About Michael Reid

Originally from Hertfordshire Michael moved to France in 1994 and married Danielle. They moved to Pas De Calais, from the Paris region in 1995. The plan was stay for 6 months. Over 20 years later they’re still here and loving it!

Michael Reid purchased this house in 2005

Why Michael Reid chose Pas-de-Calais

We discovered the village of Tingry in 1997 and bought an old apple orchard at the entrance of the village. In 2004 we built Les Tilleuls in it from scratch. Our very own purpose built family holiday home! We wanted to create something that we’d want to stay in when we went away. It needed to be big enough to take all the family, very comfortable with quality furnishings. We “opened for business” in 2005 and were awarded 3 star accommodation ratings from Gites de France and the French Tourist board.

It does what it says on the tin. It’s built for holidays and getting everyone together in one place.

What makes this house unique

Great location, close to historical towns, glorious beaches and wonderful forests. Yet a peaceful rural setting. The house is fully independent with huge lawn gardens. There’s no one going to disturb you if you want a relaxing day in the garden and no one to disturb if you want a late night BBQ party!

You feel remote, but actually you’re very close to “civilization”. There are a whole host of visits, activities and attractions to enjoy whilst you’re here. There's enough to keep the entire family occupied, something for all ages and tastes. If you run out of ideas we’re on hand to help……..

Our daughters loved the region as toddlers and children. Now they’re enjoying it as teenagers, and some as young adults………….will they ever leave!

Truly real France and real close if you’re arriving from UK. Under an hour’s drive from Eurotunnel or the ports and you’re here.... on holiday.

A varied week in the Pas de Calais

  • 5 of 5

Les Tilleuls perfectly matched its description. It was well equipped and well maintained with a lovely garden. It is a short drive from Boulogne where we were able to stock up with French delicacies at the Auchan hypermarket. Boulogne Centre Ville is a typical seaside port - not worth a visit, but the fortified town is nice and has a little cobbled street, lined with small restaurants.

Les Tilleils offered all of us opportunities for a good holiday. Despite dull weather my grandchildren enjoyed the local beaches at le Touquet and Hardelot. Nausicaa is probably not as good as Oceanopolis at Brest but fine on a wet day.My youngest son and his girlfriend enjoyed an overnight trip to Paris by catching the train at Boulogne, while my husband and I managed to visit all of the towns in Nord Pas de Calais ... and slightly beyond! We visited Arras with its restored squares,Amiens with its beautiful cathedral and its canals,le Touquet, St Omer - a pleasant small town - and Lille which we especially liked. We had lunch in the main square and coffee in Meert, which has been there since C18th.Lille also has some nice shops.

Other trips that we enjoyed were to the Cistercian Abbey at Valloires which we were shown round by a young French guide. It was challenging trying to follow so much detail in french but satisfying to pick up some of it.There is a beautiful garden with a small shop and restaurant.

La Coupole is also very interesting. The approach tunnels are always very cold which adds to the atmosphere but would make a sweater essential on a hot day.The information is well presented and the head phones deal with the language problem. This is not really a visit for children much younger than 10 or 11. There is a little cafeteria at the entrance and as the visit lasts 2/3 hours, it's sensible to have a drink at the start.Their sandwiches also provided a satisfactory lunch at the end.

We all enjoyed our week at les Tilleuls and it was a relaxing place to return to in the evenings and catch up on what everyone had been doing.

Owner's Response: The Pas de Calais truly is « real France – real close ». So easy to get to and so much to see and do. Sure there are no guarantees on the weather but that goes with being « real close ». The upside is that guests staying at Les Tilleuls tend to be more adventurous with their excursions when the sun’s not shinning, taking home more memories of « real France ». The Les Tilleuls as Marjory found out is large enough and comfortable enough for all the family and for all ages. In renting Les Tilleuls you’ll enjoy a quality holiday home and a perfect base for exploring the region.

Spacious, clean, extremely friendly welcoming!

