Farr House has been my family's home for 150 years. My grandparents lived in the house until the early 200s, and my four sisters and I would visit them there as much as we could. We all have fond memories of swimming in the loch during the summer, fishing from the rowing boat, going on adventures through the forests, and having picnics on the hillside The landscape around Farr is incredibly atmospheric, with ancient woodland all around, expansive moorland above, and huge glacial boulders scattered across the fields. Some Iron Age bowls lie just behind the house, and there are even some standing stones nearby. The wildlife is also impressive: look out for herds of reed deer and sika, see grouse all over the hillside, hear stags roaring in the autumn, and, if you're lucky, you might see an osprey catch a trout in the loch. My family and I have always loved this special place, and we truly hope you will too.
Why Betsy chose Inverness
My grandparents originally lived in the Georgian built Farr House, but were forced to pull it down in the 1970s due to dry rot. However, they converted the chapel and tenant's hall into a home, and it is these two buildings which formed the new Farr House. Recently, we decided to completely renovate and update this property in order to open it up for holiday lets. It has been a fascinating experience, and we have discovered all sorts of things - including the outline of a badminton court and lost shuttlecocks under the floorboards of what is now the sitting room! We have tried to keep the original look of the property, though have re-built one end in order to re-orientate the house and incorporate modern features. We used as many of the house’s original materials as possible in it’s modelling. Local people still remember dancing in the tenant's hall at village ceilidhs, and the chapel, now the library, retains it's original wooden wall panelling and circular stained glass window.
