The Soane et Loire department of Burgundy has many special attractions for visitors. The countryside is beautiful: green and lush with rolling hills, spectacular views, hidden valleys and countless pretty villages, norman churches, grand chateaux and local manor houses. The immediate country is farming land, full of gentle Charolais cows, though the general area is renown for it's wines. Only a short drive from the house are many famous vineyards, and wine tasting opportunities. There are many chateaux based in wine producing villages, some dating to the 10th century with impressive fortifications, surrounded by charming ancient stone houses, all testament to Burgundy's historic wealth. These are the places to go for tasting individual wines. Cluny is a fascinating ancient town deserving many visits. The carefully maintained remains of the Abbey are spectacular and show just how powerful it was throughout Europe. Cluny is also the home to the Napoleonic stables with their famous percheron, arab and other champion breeds, with many equestrian events through the summer months. Eating, drinking, food, markets, brochettes, concerts and events, walking and exploring are just some of the many activities that makes this a richly entertaining and interesting part of France.
