Charming, beautiful rural escape

  • 5 of 5

Where to begin!

We had a fantastic stay at Fair Oak Farm earlier this summer. We had booked the farmhouse for a weekend for my sister's hen do (dinner & cocktails, not L plates). In total there were ten of us, which is just the right number for accommodation in the house and for everyone to have their own bed, which was important for us. It was also a perfect fit round the large kitchen table!

Ian was very helpful in the run up and during our stay, even popping by the house to try and locate a few bits for us during our visit. Everyone arrived in different stages on the Friday but each to the exclamation that the house was 'such a find'.

The property is quite coyly advertised, and doesn't do justice to the large garden complete with zip wire and trampoline, and peacocks, which really gave it the 'wow' factor! (Bear in mind if you have any bird phobic guests that the peacocks really do strut about and get all up in your business, but are absolutely stunning!)

The property was beautifully furnished, with lovely farmhouse touches (a rocking horse, large family style wooden dining table). The bedding was all very clean and fresh, which is a real bonus.

The farmhouse is situated next to the Farm's other properties (the Shepherd's Huts etc) so you will see other people around, but we didn't find this a problem as the Farmhouse garden was huge and exclusively for us, so we very much felt we had our own space.

There's two sitting rooms in the house, which are both very snug and complete with an open fireplace. If you wanted a property where a large party could all fit in one sitting room, you'll find that a bit of a squeeze but as it was summer time we didn't find this a problem as we spent most our time at the table outside (where there is a very small bbq but it does the job, and a free-standing fire pit). In the winter, a smaller party would really enjoy the cozy sitting rooms and gathering round the kitchen aga (though there is an electric oven too if you're not used to cooking on an aga, luckily we were).

All in all - a great stay! Thanks so much, it made for an unforgettable weekend for my sister.

The surrounding countryside is superb with small hilltop villages and rolling meadows, great for horse riding, walking and cycling. There are many stunning bridle paths, public footpaths and cycle routes nearby. Our OS map reference is TQ 622 262. The popular Cuckoo Trail and Bewl Water are not far from the farm. His and hers mountain bikes are available for hire. Within a mile from the farm you will also find a superb trout fishery, set up by Roger Daltry over 25 years ago. Also close by are plenty of golf courses and fishing locations. Nearby Bewl Water offers sailing, canoeing, climbing, power boating and lots more for all the family. Other nearby activities or places to visit include ballooning, paragliding, rock climbing, paint ball, motor sports, dry ski slopes, motor sports, heritage gardens, enchanted forests, steam trains and the ''best small zoo in the UK', Drusillas Park. The farm is only 2.5 miles from Mayfield, a large village with beautiful high street & shops.

Other Activities: Archery, falconry, fishing, wine tasting, rock climbing, water sports at Bewl Water, Go Ape at Bedgebury
