Pescaglia Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

Traditional stone farmhouse sleeps 11 with large pool, ideal for children

Tucked away on a lovely rural hillside, La Camelia is an old Tuscan farmhouse of great charm & character. It has been renovated to the standards & comforts of modern living, yet retains its original flavour with terracotta floors, chestnut beamed ceilings, & hand-painted majolica tiling throughout. The open-plan layout of the living & dining area, with its traditional open fireplace, gives a spacious feel; with double doors to a conservatory & a wisteria-covered eating area. This is a relaxed & comfortable property in harmony with its natural surroundings & particularly suitable for children. A key feature is the cascading, split-level swimming pool, 16x5m, with travertine surround, set in green lawns, the higher level being a separate shallow pool for children. There's a patio around the higher level with ample good quality pool furniture for sunbathing. The enclosed garden includes a children's area with slides & swings, a ping-pong table, table football, 2 covered outdoor eating areas, a brick barbecue & working pizza oven.

Lucca is a beautiful historic city surrounded by intact 15 century walls, around which you can walk or cycle. Famous for its medieval towers, churches, & 'Piazza Anfiteatro'; its winding paved streets offer an array of smart boutiques, gourmet shops, excellent restaurants & traditional markets. Puccini was born there & daily recitals of his music take place in the 12 century Basilica of San Giovanni. There's also an annual open air festival of his operas during July & August at Torre Del Lago, 30 mins away. The nearby towns of Montecarlo & Vinci (home of Leonardo) are lovely places for lunch, the latter with some very good restaurants & a Leonardo museum.

Not far from the house there are a number of wonderful villas & gardens built in the 16th & 17th centuries, the most famous being Villa Garzoni at Collodi, home of the creator of Pinocchio. Around Florence there are also several grand Medici villas worth seeing. The old spa towns of Montecatini & Bagni di Lucca are of interest; as are the picturesque ancient towns of the Garfagnana region such as Barga & Castelnuovo.

Further afield - day trips to Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra, Cinque Terre, Arezzo & the mountains of Carrara are well within reach.

Tennis, riding, bicycle hire & golf are all available in the area.

There are 5 challenging & beautiful golf courses within an hour's drive. Further details can be supplied.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were at La Camelia in July 2012 and are already thinking about how soon we can return.

My favourite thing about this house is the swimming pool: a huge, white marble haven with a smaller level at the top (great for the kids) which then cascades into the larger level beneath. Pure heaven.

The interior of the house is beautifully decorated; rustic and traditional with a unique modern twist. From the mosaics in the bathroom, to the balcony overlooking the pool, to the cosy conservatory off the lounge, each inch of space has been carefully considered and the result is a villa which is not a house but a home.

A home we hope to come back to very very soon!

Quiet and tranquil retreat

  • 4 of 5

The house was plenty big enough for our party of 7 adults and four children. The top highlight was the pool, which was shallow enough for an 18 month old to touch the bottom and always provided fun and relaxation. Next was the dining table under the wisteria which was the occasion for nice lunches and dinners.

Lucca was within an easy drive and we had a nice day out there, as also were some nice villas with gardens.

The ice cream parlour in San Martino in Freddana was also very popular as a short escape with a treat at the end.

The supermarket in San Martino (Simply) had everything we needed.

The house was as described and the housekeeper sorted out the Internet when we asked her to and was helpful.

A wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

La Camelia is a wonderful house in the most perfect Tuscan setting with beautiful views. It is a 5-10 minute drive from a village with good service facilities but the secluded environment of the house adds to tranqulity. We really enjoyed the big pool, the traditional well equipped kitchen and also the outside Pizza oven which we used with delicate pizzas as result. This place is a haven of calm and beauty. The owner was very service oriented. We had a wonderful time and would love to return.

Beautiful Tuscan house in a stunning setting

  • 5 of 5

The farmhouse is set in a stunning hillside setting in the Tuscan hills. It makes for an idyllic family holiday. There is a fabulous pool, kittens that our four children fell in love with, table tennis and table football as well as swings and plenty of garden to run around in. We also enjoyed sitting with sketch pads with the children and painting the horses in the field next door.

It is in the perfect location for discovering the area. It is just 15 minutes into Lucca where we cycled the ramparts and discovered a magical delicatessen where we brought perfect pasta. Florence is only an hour away. We booked tickets in advance online to show our children the amazing art.

The owner of the house was super helpful and when we asked our children what made their stay so special they said 'Erlana'. We had a very happy holiday.

Staying at Camelia was a joy! When we arrived at the villa our expectations were surpassed: a beautiful, old Tuscan farmhouse, with bags of charm, that preserves the individuality of the family who renovated it.

We fell in love with the photos, & it's all as pretty as it looks. There are individual touches all over the house & garden to discover, and a strong sense of being in a family home, not a bland rental unit. Erlana, the lovely owner gave us a warm welcome & took care of our party. We were a big group with children & the house was a perfect size for us.

What you can’t see from the photos is how beautiful the countryside is round the Camelia. We went on several walks that got longer & longer as none of us wanted to turn back. When booking holiday property I always fear a lurking factory or quarry. I needn’t have worried as the house is surrounded by miles of peaceful, idyllic countryside.

The marble swimming pool is gorgeous – the separate shallow pool for the little ones, a bonus. As are the children’s facilities - the outdoor playground with slides & swing, the table tennis kept the children occupied for hours.

The garden also has lovely lighting at night, & it was very relaxing sitting out late in the warm night air.

We asked for a cook to prepare a meal for us on the first night – a great decision as the food was delicious - so good indeed that we asked him to return.

The food was equally good in the restaurants near the house. We can particularly recommend ‘Butterfly’ restaurant at Marlia – Michelin starred.

The town of San Martino in Freddana is just down the road and was handy for amenities such as bank, groceries &, of course, gelato. The house is only 20 mins or so from the centre of Lucca , so we spent quite a bit of time there, shopping, eating, looking at the sights.

We had some great days out to Pisa & Florence . We also went to the beach at Lido di Camaiore, & took a ferry up the coast. If you have children it’s worth visiting the Pinocchio Park at Collodi: through the village of Pinocchio are dotted statues of characters from the story (mercifully un-Disney); there’s an amusement park, puppet theatre & café. Meanwhile the adults can visit the sumptuous Garzoni gardens.

In summary, we didn’t want to leave & the area contains so much to do that we couldn’t fit in, so we intend to become regular visitors to Camelia.

Set in a sunny meadow surrounded by hills and woods, 'La Camelia' is 15 mins from the centre of Lucca, within easy reach of Pisa, Florence, Siena & the sea. The picturesque town of San Martino in Freddana is a 5 minutes drive & offers local food shops, supermarket, post office, pharmacy, bank, bars & restaurants serving the best pastas imaginable. There are typical Tuscan restaurants in the immediate area around the house - 'La Corte' & 'Valentino' in the villages of Loppeglia & Fiano, 'San Graziano' in San Graziano, & 'Alpino' in St Martino are among the nearest.

Lucca is a beautiful medieval city of great charm and historical interest, with everything you could want from cultural sights to great shops & restaurants. Puccini was born there and you can listen to daily concerts of his work in a 12th century basilia.

The seaside resorts of the Versilian coast with their long sandy beaches such as Lido di Camiore, Forte Dei Marmi & Viareggio, are a 30 to 40 mins drive. Viareggio also has a port with boat trips to Lerici, Portovenere, Cinque Terre & nearby islands.

The house is an ideal base for relaxing walks & scenic drives through the beautiful countryside, where you can discover charming villages, wonderful views & interesting historic sites.
