3 bedroom, swimming pool and extensive gardens set in the mountains

Space

La Zafra (some maps spell it La Safra) is our holiday home in a quiet hamlet containing a church, a small Bodega and a handful of houses all owned by Spanish families. The surrounding countryside is dedicated to growing olives, grapes, cherries, sunflowers and almonds. There are many great wines you can buy from the local vineyards. If you are looking for peace and quiet, great scenery and a traditional Spanish experience this is the place for you.

Guest access

Outdoors you have full access to a gorgeous 8x4 metre pool, a large surrounding pool area with giant comfy bean bags for lounging around the pool and a selection of inflatables and pool toys. The garden is mature with cherry, pear, plum and apricot trees that you are welcome to help yourself to if they are fruiting during your stay. There is an outdoor veranda (known as a naya) with a large family dining table that seats 8 people. Next to the naya is a vine covered swing seat with views over the mountains. A large chimenea barbecue is situated close to the naya. There is an additional seating area and table situated nearer to the pool which is a great place to have breakfast in the morning sunshine. The interior is very traditional and has original wooden beams and features running throughout. The majority of floors are covered in typical Spanish tiles. The lounge has a large log burner that is fantastic if you're there in the winter months and there is plenty of olive wood to use if required. There is a large dining table that seats eight people comfortably. Each room has an oil heater for the winter months and fans for summer. The kitchen and utility room are fully equipped and include an oven / hob, dishwasher, toaster, microwave, kettle and a large fridge and separate freezer. There are lots of pans for self-catering and plenty of glasses, china, mugs, cutlery and cooking utensils. To the rear of the kitchen is a bathroom (with shower) and a utility room that contains a washing machine and a dishwasher. To the rear of the house is a games room complete with a fridge, pool table and dart board. The master bedroom is very large with a king size bed, lots of wardrobe space and bedside lights / tables, tub chair, big en-suite bathroom with large rain-forest shower, sink and toilet. The master bedroom has double aspect views via an individual terrace overlooking the mountains and vineyards to the front. The second bedroom is large with a sloping ceiling. It contains twin single beds, a double bed, a chest of drawers and a velux window. Bedroom three faces onto the vineyards and gets amazing sunsets. This room comes complete with a chest of drawers, bedside table and a double bed. There are security bars on all downstairs windows except for the kitchen which backs onto a lovely enclosed courtyard with a small breakfast table and chairs. The location is extremely safe and everyone looks out for each other. We have unlimited Wi-Fi and there are books, games, DVDs, internet enabled stereo and a TV that picks up all freeview UK stations. Linen and towels are provided and there is a washing machine and plenty of drying areas. There is also a Bluetooth enabled waterproof outdoor speaker. The pool and gardens are maintained weekly by the the people listed as the emergency contacts for the finca. The pool can sometimes need a quick hoover during the summer months in between cleans and there are instructions in the house on how to do this.

Neighbourhood overview

The local area has countryside walks, waterfalls, mountains, multiple castles and beautiful villages. If you need a change of scenery Alicante is only a 45 minute drive away or you can be in Valencia within an hour. The entire area is very unspoiled and very typical of this area of Spain. There is a full guidebook in the house providing you with information on the local attractions we have discovered as well as a Lonely Planet guidebook. The nearest town is Villena (pronounced just like Vienna but with a B rather than V) which is a 20 minute drive from the house. Villena has plenty of shops, bars, supermarkets and restaurants. There is also a picturesque village 10 minutes drive from the house call Fontenars del Alforins that has a few bars, restaurants, small grocery shop, bakery, butchers and every Sunday morning there is a market selling locally produced fruit and vegetables. This is also the closest ATM to the house.

Getting around

You will need a car to get here as there is no public transport. The nearest bus and train stations are located in Villena. We can provide you with a list of reputable car rental companies and advise on how to avoid surcharges at Alicante airport for additional insurances.

Other things to note

As this is a country house, depending on the time of year you go you can expect there to be countryside 'visitors'. These can range from bees / wasps / bugs / flies / bats (at night). The wasps will ignore you if you ignore them. There are fly curtains on the downstairs entrances to the kitchen. As the house is over 100 years old, the doorways are quite low so anyone over 5’ 6” will have to be careful going between rooms. There are strategically placed 'Duck' signs to help remind you to! Ceiling height is good unless you are over 6’ where you might struggle in the kitchen area and bedroom 2.

Why Carl & Laura chose Villena

We searched high and low for a secluded property that was away from the tourist hot spots. When we found this house we made an offer the same day and moved in 8 weeks later. We have amazing mountain views but are only 45 minutes form the airport. Villena, the nearest major town is only 12 minutes drive.
