Why Janet Hamilton chose County Down

Simply....the views are second to none! We have travelled the world and stayed in many wonderful places but the view of the mountains and the bay at Dundrum captured our heart. We plan to retire there and can't imagine ourselves ever parting with it! It has been our pleasure to share it with guests from all around the world and many return each year, sometimes twice or three times a year to enjoy it! I think it has captured their heart also!

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment is one of only three properties at The Quay which have floor to ceiling corner windows taking in both the views of the Bay and the Mountains. We may be bias but we believe we chose the best spot! It is bright and spacious and as soon as you walk in through the doors, we guarantee you will relax! It is totally calm and peaceful and it wouldn't be hard to lose track of time kicking back and enjoying the ever changing views. We take pride in how we present the apartment for our guests and the furnishings, artwork, bedlinen etc are all of good quality. Believe me, we want you to have a wonderful experience and to enjoy your stay at the apartment as much as we do!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We received these lovely comments on a "thank you" card from our recent guests "Dear Janet, We had a really lovely holiday at your wonderful apartment. It is so comfortable and convenient and we will never forget the views of the bay and mountains. There are so many nice places close to Dundrum and we enjoyed walks at Murlough and around the mountains and the weather was mainly good. Many thanks for everything. Best wishes to you and your family"

Luxurious and tranquil

  • 5 of 5

Janet is the epitome of the perfect host. She is highly organised, friendly and accessible (Janet always answers e-mails promptly, regardless of the time of day!).

The apartment is finished to a high detail; the views are breath-taking; and we appreciated the sequence of displayed artwork. It is also adjacent to several local restaurants and shops.

The main feature that we appreciated was the tranquility; and the mesmerising and changing views from the windows and balcony. Within one day you can watch the bay fill and drain, as the tide comes in and out just in front of the apartment's large window. As you lift your eyes from the bay, you are next greeted with the southerly view of the Mourne Mountains, with Slieve Donard (851m) and Slieve Commedagh dominating the skyline.

This was out first visit. We had no negative experiences at all. Our whole holiday was a relaxing pleasure.

Would we recommend it to others? ..... well need I tell you more than ..... we have just advance booked 3 further holidays here!

Perfect Haven

  • 5 of 5

This apartment exudes a tranquil ambience with every need catered for and the location was stunning. The wet weather we experienced did not dampen our stay as we enjoyed the stunning views of the ever-changing tide and the Mountains of Mourne.

Janet's customer service skills and kindness were exemplary. The hospitality tray was a lovely gesture and the cosiness of the apartment set the mood for a memorable stay. The kitchen was well-equipped and the bed was very comfortable. The housekeeping could not be faulted. The décor was delightful and Janet and Ken have put a lot of thought into providing a beautiful apartment for the enjoyment of visitors.

We dined at the Buck's Head and The Maghera Inn and were not disappointed. At this time of year the village is peacefully quiet and perfectly ideal for anyone wanting a break away from the madding crowd! We enjoyed it so much and have rebooked.

Thank you Janet and Ken.

This spacious, luxury 3 bedroom apartment offers stunning, uninterrupted mountain and bay views. This is a superb spot for bird-watching and seal-spotting. There is a beach right at your doorstep and you are a short walk to the nature reserve of Murlough Bay and the ruins of Dundrum castle which offers superb views and is great for picnics. The nearby village contains a supermarket, antique shops, beauty salons and some renowned restaurants. You're in Ireland so there are plenty of pubs within walking distance! A short drive away will take you to the town of Newcastle at the foot of the Mournes and Castlewellan where you have access to any number of outdoor activities, golf, fishing, mountain climbing, canoeing, abseiling, sailing, mountain biking, tennis etc. Newcastle has a heated outdoor swimming pool during the summer months. You are a 30 minute drive to Strangford Lough, 40 minutes to Belfast ,1.5 hrs to the stunning Antrim Coast and Giants Causeway and 2 hours to Dublin.

Golf: Royal County Down is one of the oldest and most renowned Golf Clubs in Ireland with traditions dating back for more than one hundred years. In 2007 the Walker Cup matches were held here. Situated in Newcastle, where in the immortal words of Percy French, 'The Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea', Royal County Down is not only a fine test of golf but has accompanying scenery that is spellbinding. Alongside the Championship Links, Royal County Down has a second course, The Annesley Links. Laid out beneath the same massive, almost menacing backdrop, the Annesley Links is nowhere near as intimidating or as formidable a challenge as the Championship Links, but then it was never intended to be. It is a course for everyone. (Extracts from the official Royal County Down Golf Course website). For further details tel: (028) 4372 3314
