Beautifully restored, lots of character, peaceful country setting
The Mill and Mill House have been restored to a very high standard and are full of character - chestnut beams, wooden floors and the original grinding stones. The houses are secluded, situated at the edge of a hamlet and are completely separate but can be interlinked. The kitchens are full equipped and are ideal for those who love to cook - and each house has a separate dining room and a comfortable lounge and a separate pool. Centrally heated. Perfect for a peaceful holiday in the scenic Garfagnana, known for its gastronomic traditions, authentic reasonably priced restaurants and countryside activities. The walled town of Castiglione with bars, shops and restaurant is nearby. The ancient city of Lucca is 1 hour away, Pisa airport 1.5 hour. Good train links from Castelnuovo. Relax by the pool, walk in the countryside or explore the medieval hill top villages of this undiscovered part of Tuscany. In the evenings eat out under the stars or enjoy a meal in one of many recommended local restaurants. Both properties have WIFI with good coverage throughout the properties.
The Mill and Mill House are ideal to rent together for large groups or families sharing - sleeping 17 plus sofa bed.
Outside: The Mill and Mill House are set in a peaceful location with their own garden with gazebo and garden furniture overlooking the river. The two private pools each have large wooden decking areas with sun loungers. In addition to the breakfast balcony for the Mill there is also a stone terrace with loungers overlooking the pool. The Mill House has a walled terrace and pergola with vines. There is an outside table tennis table and basketball net and a barbecues for each property.
In the future we are looking to offer afternoon cookery courses followed by a meal and evening wine tastings as options during your stay. Let us know if you would be interested.

About Adele Bright
My father grew up in this small hamlet in Tuscany before leaving for America in the 1950's. When we had a young family we had the chance to buy the old Mill and Mill House which were derelict by the 1990's and restore many of the original features and for us it became a family project, uncovering layers of family history.
Adele Bright purchased this House in 1995
Why Adele Bright chose Province of Lucca
The Mill and Mill House were the centre of community life in the area for generations. My great-great grandparents were the millers here in the 1880's and the properties stayed in the family until the 1980's. We rescued them from dereliction and again they have become an important part of the history of the village. Many of the locals have helped us to bring these important buildings back to life over many years.
What makes this House unique
We have maintained all of the original features of the buildings and the Mill still has all of the original mill stones and hoppers in its own little museum. The original chestnut beams and floors have been sanded and waxed, and new and old furniture has been chosen to complement the character of the houses.

Wonderfully relaxing holiday, beautiful setting
First off, and echoing the other reviewers, Adele the owner was really, really great to deal with from beginning to end. She offered lots of helpful advice in the run up to the holiday, and was highly responsive and available throughout the stay.
The arrival was perfect, with clear directions and a welcome hamper that was a total lifesaver!
We have 3 kids, 13, 11 and 10, who spent much of the stay in the pool, played cards on the terrace and watched DVDs in the evening.
We followed the very helpful information in the welcome pack provided for day trips, shopping, eating out, etc.
Highlights included the Parco Aventura treetop adventure course, Garfagnana Rafting, Barga, and a day trip to Lucca by train to bike around the walls. Il Pozzo and Linda's were great restaurant options. Castelnuovo was ideal for a short trip for ice cream, the supermarket and its gourmet deli. The local store in Castiglione sold all the basics, and Il Pavone was a great local pizza option.
The one drawback was the 2km of single track road between Casiglione and Isola, but I was pretty confident with it after a few days.
All-in-all, Il Mulino was a great place to hang out and relax, with excellent facilities and also a convenient base to explore the locale and enjoy the delights of Tuscany.
Stunning property with lovingly restored character
We had an amazing week in the Mill, having spent 4 days in Lucca before driving up to 'Il Mulino'. The location is stunning and the property itself has been lovingly restored, the photo's of the restoration and family history were fantastic to see. It's amazing how the family have managed to keep so much of the original character of the property AND incorporate all the home comforts. We had everything we needed and more, even having a go at making our own bread in the bread maker (the recipe worked out so well we made it twice!).
Frank S's description of the property in his review sums it up perfectly. We spent most of our week just relaxing by the pool, eating well, exploring the river and enjoying each other's company, such a great escape from our hectic lives back home. We loved the wildlife too, including butterflies, lizards and beautiful mock hummingbird moths and the moon and stars at night were magical.
We did go to the supermarket in Pieve and the bar with the balcony and great view which was recommended in the book. We ventured out on one day to Castelnuevo, where we found the recommended restaurant 'Il Vecchio Mulino' which was a great experience. We were sat down at a long table (made from the wood of old wine boxes) next to an Italian family, and brought a number of courses of local produce - and the biggest mortadella I've ever seen, carved infront of us! Real characters and fantastic food. We were lucky to get a seat as it filled up fast. We had an English couple sit next to us who filled us in on what the local newspaper was saying about the area, and told us of the food festival in their village the following weekend (unfortunately we were leaving the following day). All in all a truly memorable experience!
