Nice cottage, but not clean and not well maintained

  • 3 of 5

Basically this is a nice cottage, on a good location, but it needs cleaning and is in urgent need of a revamp. The double bed is way too small for two. To have a shower one has to stand in the narrow bathtub, partly behind a curtain, fixed with ducttape... On the walls hang large, ugly (US-)filmposters, not appropriate for an English cottage. Bookshelves dominate the living, as if the owner didn't have enough space for his books at home and uses the cottage as a storage room. Everything above eye level of an 1.80 m person is unclean. The tiny garden is not very inviting, mainly because one sits near a pile of junk. A small bench at the front of the house (in the morning sun) would be nice. This all sounds rather negative, but if the owner would take the trouble to look at his cottage critically and take all the neccessary measures, this is a very nice place to stay. Beautiful region, interesting places to visit.

Owner's Response: This review says more about the customer than it does about the cottage. The double bed is full-size. The house is cleaned between guests and is regularly maintained. There was some garden waste in our garden (not theirs) which was awaiting collection. She may not like my American Film posters but since it is my house I'm afraid that I really could not care less. This guest was atypically tall so that may explain why the bed was not to her comfort. I would suggest that she makes this clear to future owners. But all-in-all there are just some people who have to complain and she is one. Other owners be warned!

Cosy and very well situated

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay here and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The cottage is cosy and well-equipped. It is also ideally situated for the visits we had planned to Cambridge, Coventry and Oxford itself. Nearby Blenheim was also impressive. In the evenings we enjoyed walking in the countryside just down the road. One of the highlights was a culinary one: we wanted to treat our kids to their first Sunday pub lunch and Richard's recommendation of the Unicorn in Deddington hit the spot in a big way. Thanks again for that!

Lovely cottage, but...

  • 3 of 5

This is an updated review. My original review was as follows:

"Lovely characterful cottage, good location.

Quite clean, but not perfect (cobwebs add to the character!).

No TV in the living room (might be a plus for some); there is one in the bedroom which is at a very awkward viewing angle, and could do with updating to a flat screen.

No oven trays! How are you supposed to use the oven!

But, overall, would recommend."

I posted this mostly positive review on our second day. Next day the owner appeared and angrily demanded to know why we only gave him three stars when he normally gets five and that we should have contacted him so he could have the chance to address the problems we had. Fair enough, maybe we should, but I don't think he would have installed a television in the living room or gone around the cottage dusting for cobwebs. He brought round some new oven trays and said that the reusable foil trays they normally provide had probably been taken by the previous guests(?) and should have been replaced.

He subsequently sent a text message apologising for his 'abrupt' manner but I think he realised he'd overdone it. He had asked me to remove my first review and I think he thought that would be unlikely if he didn't apologise.

Something I didn't mention in my first review was that no wood was provided for the log burner - you are expected to find the local garage and buy some logs there, and then knock on the owner's door and ask for instructions. Every log burner we've had in the past has at least an initial supply of logs and kindling provided... after a long day travelling you don't want to venture out to buy wood. Hardly a five-star service.

I know that not everybody has the same standards of cleanliness, and everyone's requirements or expectations for a holiday cottage will be different, but I feel I was perfectly entitled to give a three-star rating based on what we found. But the owner's disproportionate response has turned a few relatively minor issues mentioned in a mostly positive review into something else. A real Basil Fawlty moment, I'm afraid.

In view of that, I'm not prepared to rate it more than three stars. It would easily get another star, or maybe the full five, if these matters were attended to and the cottage wasn't a little bit tatty around the edges... and if the owner had been a bit more conciliatory.

In conclusion, I can still recommend this cottage... but watch out for Basil!

Owner's Response: The guest’s description of me is a matter I am taking up with them directly. I shall not dignify it with a response that may prejudice any remedies that may be due to me. Instead I shall deal with the facts:- 1. There was bakeware in the kitchen. The guests had not checked all the cupboards. 2. There were two tiny cobwebs. The guest’s were unable to show me any more. 3. What difference does a flat screen TV make? The wide-screen CRT TV in the bedroom has Freeview and works perfectly. 4. The garage which sells logs for the woodburner is less than 500 metres away. We do not supply logs for the woodburner (unless we are asked beforehand - in which case we charge a small surplus). A more serious matter is that a window was broken by these guests and we were not informed. I shall be attempting to recover the costs of replacing it from them.

Comfortable and restful

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the Shire Cottage for one week. The property was exactly as pictured, clean, comfortable and very peaceful. We loved the backyard patio/garden, the sunny living room, and the well-appointed kitchen. The owners, Julie and Richard, were extremely helpful and wonderfully kind hosts. Our stay was made even better because of their kindness. The absolute only downside was the lack of bus service on Sunday since we didn't have a car. However, walking was a pleasure with the lovely scenery and the grocery coop and bus stop are just a minute away. We highly recommend this cottage to couples and families!

The Best!!!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I arrived from the states on January 10 for a four night stay. We were delighted with the cottage. We headed back to London for touring and her return to the U.S. but I liked Shire Cottage so much that I booked in again in early February for 6 nights on my own. Excellent location- stops for buses running from Mon.-Sat. to Woodstock, Oxford, and Witney are a 2 minute walk away, and the train station is a half mile. Transport from Heathrow to Oxford is easy by bus or train, and from Oxford there is a train (or bus) to this town. The owners graciously picked us up at the Hanborough Rail Station. But, enough about that- the real attraction here is the cottage itself, and its wonderful owners, Richard and Julie. The living room is from another time- two stone walls, inglenook area with wood stove for winter use, bookshelves, and beamed ceilings. Well equipped kitchen, two roomy bedrooms and a full and a half bath. Excellent and caring customer service from the owners- I could go on and on. Want to keep Shire Cottage a secret just for myself! There is a grocery store and a convenience store with post office within a five minute walk. The George and Dragon pub is a half-mile walk and makes a terrific Sunday roast and sticky toffee pudding. Also nearby is the Oxford Bus Museum, a fun day out for vintage bicycle/bus/Morris Minor and Mini fans of all ages.

I will be back for sure, and I must say I really do not want to leave. This cottage and its owners provide excellent value for the money and do not disappoint.

The perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

Cosy, charismatic, clean and comfortable. A delightful cottage in a great location. Richard & Julie (the owners who live next door) are fantastic, Richard is full of helpful hints of where to visit, mainly pubs that do great food and alcohol, he even turned up with fruit for breakfast one morning, which was a lovely surprise. You're welcome is fantastic, nice little touch of wine, bread and milk on arrival. Shire cottage is a lovely cottage in a delightful location and the hosts are out of this world, well done Richard & Julie, and thanks for a wonderful stay xxx
