Our gîte is the perfect setting in which to relax and share in the joy of life . Sylvie, Mark and their children will welcome you to an extremely cosy residence, totally renovated in 2007 to give you a maximum amount of comfort with many on-site facilities. The gîte is ideally located to tour the region, only 10 miles away from Saumur. The visit of the royal abbey is a must where you can discover the effigies of some of the Plantagenêt kings and queens. Although you are in the heart of the village, you will feel totally secluded as our garden is 2000m2. You will be sitting by the pond, listening to the frogs in the spring and summer or indulging in swimming in our heated sunken Sydney Sunbay 7 x 5m swimming pool. On colder days, you can snuggle in front of the fireplace! We are fluent in English, French and German. Sylvie runs a language school teaching French to local residents and Francophiles from all over the world. Landscaped garden with enclosed privacy garden
Changeover day: Changeover is usually Saturday. Arrival time from 2pm and departure time no later than 10am.
However, this is negotiable depending upon availability
Touristic sites privileged discovery: Sylvie has provided you with a lot of brochures in the gîte describing all the nearby places of interest and extra ones further afield.
Sylvie can organise cookery courses with the local gastronomic restaurant and wine-tasting sessions with local partners. She can also take you to the local craftsmen who love disclosing the secrets of their savoir-faire.
Catering service, à la Carte French tuition, cooking classes:
The gastronomic restaurant opposite the gite offers a catering service. I run cookery workshops for our gite guests with the restaurant chef. You can combine an idle stay with an unforgettable activity!
You can also make the most of your stay to join a few French classes. It would be so much more interesting for you if you could communicate better with the people around you.
This is a unique opportunity of combining the learning of French with an exciting area of interest : gastronomy, wine, cultural heritage.
Treat yourself to an hour of French a day . Contact Sylvie for availability and prices
My name's Sylvie, I'm a French native who lived with my English husband Mark in England for 6 years before we bought this property in Fontevraud in 1992 , part of which was renovated as the gîte in 2007. We have two grown-up children : Annabelle and Samuel who live in Saumur and Angers.
"After working for 18 years, as Head of the Language Center at the Saumur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, I wanted to become self-employed in the privileged setting of our exceptional village and developed a language and gîte business"
"With the renovation works carried out on the outbuildings in 2007, Mark and I wanted you to enjoy all the traditional architectural style of the region : wooden beams,, tufa stone thick walls ( keeping you cool in summer), a slate roof, whilst being able to enjoy all the modern amenities, including a wood pellet stove for extra cosiness, coming on top of the central heating. "
Of course we can only welcome one family at a time, so you have the privileged use of the property and the pool.

Fontevraud L'Abbaye is an exceptional historical village in the heart of the western part of the Loire Valley and the quality of life here is spectacular
Enjoying the peacefulness of our landscaped garden listening to the humming of the birds and watching the frogs and the waterlilies in our ponds, whilst having access to restaurants and services in the village, 200m down the road ,to an amazing history with lots of touristic sites within 10 miles, being able to indulge in the French Art de Vivre with tons of independent wine growers, the famous sparkling wine merchants in and around Saumur, and also being able to take part in local events throughout the year.
Comments from Sue (Finchley)
'We were delighted to find this cool, calm oasis located just behind the main street of Fontevraud so close to the Abbey. The gite is beautifully decorated, comfortable and equipped with everything you could need, and we enjoyed sitting under the trees or beside the pool in the lovely garden. There is plenty to do and see in the immediate area - apart from visiting the splendid Abbey, I hired a bike and explored the surrounding villages and countryside and the banks of the Loire, whilst my husband played golf at the nearby 18 hole course. Slightly further afield, there are vineyards, chateaux and troglodyte caves to visit.
Sylvie and Mark are charming hosts, helpful and informative. I would happily recommend La Samsonelle to a couple or a small family, and hope to return some day.'
There was a roaring wood fire waiting for us when we arrived on a chilly day. The accommodation is well presented, quiet and very comfortable and Sylvie and Mark were welcoming and easy to get along with. We spent a week there on a cycling holiday and Fontevraud made an excellent base.
A most relaxing and enjoyable holiday was had by the whole family at 'La Samsonelle'. The 4 of us (2 adults and 2 teenage children) enjoyed the great facilities at the gite and it felt a like real home from home. The well tended garden was particularly excellent and the children loved the pool and watching all the wildlife in the pond. The owners Sylvie and Mark were very helpful and were there if we needed them but not at all intrusive. The pretty but quiet village of Fontevraud had all the facilities needed such as a bakers, convenience store, bars, restaurants, pizzeria, children's playground etc.. The surrounding area is beautiful with a wide variety of things to do. We particularly enjoyed the Bioparc Zoo in Doue La Fontaine (25 min drive). The zoo is an old quarry and is designed in such a way that you feel extremely close to the animals. We also found a Chateau called Chateau L'Islette near Azay La Rideau (50 min drive). It is amazingly pretty and is privately owned so is not in most of the guidebooks and therefore much quieter. The children particularly enjoyed rowing on the lake at the Chateau. Another impressive Chateau is Breze (10 min drive) because of it's unusual underground living areas. We also enjoyed Chinon (25 min drive) which had several restaurants around a central square and was a good place to sit, relax and eat on a pleasant summers evening. We have been to several areas of France but the Loire has by far been the best and we have no hesitation in recommending the gite La Samsonelle.
We stayed for two weeks at the beginning of July. The property was ideal for our family of five. The house is perfect as a home from home, lots to do in the surrounding area many places of interest within a short drive. If you choose to stay "at home" for the day the garden and pool are wonderful and peaceful and you are only a very short walk from the bakery, restaurants and ice creams!! A good selection of restaurants in the village - La Licorne was most enjoyable, excellent hospitality in a beautiful setting. We also ate at the Croix Blanche, Fontevraud Abbey and has a couple of takeouts from the pizza place, which we ate by the pool. This was our eighth trip to France and by far our most favourite destination, both for the property but also the Loire Valley which is so beautiful. Oh and the local wine is fab too!!
A home from home in a beautiful village, La Samsonelle is a comfortable base from which to explore the Loire Valley.
The gite is very well appointed with tasteful and comfortable furnishings and decor and a beautiful sunny garden with pool. We stayed for a week in Fontevraud L'Abbaye and found plenty to do and visit in Fontevraud itself and the surrounding area.
Ours was a pilgrimage to visit the last resting place of the Plantagenet kings and the Abbey did not disappoint. An annual pass costing just 12 euros gave us unlimited access to the interesting and tranquil Abbey.
In the village there are lots of places to eat and all of the places we tried, we would visit again.
Sylvie, owner, was very welcoming and accommodating. I would heartily recommend La Samsonelle for your holiday.
Our family had all same opinion from our holiday with Sylvie and Mark - absolutely great! Thanks to you one more time from your hospitality, it was great to be your quest during this time. Your apartement was much more than we dare to wish. With rented car was easy to visit in surroundings, there is lot to see.
After our vacation we show all the photos to our relatives from our trip. We also advertise this place to other finns. Thanks one more time.
Marko & family
