This information is for first-timers and US/Canadian travelers
This was the first time I have rented an apartment with HomeAway that was not in the US. So I am writing this review for those like me. (I usually stay in hotels in Europe.)
First, I would recommend this apartment because it was convenient, met our needs and the price was good. I slept really well except when there was really loud banging outside (like maybe a drunk person couldn't get in the door?). My friend and I were able to walk many places. So I recommend it for a small family or for friends. It is very small, but if you are going to be a tourist, you do not need space.
However, there were some issues you should be aware of. First, the communication with the owners was not always good. Sometimes there was a great delay in response. This made me nervous about not being able to communicate on arrival. The owner designated a different person to let me in which fortunately worked out fine. However, when I called and emailed for help during the stay, I received no response from him. In addition, there were no instructions in the apartment for anything in English. We understood enough Spanish to figure out most of it. They seemed to be minimal anyway. Further, the key to the outside door is a bit tricky. You must not insert it all the way in, pull it back just a fraction of an inch. It took us quite a few tries to get in at first. Also, if you are not familiar with European window shades, you pull the latch at the bottom out and down with the strap which causes the shade to descend.
The kitchen faucet is not at all connected to the sink. We reported this to the owner, so hopefully it will be repaired. There is no automatic coffee maker if that matters to you.
I could not tell you about the a/c or heat since we did not need either. We could not figure out the dishwasher. The shower/bathroom is very steamy because there is no ventilation. Sorry to list so many negatives despite my recommendation, but I feel it is better to be informed. Finally, I sent a message about the deposit about a week after our stay, and they refunded it at that time. It took another four days to show up on my credit card.
A quiet space in a busy city...
The four days spent in this Madrid apartment were very enjoyable. One of the great surprises of the apartment is how quiet it really is....in the midst of a busy city! Great for sleeping! Eloisa left a bowl of oranges for us...the juiciest ones I have ever tasted. The apartment is very conveniently located in the city. Having the Atocha train station near by made trips to Toledo, Avila, and El Escorial easy! Also many of the Madrid historical sites are in walking distance from the apartment. Restaurants and grocery stores are nearby. Eloisa's enthusiasm for this lovely space in a busy Madrid and this eclectic neighborhood is evident!
Christmas in Madrid
We recently stayed at this apartment. We were a family of five and never felt crowded. The rooms were a decent size. The wifi work perfecly. Eloisa was great. Always got back to me promptly. The location was great. Highly recommend it.
Perfect Place - Even Better Manager !
Eloisa was very attentive to our questions via e-mail and text before arriving and even went to the Metro Station to pick us Up !!
The apartment was absolutely immaculate, Mercedes took great care and love making sure that everything was clean and spotless. We felt right at home with the warmth of Eloisa and the tips and knowledge she shared with us helped a lot enjoying Madrid.
The apartment is quiet and relaxing, close to Metro and Big Red Bus Stops.
Fully stocked supermarket a couple of blocks away.
Hope to come back soon and will recommend this place to everyone traveling to Madrid
Comfortable - Reasonable - Great Location!
This apartment was a great start to our three week vacation travelling Europe. Marieke was terrific, she patiently waited for our late arrival at the airport, then delivered us to the apartment; her pick up price was a value and hospitality unbeatable. Thank you again Marieke! Well stocked home and great location, we walked everywhere. The bus and metro were easily accessible, just a 10 minute walk up the street and over a block. No frills to the apartment but very comfortable, very reasonable and the location we were thrilled with. We definitely would stay there again.
Nice place with good value.
This was a great place to stay for our three weeks in Madrid. It is so close to everything that you can walk in 30 minutes or less (we bought 10-trip Metro tickets and left with a couple of trips still available). No glamour here, not in the apartment or the neighborhood, but very comfortable, very nice, and very reasonably priced. There are two larger grocery stores close by and several neighborhood shops even closer. Several bars and great restaurants are only 5 minutes from the flat. The main train station is a 10-minute walk from the house and it is right in between two Metro stations on different lines. While taking the Express Bus to the airport on departure is smart (only 5 euros) have Marieke and Darío pick you up when you arrive. It is money well spent as the apartment is a little hard to find if you're not familiar with Madrid. It's a nice, comfortable apartment in a great place. We'll stay there again when we return.
