About Jennifer Hagglof
We are Derek, a chef, Jen an event planner and Kjell, a ten-year old avid waterman who enjoys surfing, boogie boarding, wake boarding and skim boarding. We live on the Sand Rock Farm property in a cottage adjacent to the main house and love all the work this property requires. Prior to moving to Aptos in 2014, we lived in Tahoe City for 20 years, where we owned D'lish Catering Company and the Burrito Window. We spent several winters living on the island of Kauai where Derek built homes and Jen continued to work in the special event business. Here in Aptos we take advantage of the amazing beaches and biking/hiking trails in Nisene Marks State Park for off-site recreation, however, we truly love care-taking this amazing property and spend more time here working in the gardens or working to improve the lodging and event areas.

Why Jennifer Hagglof chose Aptos Hills-Larkin Valley
Why Sand Rock Farm? This property exceeds our dreams for work and play! Each day as we make the 50 yard commute to the Inn beneath the giant redwood and oak tree, along the fern, foliage and fountain-lined fence, we feel immense gratitude for the opportunity to work here and share this amazing property with lodging guests, wedding guests, friends and family. Over the years, great care has been taken to restore the main house and to fill the gardens with roses, dogwoods, ferns, wisteria, magnolia, herbs, fountains and other unique features. It is a sanctuary for lizards and hummingbirds, banana slugs, quail, deer, cats, dogs, chickens and many other creatures drawn to the lush landscaping and shade of the old-growth canopy of redwood, oaks, acacia and more. Every window on the property offers views of trees and gardens. The "nature trail" that winds through the back of the property feels miles away. It is our privilege to work to maintain and improve the grounds and we want others to be able to enjoy it as much as we do. A multitude of attractions are located within a short distance of Sand Rock Farm including San Francisco, Davenport, Wilder Ranch, UC Santa Cruz, the Boardwalk, Capitola, Moss Landing, Monterey, Carmel, Big Basin, Big Sur and endless beaches and hiking trails in the redwoods.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Sand Rock Farm is the quintessential family farm house filled with antiques, a wood-burning fireplace, a large country kitchen and warm, welcoming bedrooms with comfortable beds. Being here feels like stepping back in time or visiting Grandma's house in the country - it is a truly unique and authentic experience. The peaceful evenings are a great time to sit by the fire in winter or gather on the deck during warm, summer days to relax or barbecue. All bedrooms are tastefully decorated and stocked with all-natural amenities, quality beds, linens and towels. Intimate events for up to 24 guests in one of the historic venues such as the Barrel Room, the Wine Terrace or the Redwood Grove, on the property are optional. Fabulous family vacation
Sand Rock Farm was the perfect setting for our multi-generational family vacation and gave us all the rare opportunity to experience a true time capsule with modern amenities. We loved that every room was en suite and how stunning and spacious the grounds were- perfect to tire the 5 kiddos out everyday and take some family pictures to treasure forever. The location of the farm was very convenient - just a short drive to amazing bbq, one of the best bakeries we’ve ever experienced, and to the beach- a must have for us land locked people! Jennifer and Derek have appointed this retreat with such care and attention to detail you will be sad to go home!
A great old farmhouse experience
Our daughter found it and we decided to have our annual family get together here. It was a great property for a large family and the house and grounds were charming. Jen and Derek were friendly and helpful. They made it feel like it was our house.
It was a relaxing and peaceful home base for our outings.Great location for day trips.
We were all fans of the decor and loved the historical nature of the home. All the little spots in the house and garden where one could go were fun and added to the charm.
Beautiful and lovely home! Really enjoyed our stay
We really enjoyed our stay! The house is beautiful, specious and has absolutly everything you need for your stay
2nd time staying, still amazing
We stayed over the long weekend and, once again, it was amazing. We are 5 families with kids between the ages of 3 and 10, and this location is great for everyone. The kids love to play on the grounds, and the adults appreciated the fire pit and hot tub. The house itself is beautiful and well stocked. Highly recommend!
We just love that groups are making a stay at Sand Rock Farm an annual tradition! We want you to love it and welcome any input to make your stay more relaxing and enjoyable. This year, the gardens are extra lush thanks to the rainy spring. The deck furniture has been recently coated with new stain and the new barbecue is bigger than the last one. Our two new sofa beds have comfortable memory foam mattresses and all beds have brand new duvet covers. Thank you for your comments!
Stunning, Welcoming and Tranquil Home
Our extended family of 11, from India, England and San Jose stayed at this delightful home after a family wedding. There were plenty of bedrooms, each with bathrooms, delightful areas inside the home to gather in small groups to catch up and the kitchen was the center of every evening as we made dinners. The most loved and enjoyed was the abundant outdoor areas for bird watching, sitting in quiet reflection near fountains, exploring the grounds, a fire pit to gather around while having a glass of wine after venturing out during the day. The location of the home was perfect for day trips to Santa Cruz, Ana Nuevo, Carmel, Big Sur, etc. Any number of beaches are close by for walks and wild life viewing.
The size and layout of the house lends itself to gathering in groups as well as being able to sit quietly alone. If you wants to sleep in, you can. If you want to sit in the garden, there are plenty of benches scattered around. If you want to gather as a group, there are multiple places to eat and chat. The hot tub was a great hit after a long day, before diner. There truly is someplace for everyone to enjoy.
The house is well stocked with everything you need, from a chef's dream kitchen to the bedrooms/baths. You just need to bring your food! The house is nestled amongst trees so you really feel like you are away from it all.
Derek and Jen, the owners, are accommodating in every way imaginable, friendly and have thought of everything!
We have stayed at VRBO's in Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and all over the US. By far this house has set the bar extremely high for any future rentals!
Best time ever! Place is better than expected and owners are fantastic! 110% satisfied. Highly recommend!!!
Thank you for the great review! It gives us great pleasure that people of all ages love this property! We have just power washed the deck and applied a fresh coat of stain to the deck furniture. All of the beds have brand new linens and duvet covers and our new spa bath towels are brand new, too. We have a new gas grill on the patio next to the kitchen. And, best of all, the April showers have turned the property into a garden paradise with abundant flowers, birds and deer. We hope families like yours will consider returning every year. Thank you!
