About Brenda Liston
This beautiful old Sea Captain's home "found" us when we made a trip to Maine in 2011. It needed we've done plenty of that to ensure it was preserved for future generations to enjoy. Just the same as Captain Albert V. Nickels and his wife Elizabeth, we have traveled all over the world, lived in many countries (and states), collected wonderful memories and even a few antiques along the way. So the Captain's home was begging for us to come fill it with beautiful things and bring it to life again. It is very much the way Captain Nickels built it in 1874, but with a few upgrades to ensure it's comfortable for today's traveler. Come by and say "hello!"
What makes this Apartment unique
Top apartment in an historic home where you can step back to a place in time where sea captain's from the coast of Maine (and this house) traveled to exotic places with sails unfurled as they reached such foreign shores as Havana, Hong Kong, and the English ports. In the evening, enjoy the refreshing sea breezes from your own balcony.

comfortable and roomy, but....
This is a tough review to write as the place is full of contradictions. If you’re looking for a spacious two bedroom unit, each bedroom with its own bathroom with shower or whirlpool tub and approximately 42-50 inch flat screen tv with cable, Walk-in closet and air conditioner, this would be the place for you. It also has its own private entrance and private deck overlooking the absolutely spectacular Penobscot Bay. Conversely, if you were looking for luxury accommodations and detailed finish work on moldings and ceilings and carpeting, good WiFi (half of the unit has no WiFi) etc., the unit is fairly devoid of these things. Many of the bulbs in ceilings are not functioning and the bed that is in the cupola up the circular stairway certainly would not accommodate even one adult. It could accommodate a couple of small children. However, You would not put children up there as you would be concerned for their safety due to the spiral staircase and I don’t think that the railing on the deck is constructed in such a way as to be safe for small children. The stairs on the spiral staircase are essentially unfinished. To access the two bedroom unit you do have to negotiate two rather steep staircases. If walking or stairs are difficult for you you definitely do not want to consider this unit. There would be a problem renting this with a second adult couple, as one couple would have no WiFi or privacy as one of the bedrooms has no door. We were not traveling with anyone else so we could concentrate on the fact that it is extremely roomy and due to the wonderful weather we had we could appreciate the absolutely gorgeous view from our deck. Also, the air conditioning worked quite satisfactorily despite the fact that it is on the top floor and every day of the seven that we were there the temperature outside was around 80° or higher. The rest of the house we didn’t really see because it is extremely inconvenient to access it from the unit. It is important to note that the two bedroom third-floor unit is not considered part of the B&B due to the fact that it has its own kitchen and does not come with the breakfast the B&B offers. In summary, if you don’t really care about the details that would be the difference between 2 1/2 stars and four stars, and you want to have plenty of space inside with a deck outside, this could be the place for you. Just think carefully about how much the finishing touches, WiFi and privacy (if traveling with another couple)
. Thank you for taking time to respond and providing feedback of your visit. We wished you had shared your dissatisfaction immediately and we would have attempted to make different accommodations for you. The Captain's Suite is marketed as a flexable suite to meet traveling famlies accomondations at a reasonable price in a beautiful setting. As earlier reviews have shared the suite enjoys splendid comments year in and year out. The 3rd floor addition you mentioned in the widows walk and was specifically designed for children hence the drop down beds. The feedback we receive from children staying is one of a great adventure in an old sea captains home. You are correct in pointing out the breakfast is not included with the suite. The suite is set with a full kitchen inside and grill, firepit and table for four outside on the deck. The breakfast, as announced prior to booking, you're welcome to join us for the three course breakfast at $25.00 per person. All guests staying with us, either in the suites or internal to the Inn, are welcome to enjoy the Captain Nickels main floor by simply walking in the guest entrance (Front Door). We are extremely proud of the history of this famous sea captain and the rich heritage his home, built 1874, brings to this community. We purchased the Inn seven years ago where it sadly stood for three years in foreclosure. We have lovingly restored this home and are most anxious to share it with others and make their trip to Maine a memorable experience. Once again we sincerely wish you had shared your dissatisfaction early in your visit so we could have sought alternative solution either within the Inn or via one of several associate Inns in the immediate area.
