About the property

Your ideal family holiday getaway in the heart of the French countryside

Chez Mamie is a two-bedroom gîte with :

Upstairs : Two bedrooms; a double and a triple bedroom, with bunk and a separate single. A cot can be added in either bedroom, and the single bed can also be substituted with a cot, on request. It has a main bathroom with 140cm bath & over-bath shower.

Downstairs : Open-plan kitchen/diner and separate sitting room. The kitchen has an electric oven & gas hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, etc. The sitting room has a comfy sofa & armchair, UK satellite Freeview TV/French TNT TV, books, games, and tourist info. There is unlimited free Wi-Fi (who can live without it these days?!).

Outside, there is a decked area and private garden with BBQ & table & chairs.

Beyond the back garden you’ll find our glorious 10mx5m heated pool, and just beyond this is the play area for children, then over an acre of open garden for your children to play (if you can drag them out of the pool!!). As well as swings, a slide and trampoline, we provide a sports net and lots of racquets & balls for anyone who’s feeling energetic. Because we’re the last property on the lane, there are no passing cars (just the occasional tractor), and we’re surrounded by fields of sunflowers or maize and an oak wood.

Our location is peaceful and rural, with a pork butcher and cognac & pineau distillery within walking distance, a bakery, a general store and a seasonal al-fresco restaurant in a village 4 miles away, and a different restaurant in a village 3 miles away.

With over ten years’ experience of welcoming guests to our holiday rental properties here, we can offer lots of help & advice and to help you plan your days out, we have prepared a book of our own recommendations of where to go & what to see, and how best to enjoy this beautiful area, depending on what kind of day out takes your fancy. Because we live on site, we’re usually on hand if you need us for any kind of advice, and we have teenage daughters who are only too happy to offer their babysitting services for a small fee, should you fancy an adults-only evening (or daytime!!).

About Lisa Elsey

We are Ian & Lisa Elsey and we live here at Chez Augros in Vibrac in Charente Maritime with our two daughters, Katrina and Rebecca who go to school locally. We moved here in 2005, when the farmhouse was in need of near-total renovation and we've done most of the work ourselves, and have planned everything to suit your holiday, and make it as comfortable and suited to its purpose as possible.

We love this unspoilt, rural area that we live in - the roads are quiet and even the towns are fairly relaxed most of the time. The coast can get fairly busy in the summer, but it's easy to visit for a day, then escape back to our rural paradise!

Lisa Elsey purchased this farmhouse in 2005

Why Lisa Elsey chose Vibrac

We chose this area because it's close to so many things to see & do - Bordeaux and Saintes are both World Heritage sites, and we're also within easy reach of the gorgeous sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast but at the same time, we're located at the edge of a sleepy village - we didn't want to be in town, but didn't want to be cut off from civilisation, either! This is the second sunniest region of France, and being sun- and water-lovers it's just perfect for us. The weather is reflected in the large swathes of sunflowers and vines which surround us each summer, and which give us a tranquil landscape we're sure you'll love too.

What makes this farmhouse unique

We particularly love our glorious pool area - we keep the water nicely heated from early May to late September, and find that it's a delightful place to relax & unwind, even in Spring & Autumn. It's also the perfect place to cool off and take it easy after a hot day sightseeing, its views over the surrounding farmland make it a delightful place to chill out.

You'll also appreciate your dedicated outside space - we find ourselves spending most of our evenings outside in the summer and it's important to us to have somewhere pleasant and private to relax.

Lovely comfortable gites with heated pool

  • 5 of 5

Just had a fabulous two weeks holiday here. The Gite was extremely comfortable with everything you need just like home and so peaceful. The pool was absolutely glorious, so warm and inviting we went swimming every day, sometimes 2 or 3 times! The owners are lovely and friendly and are always happy to help if required. Thank you so much Lisa and Ian. Hope to see you again another year.

Comfortable tranquility in a gorgeous location!

  • 5 of 5

Just spent 2 weeks in Chez Mamie with my husband and 2 little ones (3 and 5). The property was spacious, clean and comfortable. Loved the separate living room with the exposed brick work, and the kitchen was so well equipped it was easy to do the cooking! The bedrooms were spacious and there was loads of storage.

The gardens were fun to run about in and the swimming pool was warm and inviting - it was hard to get the children out of it!

