Why Gregory Johnson chose Lakeside
We purchased this property because we have enjoyed the Lakeside-Marblehead and Port Clinton areas for daytrips and weekends for many years. When purchased, the property and foundation, roof, and walls, but nothing else: all plumbing and electricity are new, as is the interior. Designed to be pleasant both for families interested in fishing, boating, and attending sites in the area (like Cedar Point) and for groups of fishing friends, we are happy to share this home with you.
What makes this Cottage unique
"A fisherman's cottage is his castle" and a vacation with family should be a time of imaginative fun--that's why we named it "Chateau on the Lake." This little hideaway cottage is cozy, comfy, and easy to be in.

It did what it needed to do.
My overall summary is that this isn't a "sterile" luxurious cottage stay, but it is very adequate and very affordable compared to other options.
To start, I rented because I needed a place to stay for a 1 month job with the ODNR and I was traveling with my 30 lb dog.
All the other comments pretty much prepare you for this property. It is by no means the most luxurious place you will ever stay. That being said I always had hot water and could cool/heat the cabin to the right temp and could prepare my own meals and never had electricity or internet issues and had a roof over my head, privacy, and autonomy: things that I would not have necessarily had at an equivalently-priced long-stay hotel. I was able to have my dog with me, with no fear of a cleaning lady coming in and distressing her in her crate during the day.
I took off a star because it was definitely man-clean. It wasn't dirty but it also wasn't spotless. I would also be wary/aware of renting during warmer weather as I had some issues with carpenter ants in the trash. But, I knew after 3 minutes in the cottage that this could be an issue (the cottage doesn't have a "tight" seal, cracks between door and frame and "leaky" windows) and wasn't super surprised, so I just modified my trash/waste management/dog food situation and then didn't have many more problems (But it was super cold for April, so that might have also been what caused part of the declines.)
The neighborhood was fine, the neighbors were friendly and positively-interacted with me when I walked the dog, and there was a 10-minute walk to the Mazurik public access where we could reach the lake and not be in a private marina. There was one "creepy old man" on the road just fyi for any other single-women renters, but he seemed relatively harmless. I did alter our walks to avoid him though.
Oh, and if you really like cooking/baking the stove/pots and pans situation isn't awesome, but a trip to walmart and a skillet and baking sheet later and everything was okay. the oven was never really up for baking though... I could bake some vegetables/ meats though with little issue.
And I do have to say, all of your basics: towels, soaps, paper products, cleaning products, toiletries were taken care of and that was a nice touch and affected my 4 star review.
Thanks for the heads up on few things we can fix up a bit and improve on. You and your dog were great guests, and we hope you're in the neighborhood again. Happy summer!
Convenient for fishing
Close to everything in Marblehead, close to the lake.
Chateu on the Lake
We were up at Lake Erie for a fishing tournament and stayed at this house. It was clean enough but it is ridiculous to state in the ad that it accommodates 7 people. We only had 4 and it was very tight quarters. Extremely small bathroom as well and could not move around easily. Would not recommend.
The property was clean
We had a very nice time, the little house was clean and organized. Supplied with all toiletries, towels and kitchen wear. I would recommend this place to anyone traveling for fishing or a get-a-away. It was perfect for my husband and myself. The only thing I wound change is the bed..but you can't have everything perfect. Love it.
Would not recommend!
We decided not to stay mainly because of the neighborhood which the owner admitted it wasn't the best. Did not feel safe for our boat and vehicle during the night hours. The road to the cottage was full of deep ruts and holes. When we arrived there was no electricity due to storm. We called the owners and they said they would reimburse us for that night which we never received and they would repost the days we were suppose to stay so they could give us most of our money back. It wasn't reposted! The ad said it could sleep 7 which would be ridiculous. 1 full bed, 2 cots and a futon. No room to move around if you put all beds out. Very tiny! There were notes all over the place saying "this doesn't work but working on it". Would not recommend!!!
We have a great neighborhood! What we actually said was that it isn't a tourist neighborhood, but instead a mix of year-round and seasonal cabins, so it doesn't feel like you are surrounded by other tourists. Marblehead has the lowest crime rate of anywhere in the U.S., and our street is no exception: people can "feel unsafe" for many reasons, and none of us can control how another feels.
Mr. Guest remarked to us on the phone that if he had been at our cottage with fishing buddies, it probably would have been okay, but that Mrs. Guest was not going to be happy there. The Guests decided to leave, even though the power, which was briefly knocked out to 19,000 homes due to a Lake Erie storm, was back on within 3 hours of their arrival, thanks to the crews of Ohio Edison. We did try to open the remaining nights on the VRBO website, but unfortunately, the software is not flexible to do that, nor does it allow partial refunds via credit card (instead we have sent a money order for the one night refund). We did post availability via other social media, but unfortunately, most people can't suddenly decide to take Monday-Friday off and go to the lake, and we had no takers. We told Mr. Guest that we would be happy to host him and some fishing buddies free of charge for three nights if he would like to come back; we hope he will accept this hospitality.
An observation: booking on VRBO is always an adventure, which is why many people enjoy it. There is an element of the unknown. However, everything above that Mr. Guest complained about could be known with careful reading of our listing: the house is small (as pictured and as described with dimensions); we allow up to seven and provide cots in order to allow guests to decide if togetherness for a time at one of the most popular places on earth, and at a price they can afford, is more important than luxury. Guests who require a level of luxury are advised to consider properties at the top of the price list rather than at our price, which is much more humble, especially if booking for a partner/spouse who might have specific expectations.
Again, we are saddened by your disappointment, we have mailed the refund check, we are trying to work with VRBO to be more nimble, and we welcome all guests who want homey instead of luxury.
Small well stocked cottage
I was happy my dog was welcome at this well stocked cottage. They seemed to have everything you need but didn't bring with you like salt, pepper, spices, band-aids, etc. It was small but comfortable and quiet. I enjoyed my stay.
a home away from home
The cottage is in a neighborhood of Marblehead that is approximately half year-round residents and half summer cottages. The walk or drive to the lake is @ 1/2 mile, through this neighborhood. The location gives a feel of being at home: it does not feel at all like being in the middle of a slick resort. Some people love this; some people would rather be surrounded by other tourists. If you and your friends and family love feeling at home, this cottage might be the perfect place for you.