  • 5 of 5

Exactly what we expected for a large family (9 adults, 2 children, 3 dogs!). The house was perfectly sized, we could relax and stay together in the living area. Great extra point: the wellness & beauty center just next door, owned by the owners. The treatment that I offered myself was really good: organic products, nice little place, comfort, and very skilled esthetician! I'd love to go back. Stéphanie

Vakantiehuis voorzien van alle comfort

  • 4 of 5

Gezellig!

Three generations with one view - terrific!

  • 5 of 5

We received a very warm welcome from owner Michael who met us at the door and provided us with all the relevant information we needed.

The gîte was everything we had anticipated it to be from the description and photos that we had seen. It was extremely clean, modern, spacious, warm and inviting. The lengthy table was ideal for our family. It was reminiscent of the tables we have seen in other gîtes and in the homes of French families that we know. This link with the traditional whilst being very modern worked extremely well. I laid claim to the rocking chair as soon as I laid eyes on it! The wood pellet burning stove provided lots of heat but without any smell. It was particularly welcome on chilly, late-October mornings. The garden is very large but the highlight for us was the boules pitch, the scene of fierce encounters between the generations!

Not one member of the family complained about the beds and bedrooms, nor the two showers and bathroom. We all greatly appreciated the provision of wi-fi which handled our demands pretty well. The kitchen was compact and provided all the implements and utensils needed for cooking family-sized meals. Speaking of meals, a visit to Le Clos des Trois Tonneaux in Samer is definitely to be recommended. Also in Samer, less than 1½ miles away, are excellent boulangeries, boucheries/charcuteries, a marché and an ample number of cafés. There is an Intermarché supermarket in Samer but we preferred the Carrefour which was about 15 minutes away in Nesles.

Without doing too much driving there are umpteen beaches within easy reach, our favourites being Le Touquet and Hardelot. In recent years Hardelot has seen a great deal of work on improving the whole town and promenade. We have been calling in there on our way to various places for about 12 years and the difference is remarkable. Some good restaurants, cafés and fast food establishments cater for just about anybody's taste. Also within easy reach are Boulogne (chateau worth visiting), Montreuil-sur-Mer (great ramparts and medieval town) and St. Omer where the nearby La Coupole is a must for anyone with even the remotest interest in the World Wars of the 20th Century.

All-in-all we would recommend this gîte to anyone, particularly those who don't want to travel too far after reaching France yet are prepared to explore the area as there are wonderful places to be found that cater for all ages.

Family Stay With Two Small Dogs

  • 5 of 5

A modern, well presented property with everything you need. Attentive and friendly owners next door a distinct advantage. Loved the area with quick access to the coast and dog-friendly beaches.

For those with dogs, please note that the garden is not secure, so bring a stake and tie-out cables. No local off-the-lead walks but recommend the beaches and a lake at Desvres where they can run free.

Overall, highly recommended.

Set in the Boulonais region of Pas de Calais, between the Opale coast and a vast expanse of Natural Park Lands. A wonderful selection of sandy beaches, such Hardelot, Le Touquet, Ste Cecile. The house is half way between the historical fortified towns of Montreuil & Boulogne sur Mer. This truly is real France, real close to the British shores. Only 45 minutes drive from the tunnel or ferry ports.

Golf: Golf on the Opal Coast at Hardelot - LeTouquet - Nampont-Saint-Martin - Belle Dune -Wimereux - Aa Saint-Omer - Dunkerque - Abbeville - Arras

With its 11 eighteen-hole and 3 nine-hole golf

courses, the Opal Coast offers golfers a wide range of quality courses, both along its coastline and inland.

The quality and attractiveness of its golf courses are well known to all, up to the very highest level.

International competitions have been held here for many years.

In 1990, the 9 golf clubs decided to work together to promote the Opal Coast as a golfing destination.

From this union was born a strong motivation to make this coastline in the North of France a major centre for European golf and to improve constantly the quality of the courses and of the services on offer.
