Pescaglia House Rental Photos and Description

1 hour Pisa airport. -1 mile to village with restaurant and shops. 20 mins Lucca

San Giuseppe is semi-detached, (it was originally a farmhouse) the other half is also a private holiday home, not let. We have separate drives, gardens and entrances. The house walls are stone and very thick: keeps cool even on hottest days. There are two terraces and a large flat garden, private pool, privacy-fenced and gated - very secure for children. Parents can relax because of the above-ground swimming pool, out of bounds when you want it to be. The views are across and along the wooded valley, adjoining the Garfagnana National Park. The property is not over-looked by any others and is completely private: peaceful and romantic. Because it is not near a city the night sky is amazing. Watch the fire-flies dance across the garden!

The key feature of the property is the outstanding natural beauty surrounding it and the large, private gardens to relax and play. It is secluded but not too remote, there are houses dotted all around the hillside, and a blacksmith further along the lane

Famous blacksmith: Just 100 meters along the lane beyond our house is a famous blacksmith.

Carlo Galgani, last member of a long line of blacksmiths of Lucca, forges steel by hand with the help of the mighty 'hammer', moved by the cascading water, properly channeled from the nearby stream Pedogna. Water also powers the generator for lighting and other machinery. The rush of air caused by cascading water is used as bellows for the furnace.

He is one of only two traditional blacksmiths using water power remaining in Italy.

He normally works on week day mornings and welcomes visitors. He sells his high quality knives, kitchen and garden tools, etc. (He is more interested in demonstrating than selling things).

Type his name into Google to see videos on You Tube.

Fun way to see Lucca: Bicycles are for hire at the Porta S. Maria gate in Lucca. You can safely ride around the walls, no cars allowed, and get great views of the town. They also have family 'bikes' for 3 or 4 and adult bikes with attached kiddy-bike behind.

It takes around 35 minutes at a leisurely pace. Cost for a family 'bike' and adult bike with trailor 18 euros (1 hour).

Guestbook comments from the owner

The property offers tranquility for those seeking rest and relaxation. There is a large garden and a lovely fresh spring water pool which our children enjoyed immensely. The villa provides a combination of rustic charm with excellent facilities including a modern kitchen and bathrooms.

The location of the property is ideal for exploring the mountains and is within easy reach of the Italian coastline and the wonderful cities of Lucca, Pisa and Florence. There are excellent, good value restaurants very close by.

Tranquil retreat in the hills

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with 4 children and a grandparent. We had no problems following the directions sent by the owner Christine. We have visited once before, but drove from the airport in the dark this time. It really is a beautiful place with beautiful wooded hillsides and a stream at the bottom of the road. It was very hot whilst we were there and even when we couldn't face a sightseeing day, there was somewhere cool in the garden to read and relax after a dip in the pool. The butterflies flitting in and out of the lavender bushes are mesmerising. The children enjoyed the pool and having plenty of space to run around.

The house itself is very well maintained and appointed. It was absolutely spotless when we arrived. The kitchen has everything you could need, and we really valued the extra shower room downstairs especially after a swim. We had a couple of goes with the pizza oven which was fun.

The location is ideal for sightseeing, there is a railway station in a nearby village with a route along the Garfagna Valley and to the cities, and we drove to Lucca and Pisa for days out. The local towns and villages are well worth a look too, there are some great little shops for local cheeses, bread and salami etc as well as supermarkets.

The blacksmith who lives next door is very friendly and welcomes visitors. He is the last remaining craftsman in the area of his kind and uses a water wheel to drive his tools. He sells fantastic kitchen knives, coal shovels, mezzalunas etc. We also visited the local restaurant in the village, La Fonte. We went twice and had wonderful and fairly priced meals both times, much better than in the tourist traps in the cities. We think their pizzas are the best we have had in Tuscany and the the local trout they served was divine. We walked back from the restaurant which took about half an hour under a fantastic clear and starry sky.

Look out for the local wildlife too, my children saw a porcupine crossing the road, fireflies and a family of wild boar.

