Altea is without doubt one of the most charming towns to be found on Spain's 'White Coast', located in the Alicante region on the Costa Blanca. The town is just 11 miles north of Benidorm, yet the two resorts are worlds apart. Altea is similar to other Costa Blanca towns in that it has a new and an old neighborhood.
Altea is a relaxing holiday destination with historic buildings, cobbled streets, a beautiful church and a number of typically Spanish shops, restaurants and cafes.
The resort of Altea Hills is perched on a mountain side and provides breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, the old town of Altea, and on a clear day you can even see the Alicante skyline which is around 45 miles away. From Altea Hills you can be on the beach within just a few minutes by car. Things to do and places to visit in Altea.
Altea has many attractions and you will not be stuck for things to do. The resplendent church of Nuestra Senora del Consuelo was built in 1910 and it is a splendid example of a Mediterranean church with hand-painted, sea blue mosaic tiles.
The shopping district of Altea is very quaint and old-style Spanish. The shops usually open between 10 am and 9 PM, but many shop owners will adhere to the custom of taking a siesta during the hot months, and therefore will close between 2 and 4 PM.
Altea is on foot, as this way you can see the delightful old buildings on the cobbled streets that would be missed if you were traveling by car.
In the main square of Altea there is a fascinating bohemian market where local craftspeople, artists and other sellers sell unique items between the months of April and September.
Golfers will find the Altea Golf Club to be on par with other top golf courses in Spain; therefore Altea is a popular destination with golfers from all over Europe.
Don Cayo golf is a mountain course you will not forget with every time a different approche plus a good restaurant.
Rent-a-House-Spain, is offering the best holiday places possible.
Altea is a town located on the Mediterranean coast in the province of Alicante at about 50 kilometers north-east of the city of Alicante and 100 kilometers south of the city of Valencia. Altea has retained its character, including the absence of high rises. The center includes a modern area with many shops and a picturesque old Moorish area on a hill with steep streets, stairs and white houses. Here are many galleries and restaurants.
The coast south of Calpe would have a microclimate that winters are significantly warmer than the north of Calpe. This makes Altea and the whole area, including the nearby town of Alfaz del Pi, very attractive for people who are coming for a winter break.
There are about 10 golf courses in the vicinity, the nearest is Don Cayo in Altea la Vella (1 km).
Hiking: many walks in the mountainous hinterland, but also along the beaches.
Theme parks in Benidorm such as Terra Mitica, Terra Natura, Mundomar and Aqualandia nice trips possible.
Worth a visit: Fuentes de Algar, a series of waterfalls in the Algar at Callosa d'en Sarria, where you can swim with them the nearby Cactus Gardens and El Castell de Quadalest.
Our Village - Altea la Vella
The old part is on a small hill with tiny streets and a lovely church. You must look inside. In the newer part of the village there is a theater, school, bars, cafes and shops, and a couple of bakers.
It only takes 4-5 minutes drive down to the village and there is plenty of parking up behind the bank. There is a 9 hole golf course nearby at Club Don Cayo. Two 18 hole Jack Nicklaus designed courses at the Real de Faula at the back of Benidorm. Easy to get to the motorway but book ahead in high season. The main road through the village goes to the coast (4 minutes in car to L'Olla beach) or inland to Guadaleste, one of the most visited places in the Costa Blanca. To get to the very top of Guadaleste Village you have to go through the big house! On the way there is a visit to the Fonts D'Algar, a lovely waterfall. The Algar is the river that runs out to Altea. This only happens once or twice a year, but is a wonderful surprise.
Our main town is the historic sea front town of Altea with its palm-lined promenade, small fishing harbor, and shops. Lots of parking here but busy. A walk up through narrow cobbled streets and steps between white washed houses will bring you to the main square at the top. Here you will be greeted with a wonderful church and views down the coast to Benidorm, or back to our mountain. If you can not make the walk up you can park around by the theater and then its a easy flat walk into the square, but you will miss some of the cobbled streets. Tuesday morning is the vegetable market in town, with fresh fish in the covered market just around the corner, and the main market on the same day is down behind the football pitch at the river bed. It's huge.
Altea nestles at the foot of the Sierra Bernia mountain range, next to the mouth of the river Algar. Many civilizations have come and gone. Iberians, Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans and Muslims all left their mark and their influence. The name of the town comes from the Greek Altahia which means, "I cure", and the name of the river means "the river of health".
There are fiestas all year round in Altea. Highlights include the Easter Carnival, the seaman's celebrations in Honor of San Lorenc, and the Castell de L'Olla festivities with fireworks and music on sea and land around 12th August, and the town's main fiestas in honor of the Santissim Crist del Sagari and Sant Blai (Altea's patron saint), with the traditional Moros in Cristians, a mock battle between the Moors and Christians on the forth week in September. Our village Altea la Vella has its own 2 week long fiesta around the last week in January or early February with giant Paella, street barbeque and a candlelit procession. Nearby towns of Benidorm, Calpe, La Nucia, Alfaz, Albir, Polop all have their own festivals at different times so do not be surprised to hear the fireworks going off somewhere in the distance.
If you are feeling energetic, beyond the villa there is a dirt track road where you can walk around and up onto the ridge. Beyond that there is a walking track that will take you to the top of the mountain to a picnic area. Take good walking shoes, plenty of water, and a mobile phone. Climb up further and you will find a cave at the top that will lead you through the mountain to a secret valley. Watch out for dinosaurs and teradactyls on the other side. Do not do this in the heat of the day. Enjoy the lovely smell of wild flowers, herbs and pine in the springtime. Fantastic views.
Take good walking shoes, plenty of water, and a mobile phone. Climb up further and you will find a cave at the top that will lead you through the mountain to a secret valley.
Discover all that's hidden on the Mediterranean shores. Egypt, Greece, Rome and the Islands, thousands of years converted into moments of fun emotion and adrenaline. This is the largest theme park on the coast with excitement for all ages. A spectacular day out that must not be missed!
This is the largest water park in Europe. It offers fun and excitement including the famous Kamikaze slide for those dare devils, travel at great speed and enjoy the splash at the end. Aqualandia offers something for every age group.
