Why Owner chose Birkenhead
A secluded and romantic setting for your holiday, the cottage is also within easy reach of delightful Oxton Village which offers a choice of shops pubs and excellent restaurants - including the Michelin starred Fraiche (prior booking essential). In the living room there is a large and comfortable couch to curl up on as well as a log burning stove, high speed broadband and Sky TV. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals. There are two bedrooms with plenty of storage space for cases and clothes and with a verandah with table and chairs off the master bedroom. Away from the cottage, the Wirral offers a wealth of beautiful places for the whole family to walk and enjoy from historic Birkenhead Park, to country parks and coastline. All within easy reach. Great for walking the dog. Further afield, by car, public transport or the famous Mersey Ferries, guests will easily find the attractions of Liverpool’s waterfront, shops and museums. The cottage is comfortable, cosy and private. We think it is the ideal location for a quiet romantic getaway or as a base for the family to explore the Wirral countryside and the attractions and shops of Liverpool.

A lovely cottage which is situated in a quaint lane and a good location for exploring Merseyside. Much larger than you would imagine and has everything you would need. Absolutely fabulous that you can take dogs and the yard is fully enclosed so there is no chance of escape. Hosts were tremendously helpful! The only reason I didn’t give it 5 was because the front garden needed a sweep!
Lovely cottage, with personal touches
Unfortunately we encountered some problems, needless to say the owners were on hand immediately to help us, we cannot praise them enough. They really went out of their way to rectify the problems, but they were technical faults and not the fault of anyone. We really appreciate everything they did to make our stay enjoyable, and we did enjoy our stay. And we recommend this cottage to anyone, and the people on hand were fantastic, things were just out of their capability but would definatley recommend, the cottage is lovely with personal touches upon arrival and the staff/owners were lovely and couldn’t do enough for us.
Thank you for your generous feedback Tracey. I was sorry about the difficulties you had and the fact we weren't able to resolve them all but I'm glad you enjoyed your stay.
Lovely property and not far from liverpool or chester. Fab hot tub and a nice quiet location
Thank you Alice So pleased you enjoyed your stay.
Great time away, a few minor issues, but all dealt with quickly and efficiently 😀
Thank you Adrian. So glad you all enjoyed your stay.
Enjoyed it. Only issue is fridge doesn’t work very well.
Hi Jean. We sadly I wasn't aware of the fridge problem during your stay but it has been resolved and the fridge replaced. Thank you.
Ideally placed for what we wanted.
Parking was not easy at times.
The cottage was quaint but overall the cleanliness was not brilliant . Issue with the smoke alarm . The fridge was not working properly and smelt .
Oxton, where Sophies Retreat is situated is on the Wirral peninsula which is surrounded by water, the rivers Dee and Mersey to the South and North and the sea to the west. There are sailing clubs and a boating lake to the west in Hoylake and West Kirby.
We have several excellent golf clubs including the Royal Liverpool at Hoylake.
Wirral is blessed with many great areas for walks. Just around the corner is The ARno and Oxton Fields for local dog walking. Other places to walk are Royden Country Park, Dibbinsdale Nature Reserve and the historic Birkenhead Park (where there is also a children's playground) as well as several parts of the shore.
Liverpool is easily accessible by ferry, train, bus or car where there are many attractions and good shopping.
