Stretching away as far, as the eye can see, a vast surreal expanse of fine sandy beach, washed by the exceptionally clean, clear local waters of the Mediterranean. This is El Playazo, the grand beach of the Almanzora, that stretches a total of 7 Km. down from the mouth of the Rio Almanzora, and Boca del Rio Beach in Villaricos, as far as harbor town of Garrucha, famous throughout Spain for its giant succulent red prawns or “Gambone's”.
To the south are views across the sparkling waters of the Golfo de Vera, as far as the Moorish and somewhat bohemian hilltop village of Mojacar, all backed by the beachside development of Vera. But to the north is an all but deserted series of beaches, backed by trees in the most enviable of locations, all along the coast to Villaricos.
The year-round, dry warm climate, the clear light of the Almanzora, the clean sea air combine to offer an outdoor life and holiday style unparalleled in Europe; there are no noisy crowds here, only space to relax and soak up the sun. Real unspoiled beachside living is the essence of Playa Marques, with stunning views from the terraces of the surrounding sea and mountains.
Playa Marques is just 5 minutes drive from Villaricos and Garrucha with their exceptional seafood restaurants and only a short distance from the small town of Vera inland, where you’ll find plenty of fine shops and a tremendous bustling Saturday market that has to be experienced to be believed. Water sports are available in Villaricos and Garrucha.
For sophisticates, the buzzy beach bars and nightlife of Mojacar Beach is just ten minutes along the coast, but nevertheless at a safe distance for the rest of us, who just want to amble down to one of the local ramshackle chiringuitos that dot the beach out front, grab a long slow cooler and then just laze back in the sun.
Welcome to Almería Province
Boasting silent mountain valleys, sublime beaches and vast tracts of semi-desert scrubland, Almería province is an area of haunting natural beauty. Despite this, and despite enjoying 3000 hours of annual sunshine, it remains relatively unknown outside of Spain. Its obvious drawcard is its glorious coastline, most notably the thrilling beaches of the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata-Níjar, and the lively, good-time resort of Mojácar. But venture inland, and you'll discover plenty to explore in its sparsely populated and often other-worldly hinterland. Tour the spaghetti-western badlands of the Desierto de Tabernas and discover underground treasures in the Sorbas caves. Further north, the wooded peaks of Los Vélez provide a majestic backdrop for mountain walking. After so much nature, the port city of Almería offers a welcome blast of urban energy with its impressive monuments, handsome centre and buzzing tapas bars.
