Skiing and Cycling in the Oisans: Oz is fully integrated into the huge Alpe d'Huez ski area with around 250km of pistes. This is one of the highest ski resorts in Europe with a snow-sure and sunny aspect. There are runs for all abilities and access from Oz to all kinds of slopes is both quick and convenient via two high speed gondolas.Queuing is rare even at peak times.

Our region is famous for having some of the best road cycling routes in Europe. Legendary mountain cols such as the Galibier, Glandon, Croix de Fer and Lautaret are on the doorstep while the Telegraphe and La Madeleine are a step further. We have secure storage for bikes and can arrange rental bikes for those that do not bring their own. These range from the relatively modest to full Carbon frames, etc. Bring your own pedals and they will be fitted. Mountain biking is also well catered for here with many marked trails. In the summer season the ski lifts are open and have been specially designed to carry bikes as well as people up the mountain.

Family activities in the SUMMER: We are often asked what is there for children to do by parents concerned that they will be stuck in the middle of rural France with nothing for the children to do.

Its not like that here, there are so many things to do for adults and children of all ages.

Oz has a Kamikaze park which features zip lining in the trees. On Lac Verney, just below Le Chateau, there are dinghies, windsurfers pedaloes and canoes. On local rivers there is rafting, tubing, canyoning and kayaking. Activities like Archery and Tennis are well organized along with a children's creche. Mini golf for budding masters or players up for a challenge. There is proper golf for grown-ups too. There are three outdoor pools, a paddling one for small children, medium for most kids and an adult one with a diving board. Local lakes have beaches with swimming and water sports. There is a children's farm with donkeys, ponies, pigs and rabbits etc. In 2013 a full size ice skating rink has been opened in Vaujany a short drive from Oz.

Holiday activities: For Alpinists there is summer climbing on some spectacular peaks. You can warm up with some bouldering or on some of the permanent climbing walls including Allemonts spectacular needle. Alternatively there are more routes than you climb in a season.

There are Via Ferrata for those want a taste of climbing without the need for experience or training.

Down in the valleys there are walks and bike trails in the woods with minimal gradients, great for getting up to speed or for small children. There are great drives through the mountains and along the lakes to traditional market towns. Borg d'Oisans, just down the road, has a lively market on Saturdays.

There is also an local farm that makes tasty goats cheese. The cheese comes in various forms, from the fresh milk-white to the hairy blue 'sec' that looks pretty scary, but actually tastes quite mild and delicious.

About Andy Christodolo or Gillian Lawrence

Andy and Gill have worked in hospitality all over the world for many years. We are experienced at making sure everything goes just right when you visit us.

Andy Christodolo or Gillian Lawrence purchased this chateau / country house in 2011

Why Andy Christodolo or Gillian Lawrence chose Isere

Oz en Oisans village is in the perfect place to enjoy both the summer and winter seasons. Its really convenient for the lifts which in the winter take you directly to Alpe d'Huez and its fabulous skiing, and in July and August open up to take both mountain bikers and walkers up the mountains. Its close to the Tour de France routes, the famous 21 bends and the great cols of the Alps. Its quiet location means we love to hear the birds and the river running close by.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Le Château d'Oz is in a beautiful traditional mountain village and was built over 400 years ago. It used to be used as a farmhouse but we have made some improvements to it and its now a very comfortable country house. As its the biggest house in the village, it has always been called 'Le Château'. We are just down the road from the Ski lifts and Alpe d'Huez so you are close enough to be convenient yet far enough away to enjoy the peace and quiet.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I've traveled throughout the Alps and over the years have stayed in countless hotels, inns, and B&Bs. I have my pick of places to stay and resorts to ski but I keep coming back year after year to Chateau d'Oz and Alpe d'Huez. Outside of five-star hotels and Michelin-star restaurants, the French don't really (ahem) excel at customer service. And the Alps can be particularly disappointing with such strange practices as towel surcharges, 80s-era furniture, and (my favourite) the 10:00 a.m. check out. Charming owners Andy (manager) and Gill (chef) provide an experience that combines excellent accommodations, delectable meals, and friendly service. So I wasn't surprised this year to meet the same families as last Christmas because once you stay at the Chateau d'Oz, you won't stay anywhere else. We'll be returning with a Spyns Tour de France group this July and I can't wait.

Great place to stay for skiing, amazing food and hosts who couldn't do a enough for us. Really close to the ski station but feels like you're in a quaint real French village. Brilliant for family groups with kids.

Another great half term

A big thank you to Gill and Andy, Martine and Anthony for giving us another fantastic week. We are a family of four and enjoyed our stay in the top room, complete with kitchen-even a dishwasher! All very spacious, especially the large bathroom ! We enjoyed the fabulous cuisine-from breakfast, afternoon tea and sumptuous evening meal in relaxed company-following our pre dinner drinks in the homely and comfortable lounge. We enjoyed chatting to the other families and our children loved the freedom and space in the chateaud'oz. Andy and Gill were both very helpful with advice re driving to the slopes-just 10 minutes away and putting on snow chains. We had a fabulous week skiing with lots of powder snow and some sun- making tobogganing great fun on the last day. We can't wait to come back next year.

