About Julia Duffy
We're Julia and Mike, and Seafarer Cottage is our holiday home. Our permanent home is on the Isle of Man, where Mike lectures in Engineering and I'm the Head of Languages at a large comprehensive school, but my heart is always in Northumberland.
Julia Duffy purchased this House in 2017
Why Julia Duffy chose Berwick-upon-Tweed
We bought the cottage in 2017, following the death of my parents, who lived on Holy Island. I had a wonderful childhood there, and Mike loves it just as much, so when a cottage this good came on the market so close to the Island, we leapt at the chance to buy it.
What makes this House unique
The lovely warm stonework made us fall in love with the cottage straight away, and the light and airy feel inside was a bonus. It was so important to us to buy a cottage that we , and our guests, really enjoy staying in, and the proximity to Holy Island was the icing on the cake. Seafarer affords the opportunity to enjoy the magic of the island, with the convenience of not being bound by the tide when you want to go elsewhere. And why wouldn't you? Just a few minutes drive away there are ruined castles, a stone circle, a steam train, a waterwheel, artists' studios and fabulous beaches.

Had a lovely week staying at this wonderful cottage. Fully equipped with everything for a family stay and ideally located to get everywhere. Would definitely recommend it and would love to return one day.
We had a wonderful week . The cottage is well equipped and comfortable. Easy to find with good views of the coast. Would definitely stay again if we're up in Northumberland. Would recommend Bamburgh beach/castle and Alnwick castle/gardens.
Cottage is ideally located for exploring Northumberland. Clean and had everything you could want. Would recommend.
A group of 4 adults stayed at this property for a week.
It was very clean, well situated for trips in and around Northumberland.
We really enjoyed our stay, one little addition that would be a good idea, would be a BBQ for the summer months
Thank so much for your lovely review; we're delighted you had a great holiday.
Holy Island is right on our doorstep. Full of charm, with its dramatic castle, beautiful church, ruined priory and spectacular beaches, this little island has been a very special place for me since my childhood days. There's really nowhere like it, once the tide is in and you're free to roam about all day.
Berwick-upon-Tweed, a lovely little town, has magnificent Elizabethan town walls and some fabulous bridges. Heading south there's the spectacular Bamburgh Castle and the picturesque little village itself. Just a bit further on, you have Alnwick Castle (setting for the first Harry Potter film) and the fabulous gardens. Alnwick is the home to one of the country's largest secondhand book stores, Barter Books, situated at the old railway station, and home to the original Keep Calm and Carry On poster.
Within an hour's drive you can head south to Newcastle or north to Edinburgh; or get the bus - they stop just a couple of minutes from the cottage. Soak up the atmosphere of two of our most charming and vibrant cities, enjoy the sites, then head home for a cosy night in - or a drink or two and a nice meal at the Lindisfarne Inn.
We're not just ideally situated for culture vultures - there's plenty for the more adventurous to do. Fishing, mountain-biking, diving, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking - they're all on our door step. And don't forget to head down to the shore if conditions are right - the Northern Lights seen from the causeway are spectacular!
