About David MacDonald
We absolutely love Scotland and the Loch Lomond area in particular. We are over the moon when we hear that guests have had a great time staying in our property at Luss. In addition to Craigton smiddy, we also run a guesthouse within the National Park. We are keen walkers and love the outdoor life.
David MacDonald purchased this Cottage in 2007
Why David MacDonald chose Luss
Craigton Smiddy is ideal because it is set in the iconic village of Luss, some 10 miles from the town of Alexandria. The cottage has a large luxurious living area and is situated in the quiet part of this beautiful area, yet is within a short walking distance to the village centre with its shops, restaurants and spectacular lochside views and walks. From 2007 until 2017, Craigton Smiddy was a family home. From 2018 onwards, the cottage is being offered as a luxury holiday rental and has been upgraded accordingly with brand new beds, furniture and other fixtures and fittings. The garden has a beautiful burn running from the top of the garden and under the cottage to the river beyond. The burn can be viewed from the living room and makes a perfect backdrop for a relaxing holiday time. The village of Luss is one of the prettiest in Loch Lomond, and certainly one of the most appreciated by travellers from all over the world. Basing your Scottish holiday in Craigton Smiddy, Luss, gives you the chance to experience the beauty of the Scottish countryside and also be well positioned for day trips further north to Glencoe, Glen Etive, Oban and many more great places of interest. To the south you have the city of Glasgow only 40 minutes away by car or train from nearby Helensburgh. Glasgow is a superb shopping centre and is blessed with many fine art galleries, museums, restaurants and all the other types of venues you would expect from a modern city. Closer to home, Luss offers a variety of water sports activities and a host of other outdoor pursuits like walking, cycling, fishing and golf - all of which can be reached in a very short time from the front door of Craigton Smiddy.
What makes this Cottage unique
The property has a large conservatory/dining room that is quite separate from the main living room so there is loads of space for guests to enjoy the property doing their own thing The location itself is unique as it is on the quiet edge of Luss but only a short walk from the banks of Loch Lomond and from the village centre. Craigton Smiddy is also detached and offers a level of privacy that holidaymakers appreciate.

The best place to stay in Luss
We could not say enough nice things about this house or David. We held a min-reunion with 4 other relatives here. We all found it plenty spacious. Everything from bedding to large showers to kitchen equipment was top end and well cared for. We loved the solarium where we ate meals. There is off-street parking enough for 3 cars. The house is right on the road but there is very little traffic and we heard nothing that bothered us. An easy walk to town. Be sure to walk the Faerie Trail.
Thank you Marsha for your positive review. I'm so glad you all enjoyed your stay at Craigton Smiddy and thank you for looking after the place so well.
I hope you return for a second visit one day.
Best house ever!
That is what our 9-year old said to the owner David, when he showed us around Craigton Smiddy. This cottage has everything you might wish for or need during a shorter or longer stay. We were with two couples and 1 child and each had our own luxurious bedroom AND bathroom. We particularly enjoyed the spacious kitchen and dining area in the lovely conservatory. We received a warm welcome from David who, very kindly, already arranged some supplies for us.
Unfortunately, we only had two days in the beautiful Loch Lomond area. Far too little time to see and do everything we intended. We did climb the hill and enjoyed a magnificent view of the Loch.
Craigton Smiddy for us is a cottage to remember and hopefully to return to sometime in the future.
amazing owners, amazing property, amazing location.
Thoughtful hosts and a fantastic property in a beautiful location. We couldn't have asked for more
Thank you for your great review. You were a lovely party to host and we really appreciate the way you looked after the property so well.
All the best, David
Extraordinary stay in the very best way.
We spent a few glorious days at this property and were sad we couldn't stay longer. This property was a wonderful way to end our journey in Scotland and it offered all the comforts of home. The owner met us and walked us through the property showing us how everything worked - especially since there is on-demand hot water, provided some welcome refreshments and staples, and really provided a welcome beyond reproach.
The house itself is stunning. It is comfortably and beautifully decorated and I loved mix of traditional and modern. The conservatory was a lovely space to sit and enjoy the views from outside without threat of rain and I loved sinking down into the living room sofas. The bedrooms were well appointed with both nice linens and beds, it was also nice to have one room set up with twin beds for the kids. The six of us were extremely comfortable and it really was nice to have a TV in each of the bedrooms to allow the kids to have some time on their own. It is a touch that isn't always available, but appreciated, even though we didn't use most of the TVs. The extra touches throughout made it a house to remember.
We chose this location for its proximity to Glasgow Airport. It was a short 30 minute drive to the airport but meant we could spend our final days in peace vs. the hustle and bustle of Glasgow. It was a fitting end to a lovely holiday in Scotland.
Thank you so much for a lovely stay!

A little slice of heaven on earth! Couldn't be more perfect! We traveled from America to find this amazing cottage! The bedrooms are very large, the kitchen is magnificent and the creek running through the property creates a peaceful refuge. The owner thought of everything. We felt very much at home! Thank you to David for a Great cup of coffee (my 1st ever french press). Love to come back again next year! Cheers!
