About Jim Skarin
My wife of 38 years and I enjoy working together. We poured our hearts into building this home. Our five children and eleven grandchildren have all added insight into making this vacation home extra special. We all enjoy extending hospitality to others and know that you will build many happy memories at our Pleasant View Cottage.
Jim Skarin purchased this House in 2016
Why Jim Skarin chose Mt. Pleasant
Our family selected this property because of the quaint setting and beautiful beach. The mid-century beach neighborhood is comprised of single family homes and is in a very quiet wooded setting. We prized the serene location that was just minutes from the amenities of South Haven's bustling downtown.
What makes this House unique
Besides the sandy beach and stunning sunsets over Lake Michigan, this home exudes charm from the moment you drive up to it. The private back yard with its two decks and bluestone patio invites you to sit and relax with a glass of iced tea while reading a book or chatting with friends and family. The quiet setting provides the perfect backdrop for a relaxing getaway with family and friends.

This is by far the best property I've ever rented from Homeaway! It was a perfect fit our family.
Our family had a glorious vacation at this property in South Haven. The Skarin's have designed the finest property I have ever rented. Having a bathroom for every bedroom sold me on the place. Every room and patio has a stunning view of the lake. We loved the private access and beach where we spent memorable hours. I cannot say enough good things about this property or how accessible the owners were to us. I would definitely return. The house made the trip a success!
We are happy to hear that you built wonderful memories with your family at our home and private beach. It was a delight to share Pleasant View with you, and we look forward to having you as guests again.
We have just returned from our week at Pleasant View Cottage and our family all agreed it was the best spot we have stayed over the past years. The generous room sizes, the lovely and peaceful decorating, the outside patio, s'mores around the fire pit all the while viewing Lake Michigan made this a very memorable vacation for us.
Thanks Linda and Jim
The home was very nice and beautiful, but not the location or beachfront we expected
The owners were easy to work with. The home was very nice. Newer, very clean, great view, private beach. It was in a random neighborhood which was surprising so the atmosphere wasn’t great but if you just want a nice home to be at, then it’s perfect. The pictures are a little misleading as there are about 150 stairs straight up and down to get to the beach. So if you can’t climb stairs this is not the place for you. Bring shampoo and all that stuff as there is nothing but a tiny bar of soap.
We had some nice evening fires and they welcomed us with a s’mores kit which was great for the kids. The park isn’t useable and our kids got yelled at by a neighbor so definitely don’t use it. That was a shame for them. Drive to town or hike down to the beach. It’s really rocky so bring water shoes. But they have chairs and sand toys. The ping pong is a nice addition. The patio and deck are good for relaxing and sunsets. Although they are missing umbrella stands so it was hard to keep the sun out during the day.
It’s a very nice place off the beaten path of the true South Haven town and that was disappointing but if you don’t mind that and you like climbing stairs, you’ll love this place. The owners are delightful.
Pleasant View - Peaceful Setting, Gorgeous Views, Private Beach
We love sharing our home with others and named it Pleasant View because of the peaceful, quiet setting and gorgeous views of Lake Michigan from almost every room in the house. We specifically chose this neighborhood because of its quaint charm and lovely setting. There are absolutely no neighbors on the adjacent lot to the north, and the neighbors to the south have not built access to the beach giving lots of privacy.
While we do have many stairs to the beach, our 96 year old mother and our 12 grandchildren ages 2 - 12 have no difficulty navigating the low rise stairs. In addition, there are built in decks with benches and landings every 12 feet of descent for resting or viewing the waves dancing on the lake.
We provide bath towels and full size bars of soap in each bathroom for use in the house. However, we have found it best for guests to bring the shampoos best suited for their individual hair types.
There is a wonderful park in South Haven called Kid's Corner as noted in our welcome letter by the S'Mores kit in our house. We are not part of the subdivision with the privately owned park in which our guests played, and we make note of that in our welcome letter.
The beach is very nice and is constantly changing with storms and weather patterns. At times, there are rocks at the water's edge and other times there are not. The week these guests stayed there was a 10' - 12' band of rounded rocks along the water line with an enormous sandbar on the other side which provided an ample sandy play area in shallow water. The sandy beach is currently over 100' wide and is perfect for relaxing in the provided beach chairs or building sandcastles with the beach toys stored on the deck.
We love our quiet location. It's the perfect getaway spot located only about 4 miles north of downtown South Haven making the town easily and quickly accessible. Yet, after enjoying all the shops and restaurants, you can escape the crowds of town and come back to a peaceful retreat at a beautiful custom home while enjoying captivating views of Lake Michigan with your family. We always look forward to practicing hospitality and sharing our lovely home with others. We delight in helping them build many wonderful memories.
High end and equally cozy
My family--6 adults and 3 children--stayed at this property last week. The house is absolutely stunning and the layout is perfect; we have rented homes in the past that either don't use their space well or have "issues"--this house is perfect for our 3 groups and because the house is so well designed, it made for great space use. Having a bathroom with each bedroom was invaluable, and the bunk room was great for the kiddos. The house gets great light, so I would definitely recommend a sleeping mask as there are not room darkening shades. Once we adjusted to rising early, we were glad to have extra time to enjoy the lovely home and the great beach--we did bring beach toys but they were a waste as as the owners thought of everything. We look forward to the chance to stay here again!
Thanks for your enthusiasm about Pleasant View. We love our home and beach, too, and we enjoyed sharing it with guests as nice as you. We're so glad you had a wonderful week at our home, and we look forward to sharing it with your family again.
Beautiful, relaxing vacation
My sister and I met up with some old friends and their sisters for a 3 night get away. This home was perfect for our group. The house was spacious with plenty of bathrooms. The patio and fire pit provided an inviting area for great conversation and beautiful views. Every morning we went to the beach for a relaxing walk and enjoyed the beach again in the afternoon. South Haven was just a short ride away where we shopped, dined and enjoyed live music. The owners were very responsive to any questions that we had and were great to work with both via email and by phone. I highly recommend this property for families, friends or couples.
We had a group of girls spend the weekend at Jim and Linda's beautiful home. The weather was not the greatest during our stay but we still had a wonderful time. There is plenty to do in South Haven and surrounding towns. However, the home is so beautiful and cozy that we were perfectly content spending time inside hanging out when it was rainy.
Minutes north of charming downtown South Haven.
