Overview

Axbridge Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Modern but cosy rural retreat in the heart of the Mendips

Poplar Farm Holiday Cottage invites you to relax and unwind, perhaps with a glass of our own cider in hand, sitting outside gazing over to the Mendips and Cheddar Gorge.

Converted only this year, we offer a very well appointed, two bedroom, two shower room luxury base, gas centrally heated, from which to sample and explore the delights of Somerset and all that the West Country has to offer. The open plan living area and kitchen, which is particularly well equipped, are both light and airy, and have solid oak floors running through to the hall and both bedrooms. Bedroom one has a fitted wardrobe within which is a good sized chest of draws. Wall lights are fitted above the king size double bed which can be adapted to two single beds as shown. Leading off is an en-suite shower wet room with sink and toilet.

Bedroom two also has a good size wardrobe and chest of draws, with bedside cabinets and individual lamps.

Outdoor facilities: Just outside your front door is the garden, an area of lawn that can be lit by the exterior lighting of the cottage on those warm summer evenings. Outdoor furniture, tables, sun shade, and barbecue are provided and is equally suited to breakfasting whilst planning the days events.

The parking area just outside the cottage has space for a number of cars if necessary, with the potential for under-cover storage of bicycles if requested. The under cover area also allows for washing to be hung out to dry, safe in the knowledge that a shower will not catch you out. Don't worry, pegs are provided.

A further garden area extends down to the veg patch, orchard and small pond.

This area is separately fenced off, and often has a few of our sheep in residence, saving me the bother of mowing the lawn. They are guaranteed to be here during lambing as this takes place in the barn to the right as you look at the cottage front door.

Perfect countryside holiday cottage

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a wonderful week in this delightful holiday cottage for a family holiday (two adults and two year old twin boys). There was good communication from the owners for booking and organising the stay via email.

We received a warm welcome from Simon and Annette on arrival and found everything and more that we needed to settle in, including home made cider and freshly laid duck eggs. My boys especially liked seeing the sheep and ducks on the farm.

The cottage was beautifully decorated, well laid out and spotlessly clean. There was a shared parking area but otherwise it was very private. Simon and Annette were very friendly and were on hand if you needed anything.

The cottage is in a small rural village but is only a few minutes drive from wedmore, where you can find shops and pubs, and it is a few miles from Cheddar. At only half an hour from the city of Wells and the beach at Weston Super Mare and under an hour from Bath and Longleat Safari Park we found plenty to keep us occupied during our stay.

Overall, the perfect place to go if you want a quiet countryside getaway with good access for exploring surrounding Somerset.

Owner's Response: Hi Amanda, Thank you so much for writing such a complimentary revue of our cottage, it is always so pleasing to hear that our guests have enjoyed the cottage, we do our best to make sure that it is spotless and has a few creature comforts, not just the basics. We would also like to compliment you on your obvious appreciation of our cider, it can be an acquired taste but you were away from the off, well done!! Anyway thank you again for going to the trouble of writing the revue and for your compliments, maybe we will see you again in the near future. Our best wishes to you all. Love Simon & Annette.

Delightful holiday cottage

  • 5 of 5

Located just outside of Cheddar, with stunning views of the Mendips from the garden, this is really the perfect little cottage for a Somerset holiday.

It was spotlessly clean, well-equipped and tastefully decorated. My wife and I visited with our two little girls and they loved everything about it. The pigs, sheep, ducks and chickens were an instant hit with the kids and wine, beer and cider meant there was something for the grown-ups too! We've often had reservations about holiday cottages adjoining the owners' property but the layout of this place ensured complete privacy without impeding the availability of Simon & Annette, who went above and beyond to answer questions and provide valuable holiday tips and information that made our stay even better.

Overall, I cannot fault this perfect little place. We wouldn't think twice about returning to this idyllic little cottage.

Owner's Response: Hi Matt and the rest of your gang! Don't worry about sending your revue in twice, we can live with as many revue's like this as you can send, thank you all so much, we greatly appreciate it. Sorry we were shearing when you first arrived, good to see that you were all ok with the site of blood, mine not the sheep's I hasten to add, and thank you for bringing lovely weather with you. It now only takes us half an hour to do one sheep, don't think i will be giving up the day job just yet. We are delighted that you all had a great time whilst with us, and that you appreciated our efforts. Thank you very much for picking us. Kind regards from a delighted Simon & Annette.

Owner's Response: Hi Olga & Al So good to hear from you both again and thank you so much for being so complimentary, we really enjoyed meeting you, and would love to see you again if ever your this way. We often wondered how you got on driving up to the Lakes and Scotland after leaving us on your "Grand Tour", obviously you made it, and safely back to Canada, well done. You were our last guests for this year, and this closed period has given us a window to hopefully improve the garden in the front and also to further improve the parking at the rear. Our best wishes to you both, and thank you again for taking the trouble to add a comment. We do our best to ensure that people enjoy their stay with us and are delighted that you remember your stay and us fondly. Kind regards, Simon & Annette.

Owner's Response: Hi Helge, Martina, Femke and Sintje Sorry for the delay in responding to your kind comments, we had a short break ourselves. Good to hear from you all again, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us, and thanks for taking the trouble to send in a revue, especially one such as this, you are very kind. We really enjoyed having you stay with us and would love to see you again if you are ever in this area again. We hope that your onward trip down to Cornwall was equally enjoyable, and that the motor home was returned unscathed. Thank you again for choosing to stay with us. Kind regards, Simon & Annette.

Wedmore, which is the nearest village, is just 2 miles away and is the turning point for travellers heading to Gastonbury, Wells, or the seaside towns of Burnham On Sea, and Weston-super-Mare. Alternatively, a drive up the impressive Cheddar Gorge, just 3 miles away, will deliver you to the top of the Mendips, an area criss-crossed with foot paths. Why not head on to the World Heritage Site, the City of Bath, its Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, the Spa and Georgian architecture, constructed from the local Bath Stone.

With the M5 Motorway, Junction 22, less than 10 miles away, the more adventurous have the rest of the west Country at their finger tips.

If hiking, cycling, site seeing, or simply relaxing in beautiful surroundings is what you're looking for, then please come & stay with us at Poplar Farm.

Other Activities: Clay Pigeon Shooting

Golf: Isle of Wedmore Golf Club is one of Somerset’s friendliest clubs, a warm welcome is always extended to our members and visitors including societies and corporate visitors. The Isle of Wedmore Golf Club was founded in 1992 and is located just 2 miles from Poplar Farm.

Our location benefits from breathtaking panoramic views of the Mendip Hills, Cheddar Valley, Glastonbury Tor and the Somerset Levels. Our parkland course has been carefully designed to maintain and enhance the natural environment offering 18 holes (par 70) of over 6000 yards in 2 nine hole loops. Both these loops start and finish at our excellent and newly extended Clubhouse which offers a wide range of delicious snacks, meals and beverages. It provides a challenge for the experienced golfer but at the same time is gentle enough for the less skilful player.
