About Sarah & Gareth

We open the house for the majority of the year as a guest house - Old Shanklin Guest House, making and growing our own produce.

Sarah trained to be a chef and studied hotel management, working in 4 & 5 star hotels in London and Gareth worked in reprographics in Soho. We moved here in 2011 and started the business from nothing. In 2017 we decided to diversify, to enable us to go on holiday in half terms with our daughter who started school, so decided to start renting the house as self catering. The rented part is just the guest house plus the kitchen, so there are no personal effects left around.

Sarah & Gareth purchased this house in 2011

Why Sarah & Gareth chose Shanklin

Sarah came to the Isle of Wight every year as a child and always wanted to live here. It has been even more enjoyable living here as holidaying here. We love the Old Village and the convenience of the railway station in town with services going into London, Gatwick, Bristol, Bath, Brighton and all over via the catamaran. It's so easy. We are so close to the beach we can here the fog horns, but we also hear the donkeys from the sanctuary if the wind is blowing in the right direction! The Village Inn is our favourite pub, we also go to Pendletons a lot and the Waterfront Inn. We do love exploring the Island and all it's food and drink. Our favourite thing about the Island is the walking and outdoor life. Walking books are available to borrow. We are happy to answer any questions guests may have.

What makes this house unique

Our house is just about Victorian, but was finished just after Victoria died (at Osborne House). The rooms are spacious and quite square. When we bought the house the first floor rooms already had enormous en suites. We have updated them over the last few years, excpet the Bonchurch Suite, the largest room, which has a jacuzzi bath and separate shower. The other 2 rooms we created large en suites. Our kitchen is just right for cooking for 10 people. With 3 ovens and plenty of space for all our equipment. We are lucky enough to have a car park and space at the front to park too.