Adele was also fantastic, great communication beforehand and also while we were there. We would absolutely love to return, and explore the area a bit more. We may try to take some more of the family next time! Thanks again for a truly memorable holiday!
Fantastic property in a stunning location...
Prior to arriving at Il Mulino (The Mill) we had high expectations of this property - and we were not disappointed. Clearly the owners have invested much time and effort on their restoration project, and it seems to us they have struck a perfect balance between retaining the historical character and features of the property, while simultaneously incorporating modern essentials. Although the windy road leading up-then down- the mountain to access Il Mulino can be a little intimidating at first, this also adds to the dramatic setting of the property within the hills of the Garafagna region. The rich, dense vegetation and almost tropical canopy of trees made for dramatic landscapes and sometimes felt like we were on the set of Jurassic Park! Nevertheless, the abundant sunshine hit the pool and decking area around 9.00am each day and was good through to about 4pm. Wonderful sunrises and sunsets. The 4 bedrooms, two bathrooms, WC, kitchen, lounge and verandah area were all spotless, well maintained and fully functional. The property is about a 10 minute drive into the nearest village, another 5 minutes on to Pieve Fosciana, a small town with a couple of supermarkets, and about 40 minutes from Lucca. Pisa and Florence both within easy driving distance, but beware - Florence is closed on a Monday!! The house "manual" is an extremely useful document with some great tips. Local restaurants are fantastic, especially Il Pozzo in Pieve Fosciana, and up the mountain, Il Casone and Pensione Linda in particular - amazing food and great value. We had several email exchanges with Adele, the owner of the property prior to departure, and she could not have been more helpful and friendly. We spent 3 wonderful weeks at Il Mulino and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others. We look forward to returning at some point in the future. Frank & Lesley.
great property for groups in a beautiful setting
We had a fantastic stay in this lovely property. Plenty of space for all. If you want to watch a film, paddle in the river, cook some selicious food or enjoy a g&t on the terrace there is room for it all. We had large lunches, water balloon fights, pasta, pasta and more pasta. It was a perfect base to explore and fun was had by all. Thank you Adele for all your help.
Beautiful house, garden and nature!
We've had two fantastic weeks at The Mill! Our kids (boy and girls in the age of 14 and 11) all had a great time, as did we. The garden is a lovely place to eat, play table tennis and to relax, the river is attractive for kids who like to climb and build little dams, the environment is lovely for walking and hiking and the pool is nice and refreshing. Castiglione is a very nice little Italian village and of course we visited towns like Barga, Lucca and Pisa and (the market) in Castelnuovo. The children loved the Adventure park (half an hour drive). The owners are very friendly and helpful (even from a great distance), as is the housekeeper that lives about a hundred meters from the Mill. A real treasure in Tuscany!
A Peaceful Haven in Rural Tuscany
We are just completing our second stay at this magical property, having come all the way from the west coast of Canada to visit it again. We love the tranquility of this location, where the only sounds are birdsong and the nearby river. The house could not be more charming, with its rough wood beams and stairs, vine-covered terraces and large kitchen in which we made many memorable meals. Outstanding restaurants and well-stocked markets are a short drive away in the surrounding valley, as is the train station. We were able to take the train for day trips to Lucca and Florence which was very convenient.
We will hopefully be able to come here again in the future; until then we will fondly remember the beauty and peacefulness of this unspoiled corner of Tuscany.
The Mill and Mill House are situated at the edge of a small hamlet, a picturesque 10 minutes drive from the walled medieval town of Castiglione with its bars, shops and spectacular views. The larger town of Castelnuovo with its weekly market is 20 minutes away. The ancient city of Lucca (1 hour) is perfect for a day out and a cycle along the ancient walls., Pisa airport 1.5 hours. Good train links from Castelnuovo to Florence. The Garfagnana is an area of outstanding natural beauty - well known for walking, trekking, mountain biking, fishing and other countryside pursuits. The Mill and Mill House are very close to the Garfagnana Trekking route, there is a horse riding centre in Castiglione and a forest climbing course 20 minutes away. The Garfaganana is a gastronomic area with many traditional family restaurants serving excellent local food at very reasonable prices and many food festivals during the summer.
Ski: There is a small ski resort (with a fantastic restaurant) 35 mins from the Mill at Casone - ideal for beginners and children. The extensive resort of Abetone is 2 hours away.
