Why Marie McGrath Davis chose Ireland

My father purchased this property some time in the 1980s, but didn't build on it until 1992. He had built a house in Cloonagh, closer in toward Westport and, though it is a beautiful, enchanted part of Westport, he just couldn't forget the gorgeous view over Clew Bay from the Kilsallagh property, He started work on this house in Kilsallagh Lower while still living - on holidays, anyway - in Cloonagh. Truly, I doubt there is another view quite as beautiful many places in the world.

What makes this cottage unique

We'll defer to the English novelist, William Makepeace Thackeray who visited Westport in 1842, and wrote of the area, 'The most beautiful view I ever saw in the World. It forms an event in one's life to have seen that place so beautiful and so unlike other beauties that I know of. Were such beauties lying on English shores it would be a World's wonder perhaps, if it were on the Mediterranean or Baltic, English travellers would flock to it by hundreds. Why not come and see it in Ireland!'

Add to this that Westport is County Mayo's premier tourist destination, and considered one of the liveliest and most charming towns in the West of Ireland, and the visitor can be assured of the best in scenery, food, entertainment, attractions, craic and fond memories.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We left your relaxing home yesterday. Your house is absolutely lovely. Four nights was just a tid bit of what the beautiful Clew Bay has to offer, it left us wanting more. We would love to return some day. We enjoyed the Guinness Casserole at the Tavern, and Westport is just a great town. We made such great memories. We didn't want to leave. Thank you for opening your beautiful home to us.

Westcoast surprise

  • 3 of 5

Cosy home, this is a too small description for your castle at the slope of Crough St Patrick mountain.

I guess 6 or 7 could have their seats and comfort. Since we're two, it's a lot of space and a bathroom each.

A few remarks which are also mentioned in your guestbook.

A house in Ireland gets wet on all sides because of all the rain and drizzle. The heating can bearely cope this situation.

The washing machine did a good job. The dryer is easy to use if the manual keeps in sight but we had to find out!

Cooking if my favourite. Unfortunately most pans were dirty or even rosted. And the cookingmachine is very outdated. Quit an experience to find out how things work. Making a real Irish stew is even impossible lacking the right cooker.

We were a bit disappointed not te be personnaly welcomed or introduced in the house. The key was put in a simple spot and we had to make our own way. So we did and had a fine stay. Even the wheather was real Irish so we didn´t need to search the chairs for the outside view on the terrace.

Insects on the inside and outside of all windows made it hard to catch a bright view on Clew Bay..

This is really a beautiful house on an excellent spot. Some details could be improved. We mention the very old chairs and couches in the sitting room and in the bedroom. In the long term sitting could be dangerous ! And we give the suggestion to update the kitchen.

Thank you for being your guests!

Lovely Holiday by the Sea

  • 5 of 5

We were so pleased with our choice to stay in County Mayo at this property. There was very little fuss in renting this place. The owner was a great communicator, we were given access to the property at the time we wanted. The place wasn't too posh, and was really well equipped which are things we really look for when renting away from home. We enjoyed the views and were able to access the Reek, Clare Island, the Aran Islands and Galway. We will be back again!

Spacious and great location

  • 4 of 5

This place has loads of room and stunning view out over Clew Bay. Its very handy for climbing Croagh Patrick (about 4 miles to the car park) and Westport (10 miles). Its one of the best equipped holiday properties I've been to. We had a very relaxing break. Thanks!

Great vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had a great vacation. Everything was perfect. The house is confortable, full of every kind of households. The 9 places requested are not exactly 9 beds but you have to arrange yourself with the sofas. The best charateristic is the location: between Louisbourgh and Westport, with a wondwerful frontwiew on the sea, the islands and the mountains in the back (Croagh Patrick).

Beautiful, everything we wanted in a holiday

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful, home from home place to stay. Restful and action packed, it was everything we wanted. The house was clean and cosy. Although on holiday, the house felt like ours, facilities fantastic and as the listing described and much more. We were helped with places to visit, where to eat, where to shop and much more. All our questions were answered so promptly as well. The views were absolutely stunning as you drove up to the house. We did not want to leave when the day came to return back home. We would definitely recommend this place, area and everything else that we discovered to our friends, family, anyone who wished to visit "a Little piece of paradise/heaven". WE would definitely go again and do hope to return. Definitely deserves ALL the star rating in our book!! and more

Everything you need in a holiday cottage

  • 5 of 5

A big thank you for letting us use your lovely holiday home, we have used many but this has to be the best equipped one to date.

The way to discribe this is a real home from home, very comfy, plenty of room, very private and has great ever changing lovely views of clew bay.

John who met up up with us and showed us to the house was the perfect host making us very welcome and is on the end of the phone if there are any questions, a great asset to this property.

Situated between Westport and Louisburgh it is convenient for the shops and beaches as well as a short drive to lots of places of interest.

The icecreams at Old Head Cafe are a must "the biggest we've ever had". The beach at old head is lovely with lovely clean sand and nice views.

My husband likes his fishing so Old Head and Lecanvey were very close and safe.

Would love to come again
