The accommodation is all on one level and ideally suited for families with small children and people with mobility problems. There is a lockable shed outside so bikes can be safely stored and there's also an outside tap for washing muddy bikes and boots. We know how important it is to keep your children happy and entertained when on holiday so we provide a selection of books, toys and dvds. For families with babies and toddlers we provide nightlights, a baby monitor, toddler cutlery and a cot and high chair. Mobile phone reception in the area is poor so a landline telephone is provided free of charge (subject to a fair usage policy). Well behaved dogs are welcome (some T&Cs apply) and are charged at an extra rate of £25 per week.

Great location

Fantastic cottage

Family friendly & would strongly recommend Badger Sett for family with young children. Plenty of board games kept our little ones entertained.

Great communication from the host.

Wow - we all love it!!

  • 5 of 5

What an introduction to the lakes! The scenary on the drive to the cottage was fab! The cottage was beautiful and we were so pleased with it. There was plenty of room for us all - 2 adults and 3 kids. Dom had kindly left us a bottle of wine so while the kids played on the Wii and had a gander through the toys, games and DVDs, me and the hubby poured ourselves a glass and took in the surroundings. The house is so well equipped it had everything you need - it's home from home. The village is only a short walk up the road which is really pretty. We drove to Keswick a couple of times and Penrith as the kids had money to spend - both are only a short car journey and if you are luckily enough to be the passenger - wow, soak up those views! Really lovely. Hubby is a keen bike rider so thoroughly enjoyed getting up early and biking off coming back with photos of stunning scenary. It was so good to just back to the simple things in life - togging up and getting out there, coming back to a cosy warm house with everuthing you need and enjoying a bubble bath!! As I said at the beginning of this review this was our first proper introduction to the lakes and this holiday has made it one of our firm favourites. We were so impressed with everything that we have booked up at The Badger Sett for same time next year. Can't wait!!!!

Everything we wanted for a lovely relaxing break

  • 5 of 5

We arrived very late with no provisions which was our misfortune. We did have a bottle of my favorite wine sitting on the table waiting for us though thank you .

The Cottage was warm and welcoming there was everything you would need in the cottage and more . Bedrooms great but largest one had a slight damp smell ,living rooms very comfortable . Bathroom lovely nice to have 2 . Wifi worked best sitting at the dining table .

Garden very secure our four legged furies loved it . The only noise was from the working farm .

Loved it all .The surrounding area is lovely . Our only dissapointing was that we couldn't stay for a full week . We had to leave on Thursday to sail home to Jersey on the Friday .

Thank you for letting us stay

Debbie , Sue, Brenda and Kath and the fury four legged friends

Excellent cottage in the countryside perfect for toddlers

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay here. There was 6 of us, 4 adults and 2 toddlers. It was a very spacious cottage with big spacious rooms. Being on one level made the cottage toddler save as no need for stair gates. The layout of the property was brilliant. Could not fault it.

Situated in a secluded valley, The Badger Sett is one of just a handful of houses that make up the hamlet of Newlands. The lovely Lakeland village of Hesket Newmarket, with its famous co-operatively owned pub and micro brewery, The Old Crown, is just a one mile stroll down a peaceful country lane. The remote Caldbeck Fells are on the doorstep and provide fantastic opportunities for walking and mountain biking and The Caldew and Caldbeck Rivers which run through our valley are excellent for kayaking. The classic peaks of Blencathra and Helvellyn are both close by and provide some of the best walking and scrambling routes in the UK. If you prefer more hustle and bustle the popular town of Keswick is a 25 minute drive away whilst historic Hutton-in-the-Forest with its famous horse trials is just around the corner. For long distance walkers The Cumbria Way passes through our valley and for road cyclists The Reivers Route (known as the Return CTC) goes right past the bottom of our drive!

Golf: There are a number of top quality and picturesque courses all within easy reach.

Stony Holme, near Carlisle (16 miles) features an 18-hole 5787-yard par 69 course, as well as a challenging nine-hole par 3 course and a 16-bay floodlit driving range.

Silloth-on-Solway (23 miles) is a fine coastal links course with stunning views of the Galloway Hills to the north, and south to the Lakeland fells and the distant Isle of Man. The Championship links of 6,641 yards has been laid out over the sand-hills west of town and is an R & A Regional Qualifying Course for the Open.

Keswick (12 miles) features an 18 hole, 6225 yards, Par 71 course with commanding views of Lakeland scenery.

Penrith (14 miles) is a beautiful and well-balanced featuring an 18 holes, 6047 yards, Par 69 course.
