|Minimum Stay||4 - 5 nights|
If you enjoy the quiet beauty of a rural setting, the Historic UX Ranch is a convenient home base for exploring the entire Black Hills, Badlands, Lakota Country, Sturgis and Deadwood areas. We are centrally located in the beautiful Battle Creek Valley on the eastern edge of the Black Hills.
Our newly converted Bunk house is approximately 1500 square feet with four large bedrooms with queen-size beds, full kitchen, dining area, living room and His and Hers bathrooms with four showers. There is plenty of room in the wide hallway if your group needs extra tables or you have people who would like to bring their own air mattresses.
The panoramic view to the west overlooks our horse pasture where deer and wild turkeys are common visitors. Most nights you can hear a distant coyote howl.The Black Hills are beautiful just up the valley. The view to the east is our hayfield and on toward the Badlands only 10 miles down the road.
The Bunk house was originally an extra barn we used beside the granary but now has a new life as a very comfortable rustic home away from home. The curve of the granary can still be seen in one corner of the entry. We will continue the work on the landscaping, porches and garden area this season and you will see this fact reflected in our reasonable rates.
Horses are welcome. We have a covered barn or open corrals for them at a nominal fee. If you have a telescope, bring it, or if you just love a big sky full of stars, come to the UX Ranch and enjoy the view! The meadowlarks are singing. Hope to see you soon!

We gathered three generations together and stayed a long weekend in the bunkhouse. Huge space, lots of room to spread out, private, comfortable and relaxing. We brought extra blankets - totally not necessary, had more than plenty in extra closet. Peaceful and relaxing vibe in the bunkhouse - all enjoyed! 4 bedrooms, more than plenty of beds for our group. Close to Mount Rushmore and other attractions. Grocery store within a short drive.
Thanks for using your bunk house. It had rained before we got there and during our stay. Some of the doors were hard to close because of the rain. However, we trusted no one would walk in on us. Our 2 yr old and 6 yr old were delighted with the cowboy hats and the saddles to pretend they were real cowboys even had jail house keys. We even had to buy a cowboy hat for the 2 yr old. The Adults enjoyed the huge comfortable space. We did not need the air conditioner, but did enjoy the laundry room and clean clothes. It was amazingly close to Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore to enjoy night programs. It was also nice to have home cooked breakfasts and you can see Mt. Rushmore from just outside the back door. We also played some miniature golf in Rapid City. The rabbits and other small wildlife may be seen out the windows. It was a nice time to visit with family and friends.
We stayed at the bunkhouse with our two adult children's families. There is plenty of room to spread out inside, and a big back yard to play in. We enjoyed the views of the Black Hills and watching the storms roll towards and over us. The bunkhouse is within driving distance to many family friendly attractions.
The only thing I would caution guests is to the fact that the bedrooms' ceilings are open, so you can hear everything. We found this out the hard way with a fussy grand baby. So, if you have little, little ones, this may not be the place for you... But, once they grow up a little, we are definitely reserving the bunkhouse again!!
Wow. We knew this place would be special; it is truly unique. It is within sight of the Black Hills (you actually can see Mt. Rushmore with strong binoculars from the back "yard") and really just a few miles off the main roads to all major sites- from Hot Springs to Custer- and yet so isolated that one really feels away from all the tourism in the area. We got here after a week camping and were thankful to spend some stormy nights in this SPACIOUS, original space. We were 7 (3 adults and 4 kids) and had enough room to literally gallop down the main corridor. Beds were comfy, rooms large, and the decor truly authentic western, with lots of family ranch/ horse/ Native American memorabilia. The bathrooms are separated into guys/ gals and within each are 2 shower stalls, 2 sinks and 2 toilet stalls. It was like using a camp bathroom but within a beautiful home! We loved the quiet and absolute peace of the area around the bunkhouse, as well as the careful attention of the owner. We would love to return one day!! Note: for those needing absolute privacy, the walls in each bedroom stop about 1-2 feet before the ceiling so loud conversations can be heard from one room to another. We had no issues with this and found the kids couldn't hear us talking if we hung out in the main living room/ kitchen area.
This property far exceeded my expectations. Our group consisted of 6 adults and 8 children. The children loved the backyard. They had plenty of room to stretch,run and play after a long day of exploring all the sights in South Dakota. I have to admit even the adults enjoyed relaxing in the backyard and watching the sunset at the end of the day. There was also plenty of room on the inside of this beautifully decorated bunkhouse. Attention has been paid to the details of the decorating and although this bunkhouse is very large inside, it feels warm and cozy, very inviting. A huge bonus since we had a total of 14 people to get ready in the morning and out the door for our sight seeing schedule was the 4 showers, 4 toilets and 4 sinks. This property is conveniently located in the middle of all the major sights to see in South Dakota. Although we were on a sight seeing adventure everyday, I know that the kids would have been just as happy to play at the ranch all day long. I feel like we built so many memories on this trip for our little ones (all cousins) who have not been together since their grandma passed away a year ago. This was also their first trip with their grandpa. This is truly a beautiful, wonderful place to stay. My 4 year old keeps asking when we can go back. Thank you, Thank you for opening your home to us and others so they may have a wonderful vacation filled with many happy memories.
We met here for a family reunion. Some of us from Idaho, some from Washington, some from Maryland and some from Colorado. What an excellent time we had! The best water balloon fight ever! Because of scheduling conflicts, we had the opportunity to stay in both bunkhouses and both were excellent! Clean, tidy and well maintained. We only left the ranch on one day to go to Evan's Plunge. The rest of the time we just hung out. We had everything we needed and tons of space if we needed a moment for quiet alone time. Thank you for everything!