I can't think of anything bad to say about this property, we had a lovely holiday.

Owner's Response: It's rewarding to hear that returning guests enjoy our property so much and feel 'at home'. We have had quite a few returning guests: there is so much to do and see in this area, you really never run out of new places to visit.

Perfect for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Nice clean property. Our three young children loved the pool and garden. Beautiful area but a bit remote so car is essential. The local village is only a short drive away, as is the awesome Devil's Bridge at Borgo a Mazzano. Lucca is stunning and is a 20 minute train away (train station is a short car journey away and has plenty of parking). Also reasonably easy to get to by car.

Good information and communication from the owner - a very pleasant family holiday.

Relaxing holiday

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay at San Guiseppe. The house was very clean and the garden was beautifully maintained. The local restaurant 'La Fonte' was excellent. Very cheap and great quality food. It is a 2.5km walk from the villa. The villa is situated towards the mountains. We went to Lucca and Florence for day trips. There is a train service in Diecimo which is very easy to use - would recommend leaving the car there and getting the train to Lucca/Pisa/Florence for convenience. Overall we had a lovely holiday and would recommend to others (we took our two dogs who loved the large garden).

Perfect Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We were 4 adults who stayed at San Giuseppe for two weeks in July 2015, and we absolutely loved this house. The location of the house suited us perfectly, remote and quiet with beautiful scenery around us, yet a short enough drive to Lucca center with shopping, restaurants and sights worth seeing. The location of San Giuseppe makes it possible to explore cities like Pisa and Florence and the beaches in Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi.

We traveled a lot, but the hot summer mornings we often spent sunbathing by the pool in the huge private garden. It was great having a BBQ for late night dinners. We also tried out the pizza oven, which was a great experience but the result was not so good. We did not realize that it would take so many hours to heat up the oven. The pizza at the local restaurant, La Fonte was definitely much better! To be honest, all the food at La Fonte was great, and we recommend this family run restaurant. We also enjoyed the food at Molin restaurant. The service was great and the food even better, and it’s just a couple of minutes drive from the house.

Furthermore, a big contribution in making this a perfect vacation was the house owner, Christine who answered all of our questions before and during our stay. She responded quickly and thoroughly and gave us great tips and information.

All in all, this was a perfect vacation and we can’t wait to return, therefore we highly recommend staying at this house.

Owner's Response: These happy holiday makers from Norway certainly explored the whole area which is very varied from mountains to beaches. We are always happy to give suggestions for sight-seeing etc, if asked. The very good local restaurants were a deciding factor when buying the house, and we make the most of them. The star attraction has to be the beautiful, peaceful and private location.

Lovely house in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for two weeks with our four year son and had a fabulous time. It's beautifully peaceful, yet a fairly easy drive to the lovely Lucca.

Plenty to do, from playing in the pool, garden or nearby stream, to visiting local towns and villages. Great location also for visiting Lucca, Pisa or the coast.

We'd definitely go back.

In the hills about 20 minutes drive north-west of Lucca, between Diecimo (near Borgo a Mozzano) and Pescaglia. A good, gently rising road, NOT a mountain road to this point. The property is off the main road along a virtually level tarmac woodland road, very quiet, a mile from the village of PIEGAIO where there is a very good restaurant (torch needed if walking, no street lights) basic grocery shop, pharmacy and post office.

Railway station in Diecimo (10 minutes) with good links to Lucca and Pisa; a bank, petrol station, restaurants and shops. Borgo a Mozzano is the nearest town, 15 minutes drive, with all amenities and the historic Devil’s Bridge. The coast is a scenic 45 minute drive. The Garfagnana Park is very close.

Getting to the house is easy: from Pisa airport you join the motorway directly from the airport and exit at Lucca, follow the main route through Lucca and along the valley to Diecimo, then 10 minutes into the hills. It takes 60 - 90 minutes, depending on traffic

Other Activities: Skiing at Abetone, a 1 hour drive

Golf: The nearest 18-hole golf course is about 45 minutes drive:

Versilia Golf Club -

Via della Sipe, Pietrasanta -
