About Sacha Maxwell
I have a degree in geology and have worked in the past overseas; I was made redundant from my last position in Jan 2015 at which point I became self-employed. I am now a practicing Holistic therapist helping my clients to heal themselves, release stress and improve their quality of life.
Sacha Maxwell purchased this Barn in 1999
Why Sacha Maxwell chose Ballypatrick
The opportunity to give yourself the time and space to relax and unwind and enjoy the Suir valley. Slievenamon has a magical affect on people who visit the area, she exudes a calmness that seems to gently creep over you, the colours changing on her slopes throughout the day - magical like the stories that surround her.
What makes this Barn unique

Just what we were looking for
We wanted a comfy, warm place to stay for two nights over Christmas. And this is what we got. Plus a whole lot more. The cottage is set in beautiful countryside surroundings, and although it's in the courtyard of the host's house, it was beautifully private.
Sacha kindly left a range of grat foods for breakfasts, including soda bread and eggs. The cottage itself is delightfully quirky, being a conversion from former stables (I think). The bed(s) were really comfortable (twin beds joined together). And in the huge bathroom the shower/wet room was fabulous.
Sacha and her husband could not have been kinder and more welcoming. We'll happy book in with her again in the future, if the space is available.
Hugely recommended. Thanks to Sacha and John.
It was lovely to have guests in the cottage for Christmas this year.
Wonderful little cottage
This property is located 20-30 minutes outside of Kilkenny and close to the lovely village of Kilsheelan, and a short drive from Clonmel. Perfectly situated to visit Kilkenny and Waterford. The house is an old farmhouse renovated with modern touches, it was perfect for what we needed. Beautiful bathroom, a small kitchen area for quick meals, and one of the best beds we have ever slept on! It was wonderful.
Sacha is a perfect host, she welcomed us and checked in to give recommendations and make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. I would happily stay here on future trips and highly recommend it.
We had a lovely time at the cottage and can’t wait to return. The location couldn’t be better for us and we appreciated the gracious and thoughtful amenities. our dogs had a great time playing in the enclosed court yard.
Look forward to seeing you again in due course :-)
Quite get away
First time in the area and it did not disappoint.
Good place to stay to explore south east Ireland. Sacha was very welcoming and nothing seemed to much trouble.
Wonderful guests, a delight to have to stay. The cottage was left spotless. Excellent communication from the start. I would be quite happy to have Hazel and Martin back to stay in the future :-)
Free standing single storey stone building set near the owners 2 storey house Car necessary and suits 2 people only. Grit , breakfast cereal and delicious home baked seed loaf and butter provided by owner but otherwise provide own food. No microwave but no problem as all other cooking facilities are great. Has combined washing machine/ drier Bed very comfortable with excellent sheets and towels Only problem is WiFi is a bit iffy and to work probably needs one to access nearer to the owners house rather than in the cottage (as the owner told us when we arrived)
Owner was very welcoming and available to talk to if needed. As Storm Ali was threatening our next destination the owner offered that we could stay the next day for free if we felt uncomfortable in driving on. We really appreciated her concern and as this was our first home stay in Ireland, it created a very good benchmark.
We would certainly be happy to recommend Clonmel to our friends.
Thank you for being such wonderful guests, hope that all is well back at home. :-)
One of the best VRBOs at which we've stayed
After renting VRBOs in Canada, England, France, Italy, Scotland, Switzerland, USA and now Ireland, we can say that the Garden Grove Cottage in Clonmel, Ireland was really one of the best VRBOs at which we've stayed. Owners Sacha and John were consummate hosts, the apartment was immaculate, beautifully appointed, everything was exactly as described, and we arrived to coffee, eggs, bread, and milk already laid on for us. I suppose the TV worked - we never turned it on. Lots of books in the Cottage, including fun antiquarian books. When was the last time YOU read Gray's Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard in a fun 19th century binding? "...far from the madding crowd..." And how apropos given that mere minutes from the house were 10th century intact (!) Celtic crosses we visited in a country graveyard. Their dogs, Humboldt and Artemis, could not have been more friendly. The house is on a quiet country road, and we were lulled to sleep nightly by the quiet bleating of sheep the next field over. It was great getting to know Sacha and John who have led far more interesting lives than anyone else we've ever met, and hearing about their travels and exploits was a real eye opener. They are a wealth of information and pointed us in the direction of sights unknown to the tourist maps. Leaving this wonderful VRBO was quite difficult - it felt like we were leaving family. And this, after having been there for only four days. We should have stayed a week. Go here. You won't regret it. David and Kathy
Having guests is a wonderful experience and finding interesting quirky items to leave in the cottage to make the stay more memorable and enjoyable is fun.
The property is located overlooking the Suir Valley on the slopes of Slievenamon. The historic cities of Kilkenny and Waterford are a 30min drive, and the medieval walled town of Fethard is a 15min drive. Ireland's only Tudor Manor House is in Carrick on Suir a 10min drive.
If you are into walking and hiking there is a wonderful range of walks for different levels of fitness, from a steep hike up Slievenamon itself, to a gentle river walk along the river Suir. The Commeraghs and Knockmealdown mountains are 30min drive, the Galtee mountains a 40min drive.
Also within a 30min drive is the Waterford Greenway and 40min to the UNESCO Heritage Site - the Copper Coast.
The property is in the heart of the horse country of Ireland, close to the world famous Coolmore Stud and Ballydoyle. There are five racecourses within an hour's drive: Gowran Park, Tramore, Clonmel. Tipperary and Thurles with both Limerick and Cork just over an hour's drive. The Curragh, Naas and Punchestown are about 1hr30min.
There is excellent fishing for trout and salmon on the river Suir (permit required) as well as on other rivers locally.
Clonmel has a thriving arts scene, The Junction Festival and the Busking Festival. Kilkenny has the Cat's Laughs comedy festival and Kilkenny Arts week.
There are also other rural pursuits such as birdwatching, falconry to name but a few.
