Exotic, Romantic Palapa. Watch And Hear Whales Breach, Eagle And Manta Rays Jump
- english, spanish
About Peter Valleau
We are two couples, Pete & Arlene and Bill and Maryann who have owned the palapa since 2008. We just started renting it out this year. We love visiting the palapa together and also separately. It is a complete get away from our always connected lifestyle. We love to use VRBO
Peter Valleau purchased this Cabin in 2008
Why Peter Valleau chose Cabo Corrientes
Our palapa provides a unique experience for someone who wants to get away from it all. It is a magical place where you can experience nature in the jungle, on the ocean and in the air.
What makes this Cabin unique
Watching manta rays the size of cars jumping out of the ocean or a mother humpback teach her baby how to slap his tail or fins has been a highlight of our stays. Snorkling and seeing a school of eagle rays beneath us was spectacular. Having a whale breach not more than 50 yards from our boat, (the water taxi Nayeli,) was a life experience.
Check-in: 10:30 AM
Children not allowed
There is staff on site at Chonchos to help you off the boat and get you established. The restaurant serves excellent, local fare and drinks upon prior request. The entire palapa will be yours. Please be aware that it is not suitable for small children as there are only short 18" railings. Beautiful and secluded beaches are located on both sides of the palapa and are less than a 5 minute walk away. In addition, our cliffside location provides privacy and outstanding views. Chonchos is accessed by water taxi from Boca de Tomatlan, near Mismaloya (approximately 30 minutes from Old Town Puerto Vallarta). The water taxi (Nayeli) makes two trips daily, 9am and 3pm, and the ride is a little over an hour depending on the load and conditions. The excursion is one of the highlights of your visit due to the outstanding scenery and marine life that you'll come across. Chonchos is an eco reserve consisting of 25 unique palapas. Each one is unique and magical in it's own special way. There are typically very few guests on site, ensuring you a romantic and peaceful get away. The village of Chimo is an authentic, Mexican fishing village. Here you can purchase fresh made tortillas, (everyday at 1PM.) Drop into one of the two restaurants for lunch or a beer, or purchase supplies. There are no ATM's in Chimo and dollars aren't easily accepted. Make sure you bring pesos preferably in denominations of 200 or less. Our friends have a tough time with the 500's. Chonchos is a rustic and rugged environment located in the jungle. There are amazing flora, fauna and marine life to keep you occupied. Cell service is spotty, texting works best. There is probably no internet. This is definitely an old school vacation, providing you a chance to unplug during your stay. Some other things to do: A short water taxi ride to a little farm at Pizota. From here it's a moderate hike up to a beautiful waterfall and deep freshwater pool. Afterwards Rosa will have cervazas ready on the beach. You can get one of the local divers to take you out in his boat. It's equipped with a compressor and air hoses sort of like Snuba, Mexican style. Real sportfishing boats with heavy gear are available in Yelapa. They could pick us up / drop off at Chonchos. For the fit, get one of the guys to take you on a little hike. Refugio is about 640 metres straight up the mountain through jungle. Then a very small ranch town. Nice place for lunch. Perhaps a day in Yelapa. Go para-sailing behind a boat, or para-sail (tandem) off the top of the mountain. There is also horseback riding, and, well, eating and drinking

Very clean, well-equipped. Great location for the reasonably fit.
Los Chonchos is an unique experience for those accustomed to the city life. My sister and I spent two weeks here after a week in Yelapa. Having to plan ahead and pack in all your food, Bev.,and supplies challenges you to be thoughtful and thrifty. We hiked to Chimo twice for items needed (and because the walk is so beautiful). Maracuya sits high above the ocean. We had two nights of stiff winds straight at us out of the North ( not cold just unsettling having to anchor everything and sleeping under nets billowing in the wind). It was a challenge to keep gas burners lit to cook until we discovered the wind deflector for the stove. Beaches are beautiful and sunsets/sunrises always spectacular! Rock and shell hunters will never be unhappy here! Kayaks available for use by guests are in need of replacement/repair...paddles broken, coming apart, seats detached missing, lashings broken and missing, NOT SAFE OR SEAWORTHY! All in all we had a wonderful time here and I would definitely come back. Staff onsite are helpful. Limited English except for Reuben who was amazing, giving us a tour of the entire village, bananas, and tamales his wife had made!
One of our favorite places!
We have been traveling to Los Chonchos for 4 years now to watch the whales in Banderas Bay. This is by far our favorite palapa. The views are spectacular. The palapa is super clean and has everything you need to cook, hang out, enjoy, whatever you want to do. Owners are very responsive and super easy to work with. We hope to come back to this paradise for many years to come...
Thanks for your great review and for staying with us again.
How were the whales during your visit? We'd heard that they were really active in December. January should even have been better.
We look forward to seeing you again next year.
Two weeks of ultimate relaxation!
Thanks for the use of your place Peter it was a great trip and experience! The paplapa and kitchen is really well outfitted as you said and the location great! We caught lots of fish to make and made a couple trips to Chimo for lunches, and supplies. The trip to Yelepa was fun for groceries. Being there for a longer amount of time than last year is neat because things seem to change daily with the sea and the jungle and we never tired of the beaches. Lots of whales one day, rough seas, calm seas, chacalaca alarm clock in the morning. Very special place and we hope to return.
Many thanks for staying with us and your comments, Dan.
It's really nice to hear such great things from someone who has stayed elsewhere in our little eco-resort paradise.
We'd love to have you back again.
Pete & Arlene
