Greece as it used to be
Photos do not do justice to this place! In reality it is an oasis of peace and exclusive beauty in the hills overlooking bay and village of Karystos. We were extremely lucky to meet the owners of this place, Pavlos and Marianne who did an extra effort to explain the history of the place and the amazing restauration project of the estate since they bought it in 1986. For anyone seeking peace, atmosphere of old Greek riviera, this place is indispensable choice. In a very few places, you can lodge and relax exactly at the major archeological site, place that hosted rulers of the Evia island and even Kings of Greece. This is one of the places where one knows that he/she needs to return.
We are really happy you had such an amazing time with us and you understood the importance and the beauty of this place. We are grateful for every word you said. It means a lot to us, therefore we thank you and we truly hope to see you again soon.
Lovely location - lovely people!
The estate's villas are an excellent setting for a peaceful holiday in Karystos. They have excellent views in a historic and interesting setting. Maria, the Estate Manager, is superb - very friendly and very helpful. The Owners were also very friendly but they are only around some weekend.
Although the area can get quite windy (it did while we were there!), thanks to the terracing there is always a sheltered area to relax including by the pool.
In terms of restaurants in Karystos, we enjoyed Geusiplous and the restaurant in Hotel Karystion (excellent gooey Chocolate dessert) best but we ate in many other places and did not have a bad meal. Restaurant portions are quite large so consider saving some for the stray cat and dog population who are friendly and seem cared for by many locals too. The info pack in each Villa has all contact details you will need.
Warning if you intend to drive from Athens then it may be much easier is get the ferry. We arrived late at night in Athens and drove (the ferries do not operate late in the evening) - consequently we arrived over 3 hours later tired and exhausted at 01:30. Better to consider staying the evening in Athens and getting the Rafina to Marmari ferry - it only takes an hour and Marmari is a straight forward 20 mins drive to Montofolio.
If you are planing to holiday in Karystos then I would say that you won't find anywhere better to stay than one of the Montofolio Wine estate villas.
Thank you very much for taking the time to review your stay and for your good words! It's always nice to know that a guest enjoyed their stay with us. The tips are also very helpful for our future guests, thank you! Many greetings from all of us.
Excellent - superb!
The first week of August 2016 we stayed with two adults and three teenage girls in Belvedere. The house is great - ac throughout which was lovely as it was just under 40C. Washingmachine / dishwasher/ tv all in good working order. The estate is beautiful and we were given a guided tour through the Vineyard and ended up tasting the very special dessert wine. Danae and her husband Constatntino are very helpful and give interesting tips for exploring the area. The pool is wonderful. There are plenty of secluded beaches nearby - all of the beaten track do not expect mass tourism here!!!
We recommend this estate highly!
We had a miraculous week in the Montofoli Estate. The house Belvedere is furnished very well and equipped, everything is affectionate and is made careful. Danae and Constantino are excellent hosts and are available really always with advice & action. They have a vast amount tips which have still given an understanding of the wonderful area with their great and small attractions to us. Pool & garden and all undeveloped outskirt areas are extremely nice and maintained very well. One has a wonderful view avon of the patio on the sea. Children are with all what belongs to them, pretty welcome. A total of one great reference for the families which would like to spend a special and authentic vacation.
A very special place
This place is special. So special that when our week's booking was finished, we stayed on and cancelled other arrangements for the rest of our holiday.
The accommodation is clean, simple and basic, it is not a manicured designer villa. It is on a working wine farm, parts of which date back to 400BC - and they have the stones to prove it. This means it is a fascinating place to explore.
The owners are fabulous. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they did all they could to make our stay a success. Even the farm dog went out of her way to make us welcome.
The local town is quiet (in early September) with some great tavernas. And the nearby beaches are large and empty.
This was the best holiday we have had for a long time.
Thank you so much, we enjoyed having you here! Hope to see you again soon!
A SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA
KARYSTOS is an ancient port in the south tip of the island of EVIA, and due to its proximity to Athens and its particular morphology, it served as one of the most important ports of the time.
In its recent history, it has been the leading producer of a famous type of slate, the ‘Karystian Plaka,’ which has travelled the world to be used in state-of-the-art constructions of great importance and aesthetic value.
Today, Karystos is a popular destination for visitors, who, at a very short distance from Athens, enjoy the beauty and unique natural atmosphere of a GREEK ISLAND with over 300 days of sunshine a year.
The town of Karystos, which is at a 20 minutes walking distance from the Montofoli Estate, is extremely lively throughout the year and offers a variety of opportunities for leisure: excellent GREEK FOOD in the local TAVERNAS, sophisticated modern cuisine in posh, elegant, new-style restaurants, numerous cosy cafes with local delicacies, ‘informed’ bars and nightclubs, etc., in its extensive, dazzling coastline.
Due to its long history, Karystos presents a rich ARCHAEOLOGICAL interest. The Montofoli Estate is itself a renowned archaeological site, where ancient findings are displayed on site. A guided tour at the Arhaeological Museum of Karystos, reveals much of the incredible past of the area that leaves visitors in awe.
Another aspect that sets the area apart, is its magnificent natural environment:
Along the coast, endless sandy BEACHES with crystal-clear waters are a favourite everyday summer destination. Over 30 beaches offer a wide choice between organized settings with various water sports or others with complete privacy.
Picturesque, unspoiled VILLAGES surrounding the town of Karystos, high on the mountain, offer unlimited ground for exploration. The area has also been mapped into short or longer WALKING TRAILS of immense natural beauty.
A typical attraction of the greater area of Karystos are the mysterious DRAKOSPITA (‘dragon houses’ in its literal sense) because their very construction with enormous pieces of stone, at a time with limited technological means, remains a mystery yet today.
One of the most beautiful gorges in Greece, the Dimosaris GORGE that ends on a beach, can be descended in 4,5 hours and is one of the best choices for an all-day excursion and pic nic.
Other typical activities in the area include scuba diving, traditional yoga, hiking and mountain biking.
Guests at the Montofoli Estate Villas receive a COMPLETE GUIDE for the area with suggested activities and popular attractions, that are certain to make their stay delightful and unforgettable.
Last but not least, Karystos has its own HOSPITAL and there is always a pharmacy on duty 24 hours a day.
