorian bathing pool, is 10 minutes away. Craiglockhart Leisure Centre is newly refurbished, with gym, tennis, canoeing and sports facilities.
Our favourite local pub and restaurant, The Caley Sample Room, is five minutes on foot and stocks an huge selection of beers, wines and whiskies. Their food is award winning.
Across the road is lovely Harrison Park, which has a large children's play area and plenty of room for either kicking a ball around or enjoying the sunshine. You can walk or cycle the path beside the Union Canal (across the park) or hire a boat or canoe.
GETTING TO THE FLAT AND GETTING AROUND
From the airport take the tram or express bus to Haymarket mainline railway station. (20/25 minutes) The flat is 5 minutes by car/taxi or 15 minutes by numbers 4, 34 or 44 bus from Haymarket station. There is a taxi rank at the station.
Or, take the number 35 bus direct from the airport to our nearest bus stop on Slateford Road - but please be aware that this does take longer than the tram/Airport bus option.
An excellent bus service (5 minutes walk away in Slateford Road) runs to the City Centre, (no 34) Edinburgh Castle, the Old Town and Leith (no 35) and Haymarket Station (4, 44). A 7 minute walk takes you to the nos 10 and 27 services which take a different, very attractive route into town and the 27 stops right at the Museum of Scotland, then takes you down into Edinburgh's Georgian New Town!.
You can walk or cycle into the city centre in 25 minutes along the Union Canal and this lovely commute has Edinburgh folk using it in droves
