Owners Katherine and Joe Colwell live and work here at Colwell Cedars Retreat. Katherine is a professional artist and art educator, Joe is retired from a career with the US Forest Service and fulfilling his dream of writing and publishing his essays and fiction. Both Katherine and Joe are certified science and nature facilitators, and with pre-arrangement and fees, you can schedule an art class, a Nature and Art Journey, or visit and purchase art in the retreat gallery. When you call or email they may be out hiking one of the trails, tending their organic veggie garden, bird watching, or sitting on a lichen-covered boulder enjoying the fresh air and views. So please leave a message and be patient for an hour or two til they respond to your inquiry.
Katherine purchased this Cottage in 1990
Why Katherine chose Hotchkiss
We chose this location since it combines a variety of experiences. It is remote, with no close neighbors, yet it is within a few miles of towns and services. It has views of the surrounding valley and mountains. It is within an hour's drive of scenic wonders such as Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Grand Mesa, the West Elk Wilderness, two BLM National Conservation areas, vineyards and wineries, organic farms, great fishing and hunting---the list goes on. We have four miles of trails that traverse our 40 acres of juniper forest, streamsides with spring-fed hills above, sagebrush flats. The night skies are crystal clear and sunrises and sunsets awe-inspiring almost every day.
What makes this Cottage unique
Viola-Rose Guesthouse is simple yet comfortable. The views out the windows are of the West Elk Mountains and beyond. The view out the front door continues the panorama. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful. We are close to amenities such as bicycling, hunting, fishing, skiing, river floating, visiting art galleries, organic farms, wineries, sandstone canyons, high mountain peaks. You can walk a trail outside your door and become one with the forests and the stream, including deer, owls, eagles, chipmunks. You get good cell phone reception as well as internet service, but you will want to spend time outside enjoying the fresh Colorado mountain air.

Pleasant quiet rural property
Had a peaceful stay and hosts are very nice people. Beautiful property and great trails for hiking on property.
A Rare and Special Place
Joe and Katherine were so welcoming when I arrived. They shared information about the area, the history, and the do's and don'ts about building, as I have purchased a property down the road and intend to build soon. Joe took me on a hike on their property.. He is a true naturalist, pointing out every plant, telling me the names and all the history of the area..
Katherine a wonderful artist, showed me her work and studio. I read one of Joe's books while I was there. Yes he is a great writer as well..
Loved the sunrises, stars and sunsets..
A truly rare and wonderful experience. I will stay again probably many times until my home is built!
Thank you Denise for your five star review and kind words. So glad to know that we were able to be of assistance as you began your acquaintence with the neighborhood and the North Fork Valley community. Our own work in writing and art, along with the improvements and accessibility on our forty acres, has always been inspired by the plants and animals, and birds and bees, and the sunrises, stars and sunsets. We know your work will be too, and we look forward to guiding you throughout the seasons if you need us on your journey to Redlands Mesa.
A Perfect Retreat
The Colwell's property is off the beaten path on a beautiful property on Redland Mesa. They are wonderful and generous hosts, full of interesting stories and information about the area. They took us on a hike to a local archeological site that was fascinating. The cottage is simply furnished, spotless, and private. The stars were unbelievable. We had everything we needed for a few days of down time along with access to great hiking trails , restaurants and wineries. We will be going back.
Margaret, thank you for your thoughtful positive review. Our aim has always been to share the wonderful places and activities that are in our area, complementing our private nature and art retreat. We look forward to sharing with you again in the future.
A magical place.
We spent 3 wonderful days at this lovely piece of land, soaking in the surroundings, and enjoying a slower pace. The property owners were gracious and helpful, and we even were given a guided tour of the trails on the land. Beautiful. The Colwells are wonderful hosts (the venue was very clean), interesting people (artist and author), and dedicated land stewards. If you appreciate nature and its timeless beauty, I recommend this whole-heartedly.
We enjoyed sharing our land and space with you both. Thank you for your kind words, and for sharing recipes ---- I didn't know I really can make a GF pie. And, thank you for sharing your music ---- it truly does feel like a symphony.
Visiting the Grand Valley Region from Woodland Park Colorado
My wife and I visited Colwell Cedars during a very warm spell in late June 2017. The early mornings to mid-mornings were very pleasant and made for good biking weather. I enjoyed several rides on nearby paved roads that were nearly deserted and provided a good morning ride. The late evenings were also pleasant. During the heat of the day (90+F), the A/C in the rental operated efficiently and kept us cool.
The space of the rental worked very well for us as a couple and should also be fine for a small family. The location was well positioned to other destinations in the Grand Valley region such as Montrose, Palisades, Paonia, Grand Mesa and the north side of Black Canyon. All are within an hour or so away. We enjoyed the drive from the rental to Cedaredge going the back way and saving 10 or so minutes when going to Grand Mesa.
The rental is well maintained and very clean. The bathroom and shower worked well for us. The kitchen was adequate for the meals we did and we made a few suggestions to improve on this. Katherine and Joe were extremely helpful and friendly and made our stay quiet enjoyable.
For places to eat we specially enjoyed the Cedaredge Creekside Café for breakfast and the Colorado Boy Brewery in Montrose for lunch/dinner. The brewery pubs of Colorado Boy-Montrose, Horsefly-Montrose and the Palisades brewery are favorites and where all serve very good food. We also enjoyed our lunch at the Slice O Life Bakery in Palisades. We highly recommend wine tasting in both Palisades and the Paonia area. Stoney Mesa in Cedaredge was the favorite winery for us during this visit to the area.
It was a pleasure having you and your wife and pup as our guests while you explored the Western Slope. Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review. We've implemented your kitchen suggestions (so simple and easy!), and appreciate you sharing your restaurant and winery favorites in the North Fork, Surface Creek, and beyond.
We loved staying in Hotchkiss it was beautiful and has lots of fun! Joe and Katherine were very welcoming and friendly!