Lisa and Ian are the perfect hosts - always happy to provide advice on day trips, but leaving us with plenty of space to relax and enjoy our holiday. This is the second time we've been, and I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a quiet and relaxing break in rural France.

Owner's Response: It was lovely to welcome you back, it's great to see families enjoy their holidays here - your girls were great company for the other children who were here, and I enjoyed seeing you all relax & enjoy yourselves together. It's always easier to have a good time when your children are having fun, and I can imagine they were so tired after a day splashing in the pool, they slept very well! We're looking forward to seeing you again.

Delighful short stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were looking for a short stay. Our dates did not match perfectly the availability dates of the original gite, but Lisa kindly allowed us to stay in the bigger property.

The property was as described, and lovely and clean with a welcome pack of basics. Lisa and her husband were very helpful with local knowledge and the property guide was very useful in planning activities when we were not just lounging by the pool.

Would definitely recommend and would stay again if we were looking to return to this area of France.

We spent ten fabulous days at chez augros. The gite had everything you needed to make your stay comfortable, even down to a cool box and ice blocks. The area of Jonzac is so beautiful and quiet but within easy reach of shops, restaurants and much more . Lisa and Ian were very friendly and helpful hosts with some lovely gites to offer.

Lovely restored farm house with all your needs

  • 5 of 5

Ian and Lisa have obviously put a lot of hard work and time into restoring their farm house to provide us with lovely accommodation that was well equipped for all your needs. All kitchen appliances, TV and Wifi worked fine. Out doors we had a small private area for eating and BBQ, the heated pool was ideal with plenty of sunloungers and seating areas. We recieved good customer service with complimentary bottle of wine, water and tea/coffee, ideal after a long drive. Instructions on how to get to the property was excellent and there was information on all the local supermarkets, restaurants and places to visit. Overall a lovely rural location with friendly hosts - certainly worth a second visit for us.

Holiday heaven

  • 4 of 5

The gite was lovely. Plenty of space and all the amenities you could wish for. The pool and gardens were fantastic and kids absolutely loved it. The gite is rural but easily accessible to nearest towns and amenities. Lots to visit and explore in the area and lovely surroundings. Weather was fantastic too.

Thank you to Lisa, ian and the girls for being great hosts.

Would definitely recommend this lovely stay and area.

Owner's Response: We're very happy you had such a good time - and glad to see that the gite worked as it should for your family - it's designed to be a comfortable space to relax in after a (hot!!) day's sightseeing, delighted you got so much use out of the pool, but with your delightful girls, I'm certainly not surprised! Lovely to meet you.

We are 45 minutes by car from the sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast at Royan & 20 minutes from a lake with sandy beach. There are small coves and beaches, as well as harbours and caves that can be visited all along the coast of the Atlantic and the Gironde Estuary.

The nearest bakery is a few minutes from here, and the nearest supermarket is less than 10 minutes away.

The pretty town of Jonzac is 15 mins from us.

Cognac and Saintes (with its Roman amphitheatre) are 45 mins away as is the coast. La Rochelle is 90 mins away. Bordeaux is 50 mins away, & the vineyards of St Emilion and Brantôme in the Dordogne are less than 1.5 hours away (all times are by car).

The local market town of Jonzac, has a full range of shops, banks and supermarkets & swimming complex with a water slide, tropical lagoon, wavepool, bubble spas and saunas.

There is an excellent choice of restaurants within 15 minutes drive.

Between them, the local towns of Jonzac and Montendre hold fresh markets four days a week, and in summer there is a market somewhere near us, every day of the week - including Sundays.

In our local village is a heated open-air pool, with separate shallow bath for little 'uns. It is set in a small wooded area on the edge of the village, and enjoys glorious views of the surrounding countryside.

This area has an excellent sunshine record and has similar weather to the south east coast of France. Outside of the main June, July, August and September holiday periods it can be very pleasant, warm and surprisingly sunny. Because of this, many of the adult attractions are open at least from Easter to the end of October, if not all year round. There are so many things to see and do, it would be impossible to list them all, however if you have a particular interest in architecture, fishing, horse-riding, museums, food, cognac, or anything else, please let us know, and we can provide you with guidance and information to help you plan your holiday if you'd like. Alternatively, if you simply want to relax and breathe in the clean air of French countryside, then you can do so in great comfort.
