'Porth' meaning beach and 'Towan' meaning dunes, the name gives you a pretty good idea of this seaside village, nestled in a stunning natural valley. The huge sandy beach at Porthtowan is perfect for sea, sand, surf, sandcastles and sunbathing (as long as the weather plays ball!) It's easy to see why it's been a popular destination since the Victorians discovered it back in the 19th century. Today, the beach has coveted blue flag status, an independent recognition of its environmental excellence as one of the cleanest in the world. Whether you're looking for an active break with surf lessons and adrenaline (try Porthtowan Surf School), or a more relaxing seaside family holiday, Porthtowan is a great place to stay. Our beachside apartments offer the chance to be on the beach in just a few steps after breakfast! The beach offers a host of activities, from sandcastle building to surfing and swimming. September and October see the beach host some of the UK's best surf competitions, including the British Bodyboarding Championships. If you love wild swimming then don't miss the chance of an exhilarating dip in the tidal pool which the Guardian’s wild swimmer Kate Rew described as looking ‘...like a place where mermaids would swim’. Porthtowan is great for ramblers and lovers of England's wild countryside. The valley and the waves are stunning viewed from a vantage point on top of one of the surrounding hills, where moorlands, wildlife and abandoned minehouses are waiting to be explored. At the end of the day enjoy beautiful sunsets from the outdoor terrace of the Blue Bar, Porthtowan's apres-surf beachside brasserie serving locally sourced food and quality drinks in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy weekend music nights, quiz nights and events throughout the year. Porthtowan Beach Info • Blue Flag beach with facilities that include toilets, car parking, children’s play park and Blue Bar beach side café. • The beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during busy periods. • A seasonal dog ban applies on this beach from Easter to end September. • From the beach at low tide you can walk to the neighbouring and equally stunning beach at Chapel Porth. • Porthtowan has access to South West coast paths in both directions for walking and exploring this beautiful part of Cornwall. Transport Links • Truro and Newquay are only approx 10/15 miles away • Local buses run from the village out towards St Agnes, Truro and Redruth • Nearest airport is Newquay • Nearest train stations are located in Redruth and Truro
