About Gary Whidden

Why Gary Whidden chose Johnson City
The river property came into my mother’s family in the 1890’s. My great grandfather built the family homestead. In 1901 (pre-dam) a flood came and damaged the home. With mules and logs they moved the 3,000 square foot, 2 story home across the creek and placed it on higher ground. Before the dam was built in the mid 1940’s, the river would sometimes look like a creek, at other times it would rise and come out its 50 foot banks. In the winter, the river would freeze and my great grandparents would cut squares of ice from the river and bury it in their home for later use. Before the bridge, there was a natural shelf that allowed the horse and buggies to cross the river in front of the cabins. The ground was farmed until I received it in 2003. My mother was raised on the property, until she married my father in 1947 and moved to Florida. We vacationed here every year, so I have always loved this place. I wanted a place of my own but hated the idea of having it sit empty most of the time. I am in the rental business in Florida so I decided to build something that could be rented when we are not able to be here. At that time, there were no buildings on the property so I was able to start from scratch. I really like the character of horse barns and thought, why not build one that could house people. So, in 2004, we built the cabins and it has been a great adventure! This past winter, we completed our retirement cabin. The cabin has three bedrooms, three baths, and an apartment on the lower level. We hope you choose us for your lodging in East Tennessee. We know you will enjoy it. - Gary and Patty Whidden

Best Weekend away!!
I was always a beach person. Not anymore!! This place is so relaxing and has everything you need. The sound of the river just makes all you stress and anxiety just float away. Such a great place to be with family and friends!! Will be back again. Place is TOP NOTCH!!
Great cabin beside the river
My family and I spent 4 days during Christmas at the Sycamore Cabin and we really enjoyed our stay. The cabin was comfortable with a warm electric fireplace and decorated beautifully for Christmas, a pleasant surprise! Also the beautiful lights in the trees were spectacular..adding in a full moon made for a magical Christmas Eve! The maintenance staff would visit daily and were very helpful. I would love to come back in the summer and enjoy more of the outdoor amenities and fishing! Would have given 5 stars but the bed in the master bedroom was very uncomfortable, in bad need of a new mattress and pillows! Other than that, all was perfect...I would definitely return!
Quaint, charming, cozy, homey
We stayed in this cabin to attend a family funeral in Johnson City. It was easy to find...off the beaten path but close to everything we needed. The cabin was well furnished, warm, and welcoming - the fireplace was even on and waiting for us when we arrived! Beautiful location on the river. We were there in very cold weather but I would imagine it would be amazing in the spring and summer! Kitchen had everything we needed to be able to cook and even had coffee, creamer, and sugar. Upstairs loft was perfect for our kids but I would not recommend for anyone with mobility issues - steps were very steep. Our dog loved the property and got to see his very first cows across the street! Thanks for a great stay!
Special place, better than I hoped.
We were so disappointed we missed the first night, due to storms in our area. The whole process was easy and questions were answered quickly and thoroughly.
My family so enjoyed gathering around the firepit in the evening. The beds were great. Eveything one could possibly need in the kitchen.
We plan on returning to visit family again, soon.
Thanks for sharing your slice of heaven.
Ahhh....peace and rest
