About Susanne Metzger
When I am not in Decontra, I work as a garden designer in London. My husband and I met in Italy in the '80s when we both worked in Milan. We always knew that once our children were grown, we would return to Italy. Because we both love walking in the mountains, Abruzzo, was a perfect choice.
Susanne Metzger purchased this Apartment in 2012
Why Susanne Metzger chose Caramanico Terme
We first saw this old abandoned farmhouse in 2006 (see our website Majella Mountain Escape for pictures of the original house), although, it took us five years to convince the owners (a brother and sister who'd emigrated to Australia in the late '50s) to sell it. We knew immediately that this was the place for us. The views were so beautiful from the terrace that we immediately saw the potential to let those views into the house by opening it out completely.
What makes this Apartment unique
The beauty of this house is, above all, its views, combined with the incredible serenity of Decontra, and its access to nature: you could spend a week walking many different routes from the house, through an incredible variety of landscapes, environments, flora and fauna, down through beautiful gorges and up through beautiful beech glades to high mountain meadows and the peaks of the Majella. And yet the real world is conveniently at hand - two hours by car to Rome, less than an hour to beautiful Adriatic beaches, and just 40 minutes to the Pescara airport or train station, with connections to all major European destinations.

What a wonderful place!
We’ve just returned from our second visit to the Metzger’s beautiful property and can’t wait to book the next trip. The area is spectacularly beautiful and view from apartment really has to be seen to be believed. The hosts are extraordinarily generous and it has been an added bonus to meet them and benefit from local knowledge. Can not recommend this highly enough to anyone who enjoys mountains and walking and beauty.
Wonderful property in exceptionally beautiful place with lovely owners
Belvedere is a wonderful place. The setting is staggeringly beautiful. The flat is extremely stylish and comfortable, and the owners are generous and warm. If you like mountains, walking, nature and friendly people then this is a perfect place to stay. We felt so welcome and cannot wait to return. Huge thanks to the fabulous Metzgers for a great holiday.
More than a pleasant and beautiful place
There are many reasons to select this location.
Susanne and Geoffrey have been great hosts, thoughtful, cool, and are very interesting people at the same time. They made me feel at home and this was great and unexpected additional pleasure.
The apartment is functional and cosy, with a splendid 270° view on the mountainside.
During a rainy week of May (my case), a hot Summer season, a radiant Fall or a snowy Winter you can probably feel the same warm and peaceful sensation that I could experience.
The Maiella National Park is a beautiful and inspirational place, not just because of magnificent landscapes, superb hikes, and beautiful old fashion villages. There is something radiating a positive energy in the area, bringing you back to the sources of life and history. Strange enough, you can feel it in your heart and in your mind, once you spend few days around..
Thanks Susanne and Geoff for helping me discover this wonderful spot.
About half an hour from the house is one of Abruzzo's most famous wineries, Zaccagnini, credited with being the first vintner to internationally popularise the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo varietal.
It's also easy to go to the sea. Pineto, about 45 minutes away, is a lovely family beach where you can rent chairs and an umbrella for the day and have a delicious seafood salad lunch...or slightly farther down the coast is the very picturesque Ripari di Giobbe (Jupiters Haven).
Some of the best skiing in Italy is also about an hour away - a high plateau called the Cinque Miglie (five miles) which has over 110 kilometres of piste. It's not only one of the snowiest places in Italy, but costs about half of what a holiday in the Alps would cost.
