1 bedroom cottage with period features but all modern facilities
About Michelle Harrison
I got to know Sandwich as a holiday destination when I was younger. In 2002 after my first daughter was born I decided that it was the best place in the world to raise my children and moved here. I just love the fact that all we need is within walking distance but that we live in a small enough town that we can simply walk or cycle into countryside or along the coast in a few minutes. The people here are friendlier than other places we have lived. Here, you would never walk past somebody without saying hello. I now have two holiday cottages: Stour Cottage in Sandwich and the GateHouse in Dover. I run them as Michelle's Cottages.
Michelle Harrison purchased this Cottage in 2002
Why Michelle Harrison chose Sandwich
Sandwich is like stepping back in time. Not only are there narrow streets of medieval buildings but the people seem to have more time and are relaxed and friendly - you can't walk past somebody without saying hello. I just love the fact that everything I need from a supermarket, to pubs, restaurant and cinema are within easy walking distance. But the town is small enough that I can easily walk or cycle out into the surrounding countryside. I've always wanted to live near the coast and spend as much time as I can walking on the beach.
What makes this Cottage unique
Stour Cottage has the best of both worlds - it is a modern built property with all the insulation, double glazing, central heating that you would expect. However because it is within the Sandwich conservation area it needs to fit in with all the other medieval buildings and hence has all the charm and character of an older cottage. I just love the exposed beams and the courtyard garden. The fact that it also has a garage is a great benefit. Where else can you stay close to world class golf courses, stunning beaches and so many places of historical interest you won't know where to start! The countryside is stunning with fantastic walking and cycling routes too.

Very comfortable and well equipped
Lovely little cottage, well situated for lovely walks with dog. Well equipped for a relaxing stay. Was able to sit in courtyard one evening with a bottle of wine but the other nights it rained. Garage was a bit of a tight fit even with small car, but sadly no where else to park as the cars on street did not move for the whole 4 days so this was a bit of an operation with dog and rain!
Loved the area, would probably want to explore more places that dogs were not allowed in such as the castles.
I'm so pleased you liked the cottage so much, the location is great isn't it, so close to town yet quietly tucked away.
Regarding the parking, I'm really surprised to hear this as most of the residents in the square work so most cars usually move daily. The garage is a standard single so I know some large cars and vans won't fit but I have had several guests who have parked their car in the garage for the duration of their stay and used the local buses and trains because it's so easy. I hope it didn't detract from your stay.
I do hope you'll come and stay again, as you said, there is so much to explore!
A lovely house in a stunning setting ,add in the glorious weather and the holiday couldn't be better
A lovely house for a couple ample space, Sandwich as a location can't be beaten lots to see, places to eat and several lovely pubs
With 3 World Class golf courses right on the doorstep, Sandwich really is a golfers heaven. Royal St. Georges, Princes and Cinque Ports regularly host championship competitions, though are still open to the public for playing or spectating. Stour Cottage is within walking distance of Royal St. Georges so is the perfect base during tournaments.
The east Kent coast is a stunning coastline with glorious beaches aplenty as well as fabulous coastline walks. As Stour Cottage is pet friendly, it really is the perfect destination for walking holidays to bring your dog. There is even a riverside walk around the town just a few moments stroll from the front door which is perfect for dog walkers as it's completely away from the road.
Sandwich itself is known as the most complete medieval town in the country. With it's overhanging half timbered houses, narrow winding streets and beautiful quay, it's like taking a step back in time. Sandwich hosts many festivals throughout the year including Sandwich Salutes the 40's, Medieval Mayhem, Sandwich Beer and Ale Festival, Sandwich Folk Festival, Sandwich Arts Festival but to name a few. The town really does come alive on these occasions and is completely over taken with stalls, parades, music, dancing and themed events throughout the town.
For history enthusiasts, there are 3 castles very close by: Deal, Walmer and Dover. All offering something different to the visitor. Dover in particular hosts many events year round from jousting to World War II events with re-enactments of battles and costumed actors.
