Welcome to Sorrento
The Sorrento Peninsula has always been an attractive attraction for human societies from antiquity to today. The name of the peninsula is given by its most important or sorrento name whose name derives from the Greek Surreo and this gives us the impression that it was a base of the Hellenic trade routes. Conquered first by the Sanniti in the 4th century and then by the Romans it became one of the most important tourist attractions of the Roman empire when the whole Gulf of Naples became a place of rest and leisure for the wealthy citizens. An example of a marvelous Roman villa is still visible through the remains of the villa of Pollio Felice where it is said that Queen Giovanna loved to bathe completely naked, what was considered scandalous and fueled the gossip of the time.
The fall of the Roman Empire and the barbarian invasions represented a period of chaos even for the whole peninsula that was seen to be passed between goths, Lombardies and Byzantines until it became an autonomous ducat.
The conquest of Ruggero the Norman loses all autonomy to Sorrento.
Attracting in business and prospering, the city of Sorrento had to confront often with the Saracen pirates who managed to capture it and put it in iron and fire in 1558. It was a real disaster from which local people struggled to recover and imposed the investment of strong resources for the improvement of the entire defensive structure with interventions at the city walls and the construction of sight towers.
In 1648 Sorrento was forced to resist a siege of 14 months by the armies of Giovanni Grillo during the period of antispam revolt.
The French soldiers at the command of Gioacchino Murat fought accurately with the British so as not to lose the strategic positions guaranteed by the Sorrento Peninsula.
With the eighteenth century Sorrento becomes a major destination of the Grand Tour, welcoming the young heirs of rich European families. This period begins with a tourist tradition that still represents the primordial vocation of the Sorrento territory.
