About the property

Stunning private location overlooking the fields and sea. Beautiful idyllic spot

Porthcothan Bay, Sleeps 4 (+2)

Situated in a quiet secluded location with superb uninterrupted views over the North Coast of Cornwall from Trevose Head in the north to Park Head in the south. Golden Burn Cottage Caravan is less than 5oom’s walk from Porthcothan Bay which is one of Cornwall’s finest unspoilt beaches. Both spacious and comfortable, this accommodation is ideal for both families and couples looking to get away from it all and relax in a stunning coastal location.

Nestled between Newquay and Padstow, Porthcothan Beach is a beautiful North West facing cove backed by grassy dunes. Featured in the Marine Conservation Society Good Beach Guide for 2014 you may also recognise it from BBC’s Poldark as it features as Nampara cove. Like many in Cornwall, this peaceful cove oozes atmosphere and history, even now it is easy to imagine smugglers from those Poldark days coming ashore with their ill gotten goods.

At low tide the beach opens out to connect with smaller coves leaving plenty of wide open spaces for families to take full advantage of. At high tide, it is sheltered by the surrounding cliffs giving it a much more private, secluded feel.

With the South West Coast Path running through Porthcothan Bay, the surrounding area is easily accessible, where you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic views. The beach has its own small shop with a reasonable sized council carpark right opposite the beach. However if you fancied stretching your legs a bit further, National Trust’s Bedruthan Steps offering stunning clifftop views, is approx 45min walk (2.1 miles).

Padstow is just a 16min drive away offering a plethora of restaurants, cafe’s, pubs and many wonderful boutique shops. Rick Stein has his infamous restaurant, cafe and cookery school whilst also available during the summer months are boat trips, sea life tours and guided walks.

In the opposite direction is Newquay (8.7 miles away). Larger than Padstow, Newquay is the surfer’s mecca during the summer. Even if you’re not into catching the waves, you can always chill out on the beach or paddle in the shallows. With plenty of shops and eateries it’s the perfect place to while away a day taking in the sea air.

Porthcothan beach is a north west-facing cove backed by grassy dunes popular for sunbathing and a favourite with families. The sandy beach opens out at low tide, connecting up with small coves to the north and south and at high tide the beach becomes very sheltered from swell and winds due to the cliffs.

Swimming and board sports are on offer in a sheltered sea with water quality that is routinely checked and currently approved by DEFRA. It is located south of Constantine Bay with the nearest village St Merryn only ten minutes drive away. The coast path gives splendid views to both the north and the south as well as displaying a variety of wildlife.

Parking, shops and toilet facilities are close by with beach level access.

Surfers find Porthcothan to be a quiet surf spot and normally no decent consistent surf. Will work from low to mid tide and breaks on sand banks producing lefts and rights. Suitable for beginners. Dangers: Rocks, occasional bad rips on spring tides, surfable at low to mid tide. Wind: E/SE offshore

Lifeguards patrol this beach from late May until the end of September. You are advised to always check beach conditions before your visit and always follow the lifeguards advice whilst on the beach. Current beach conditions and lifeguard cover can be checked on

Porthcothan is a dog friendly beach, with no seasonal dog ban. Please keep your dog under control and clean up mess immediately.
