We have four converted barns available to rent individually or in any combination, depending on the number of guests you need to accommodate. Originally a working arable farm called Jepcrack's, we have converted each of the barns to provide high end accommodation.
Ideal for a quiet get away, romantic break or celebration. For wedding accommodation, we are close to Vaulty Manor, Braxted Park, Layer Marney Tower and Prested Hall.
Past guests include celebrities, Olympians and film crews. The Shire Stables was also featured on the tv show 'Guess this House'.
We provide fluffy bath sheets, hand towels and bath mats and the beds are made with Egyptian cotton linen.
We are flexible on check in days (except Sundays).
THE SHIRE STABLES
This is a detached barn with 4 bedrooms. 3 of which are en-suite.
The downstairs bedroom has a feature wall that was the original stable wall. This room can be set up as a king size or twin. The bedroom has an en-suite. It is a very spacious marble bathroom with jacuzzi bath and walk in shower.
There are two main bedrooms upstairs and a third bedroom that leads off bedroom 3.
Bedroom two has a balcony overlooking the fields with a table and chairs so that you can sit and enjoy the views. It has a king size bed and en-suite (bath with shower above).
The third bedroom is very spacious and has a French style bed. This room has an identical en-suite to bedroom 2.
The fourth bedroom has cabin style twin beds and is accessed off bedroom 3. Ideal for a family or group of friends.
There is also a separate bathroom downstairs with walk in shower.
Guests in this barn have exclusive use of the hot tub which is in a secluded position in the back garden There is large BBQ and large outdoor table and chairs plus an additional table and bench.
The kitchen/ diner has a large range style cooker, fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. There is a large dining table and chairs for 10 guests.
The wood burning stove can be seen from the dining area and lounge. We provide a large wheelbarrow of logs for the wood burner.
The lounge has a selection of chairs and sofas. One sofa can be turned into a king size sofa bed for up to 2 additional guests.
We have travel cots and high chairs for young guests which we provide free of charge.
There is a wonderful outside space to enjoy the views and watch the birds, rabbit and possibly deer, maybe with a glass of something nice in hand.
There is a play area across the road and we have a selection of bicycles.
The Cart Lodge, Barley Barn and Hay Barn share a large car park and front lawn. Each barn has its own rear patio and garden. There is also a play area with swings, slide, play house and climbing frame.

Our converted barns are situated in glorious, rural isolation but with easy access directly off the A12 in Essex. Located on the edge of the village of Great Totham, the barns offer lovely views over arable farmland..
The barns are set in a quiet location where you can hear birdsong rather than traffic notice, but just a pleasant 10 to 15 minute walk to pubs, restaurant and village shop. The historic town of Maldon less than 10 minutes drive.
Heybridge Basin with estuary walks, barges, lock, pubs and Tiptree Jam tea room is a 5 minute drive.
There are numerous fly fishing lakes within a 5 minute drive and golf ranges from 3 to 15 minutes drive.
Colchester Zoo is a 20 minute drive.
Chelmsford and Colchester 30 minutes.
Brentwood 35 to 40 minutes.
London by train 40 to 45 minutes from Witham station.

The CART LODGE, HAY Barn and BARLEY Barn are next to each other and almost opposite the Shire Stables. Each barn has a separate patio area with coal BBQ and there is a large shared front lawn. There is off road parking and additional hard standing parking available.

Check in is flexible from Monday to Friday. Please enquire for late availability and Saturday check in. Sorry it is not usually possible to accommodate bookings starting from Sunday.
The nearest railways station in Witham is approximately 6 miles away. Trains run regularly to London Liverpool Street with a journey of of 40 to 45 minutes. The shopping centre at Stratford is accessed on the same train journey.
Suffolk, Kent, Oxford and Cambridge are accessed easily by motorway.
Essex is a largely rural county dotted with pretty villages and beautiful farmland. Essex is steeped in history and there are a great variety of historical sites to visit in the county including Anglo Saxon, Medieval, Roman and Tudor architecture. Essex has one of the longest coastlines of any county in England. Its network of coastal footpaths, rivers and estuaries attract walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers every year.
Getting married at St.Peter's Church in Great Totham? Located just a few hundred yards away, this is an ideal location for guests to stay. Also ideal for guests attending weddings at Braxted Park, Layer Marney Tower, Vaulty Manor. and Prested Hall.
Babies under 1.5 years using a travel cot are not included in the guest numbers.
Bank holiday Mondays are weekend rates. Prices include linen, bedding and towels. Heating is electric central heating and wood burning stove. We provide an initial supply of logs, kindling and fire lighters. Additional large bags of logs and kindling at cost rate.
We take a refundable deposit through the website should there be breakages, theft or excessive cleaning costs. Bedding, linen, towels, bath mats and tea towels are included in the cost.
We are flexible on check in days during the week, depending on existing bookings. For Saturday and Sunday check arrivals please enquire.

In the Cart Lodge we welcome up to two well behaved, small sized dogs (or cats!) or 1 medium / large dog for a small additional charge of £6 each per day to cover cleaning costs. Please enter the number of pets on your booking.
RENTAL RATES: Should you book more than eight weeks prior to departure you will be asked to provide a deposit of 25% of the total rental. The remaining balance is due eight weeks prior to your stay. Should you book less than eight weeks prior to your stay, you will be required to pay the full payment.
CANCELLATION If you wish to cancel you must inform us by e-mail. If cancellation is made the following charges will be levied:• More than 12 weeks prior to stay – 100% refund less administration fee of 5%• More than 8 weeks prior to stay - Loss of deposit• Between 8 weeks to 6 weeks - 50% charge• Between 6 weeks to 5 weeks - 85% charge. After 5 weeks 100% charge.
Arrival 3pm Departure 10.30am to allow us to clean for the next guests. We can be a little flexible on this times if there is no occupancy prior to, or after your stay. We kindly ask guests to keep the property and all furniture, fittings and effects, in or on the property, in the same state of repair and condition as the commencement of the period, and to leave the property in the same state of cleanliness and general order in which it was found. We will, where possible, accommodate any guest's requests regarding minor accommodation amendments but we cannot guarantee acceptance.