So good we came back the same season!

  • 5 of 5

Having stayed at Le Chateau d'Oz for the first time at the very beginning of the ski season in December, we have just returned from a second ski break there, and this time we took friends along!

We love the warm welcome at Le Chateau d'Oz, chatting with the owners and staff over delicious dinners every night, and the super-comfy beds. On being given a different room to last time, we discovered that each suite in the chateau has something different to recommend it. Both had plenty of storage, warm cosy beds, sofas, and functional kitchens, but the first room had a balcony with wonderful views, a mini drying room for ski gear, and a bath that was on the small side, whereas the second had no balcony or drying room (still had the views, just not the balcony), but a bigger bedroom and a full length bath. My personal preference was for the second room, but I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong room-wise.

As previously, Andy and Gill were generous with their time and knowledge and happily provided tips on skiing as well as plentiful encouragement to the first-time skier in our party. We were grateful to Andy for his help with booking ski lessons and equipment.

We again got on really well with chalet staff Leo and Laura, who are great fun and really helpful, and spent their precious time off sharing their knowledge of the resort with us and introducing the braver amongst us to new bits of exciting off piste!

We also really appreciate the Chateau's flexibility. Whereas it seems a lot of places will only take skiers for whole week holidays, this isn't always practical, so I'm sure we're not the only ones who value the opportunity to pop over for a long weekend. At only two hours' drive from Lyon airport (and even less from Grenoble), hardly any time is wasted in the transfer, and we were again able to ski all morning on our last day before catching an evening flight home.

Thanks again to all at Le Chateau d'Oz for another wonderful stay!

Absolutely Spectacular!

My wife and I stayed at the Le Château d’Oz for three nights (from August 31st to September 2nd of 2013). We completely loved the location and our hosts, Andy and Gill, who were both very hospitable and accommodating. We loved that Andy and Gill joined us and the other guests at the dinner table each evening. They also know the area extremely well and offered many lovely suggestions for things to do, scenic routes to take via car or cycling. Our room was very spacious, comfortable, and clean and the windows opened completely to a stunning view of the Alps. Our room faced the front of the Chateau and had a large living room with a small kitchen and a large bathroom…fully equipped for any stay.

We found this Château via after reading a few comments from previous customers. Many months prior to our stay, we had corresponded with Andy over email to arrange for rental of a road bike in order to bike Alpe d’Huez. A full carbon Giant road bike was ready and waiting for us when we arrived – now that is excellent customer service! We also loved the dinners that Gill cooked and the local red wine! Gill is a wonderful chef, very talented with both the presentation and flavors of each meal. We enjoyed talking to Andy and Gill during dinner and hearing about the other guests’ outings from the day. If had more than a 5-star system, Le Chateau d’Oz would be more than deserving. We highly recommend Le Château d’Oz to anyone who plans to stay in the alps, whether for a skiing trip, cycling trip, hiking trip, etc.

Andy, Gill… thank you very much for making the Alps part of our French vacation, a truly unforgettable experience. Don’t be surprised if we book another stay with you soon.

Le Château d'Oz is in the beautiful and spectacular Oisans region of the French Alps near Alpe d'Huez and Grenoble. Set in the traditional village of Oz en Oisans it is a haven of peace and tranquility but with access to some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. This area is good to visit all year round. In the winter we are part of the huge Grand Rousses/Alpe d'Huez ski area. During the summer cycling dominates the sporting activities but there are many other things to do as well. Les Ecrins National Park is on the doorstep with its high mountain plateaus and dramatic 3000m peaks, a paradise for walkers and climbers. Despite the fact that this is one of the best places for an active sports holiday Le Château is an excellent place to snooze in the shadow of the trees in our garden, hearing nothing but the local stream, the breeze in the leaves and the birds. Videos of Le Chateau can be seen on youtube.

Other Activities: Donkey trekking, canyoning, childrens farm, kite surfing

Golf: The Golf International de Grenoble has a spectacular 18 holes ringed by mountains which is open all year and less than an hour away. There are also several interesting 9 holes right up in the mountains which are only open during the summer.

Ski: Oz en Oisans is part of the larger Grand Rousses area which is best known by its largest village, Alpe d'Huez. Le Château d'Oz is connected by a regular free ski bus that leaves from near the bottom of the driveway or you can drive in about 7 min to the lifts. Parking is easy and close to the lifts. Queues are rare, even in peak season. Access to one of the largest ski resorts in the world is fast and convenient. Excellent ski school for all ages. Shops have equipment for all standards and all snow sports. Lots of snow making so a reliable run back down to the bottom.

FREE Transfers can be arranged from Grenoble airport in the winter, December to April, for up to 8 persons on a first come first served basis

We can arrange transfers from Lyon airport in the summer.
