About the property

Three double bedroom stone character cottage for rent

Traditional Stone Longère In Secluded Hamlet

Peaceful Location 5 Mins By Car To Local Market Town

Sleeps 6 (in 3 Bedrooms)

If you’re reading this you’ll probably already know that the Breton countryside is the perfect location to reinvigorate yourself with a combination of the joys of a slower, more organic lifestyle, the accessibility of modern amenities and fantastic beaches and rural vistas. Our property accentuates that experience – based in an Anglo-French farming hamlet far from the madding crowd, yet within 2 miles of a bustling village (with its authentic weekly market for local produce, and Carrefour supermarket for everything else) and 15 of a thriving city, a stay at Le Millet (a stone longère, converted from stables, now with beams and character a-plenty) will transport you to a gentler and more romantic era, without sacrificing anything you need for a comfortable holiday.

Nearby attractions include the medieval town of St Brieuc with excellent shopping, half-timbered houses and cathedral and the beaches of the Cote d’Armor only 40 mins away at St Laurent or Pleneuf Val Andre. L’Hermitage Lorge is perfect for walking and cycling. Swimming is available at Moncontour and La Tourelle.

Accessible from the UK via ferry at St Malo port (1 hour 10 mins west) or Roscoff port (1 hour 30 mins east) and the airport of Dinard, with flights to East Midlands airport, (1 hour 10 mins west).

Our house sleeps up to six people in three bedrooms, there is a bathroom and separate toilet. There is a large garden with working well at the rear of the property that is laid mostly to lawn, here you'll find the terrace which garden furniture and barbecue area.

The house has free wifi and everything you need for an enjoyable holiday in the countryside.

We do not provide bed linens or towels as people often prefer to bring their own, but we are able to if required (please enquire), laundry facilities are also available locally at extra cost.

We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Jolie petite maison de campagne très reposante.

  • 4 of 5

A recommander.

There’s a tonne of guide books but here’s our recommendations, based on a combination of personal experience, and what might suit families with younger children.

Lovely towns to visit for a wander (may not suit kids):

Dinan – Gorgeous medieval fortified town with markets in the main square (check days in the guides).

Moncontour – Smaller version of Dinan, no market but very pretty with a couple of local bars in the main square

Lamballe – Another great market town and home of the National Stud (Le Haras) which does tours round the stables and shows weekly in the summer

Quintin – Yet another pretty town with a market on a Tuesday. Chateau there and worth a poke about.

St Brieuc – apart from its out-of-town shopping doesn't have a lot to recommend it. It's not horrible by UK standards, it's just there are better alternatives

Loudeac – again, nice for a wander, and if you fancy a drive in a different direction

Jugon les Lacs – Who’d have guessed it? Another super little town. This one has a market on a Friday and some great walks round the lake to Dolo. Treat yourself to a gallette saucisse from a mobile seller while you’re there.

Eating out:

Plœuc has a good pizzeria (Mariala's), a bistro that is more of a bar and the Hotel de Commerce that has a restaurant. We’ve only really eaten at Mariala's, but can testify that both the pizzas and the themed evenings (we went on a cous cous night) are excellent – everything's homemade. The house rose wine wasn’t bad either. The kebab shop is great too, it’s turkey apparently and not lamb on the big stick.

There's a very nice restaurant on the main road into Moncontour called Le Mullette. We've eaten there, as have some of our guests. It's mainly, though not exclusively, seafood. It's got quite a grown-up atmosphere, and it's not cheap, but given that the French have a different (better) attitude to children in restaurants than the British, in you fancy a treat it's a good place to go. About 300

yards on the Plœuc side of Moncontour (in Gare de Moncontour), there's a new pizza place which is very nice – Stu’s been there now!

There are a good selection of nice eating places in Dinan. And a fish and chip shop in case you’re missing home too much.

If you want to fill your belly at lunchtime there’s Chez Marylene in L’Hermitage Lorge which is a routiers café. It does a help-yourself buffet starter, main course, cheese, dessert plus all the wine, cider and water you can drink for 12€ per person. Don’t book anything for the afternoon.

At lunchtimes we're big fans of Flunch – the nearest is attached to the giant Carrefour at St Brieuc.

If you want to go a little further afield, Cancale on the coast near St. Malo is good – you can see the oyster farms from the top of the beach, you can buy and eat them from beach stalls (and contribute to the oystershell beach in the process!), and there's an extensive selection of seafront restaurants.

At lunchtimes, we tend to live on fresh bread, salads, cheeses, pates and hams, whilst in the evenings there's little better than chucking some stuff on the barbeque whilst the sun goes down at the end of the garden, or else buying a kilo of saucisse off Plœuc market and cooking it up with some tinned lentils, green beans and potatoes – simple, quick to prepare, cheap, and wonderful with red wine.

Talking of which, it's easy to be overwhelmed with the choice of French wines. In our humble opinion, you can't go far wrong with any of the Roche Mazet wines (Merlot, Cab Sauv, etc). At c. 2.60€ a bottle, it's good-value, good-tasting everyday wine.

The guides are better than us on this one, but we like the ones at Pleneuf Val Andre and Erquy. The nearest is probably Les Rosaires and St Laurent de la Mer up near Plerin. Binic is also a super resort a bit further up that coast, and they have a good market on a Tuesday apparently.

I’ve picked up a leaflet for the pool in Jugon Les Lacs which is in the pile, there’s also one at La Tourelle which is signed from the main road between Moncontour and Plœuc and found at Le Pont des Valees, Plemy-Moncontour. There's also the Orphea waterpark at St. Quintin, but we haven't tried it.

Quintin has some nice shops round the main square, Dinan is again the largest place we visited that has a super selection. Lamballe has some nice gift shops too. The beachy resorts have the usual stuff including all the touristy accoutrements. St Brieuc has a few open air markets a week, decent shopping streets and the hypermarkets of all shapes and sizes are on the outskirts in Tregueux and Langeux

Every town worth its salt has a market day which is a super way of picking up supplies, full list of the dates in the guide books. There are night markets in summer too.
