About Polly Rubinstein
Having grown up in North London, I now live in a more rural life in Rutland, England's smallest county (although I do miss the energy and culture of London, so perhaps one day...) I adore places with character, appreciating natural materials and the patina of time with all its imperfections and idiosyncrasies, so I avoid purpose built tourist traps and can think of nothing worse than spending a holiday in an apartment block, with satellite TV and all mod cons!
Polly Rubinstein purchased this Farmhouse in 2000
Why Polly Rubinstein chose Ta' Għammar
I've been going to Gozo since I was four when my parents bought and renovated a farmhouse in Xaghra, finally selling it 20 years later. For many years I had a combination of happy memories of childhood holidays, combined with a sense of longing and a desire to create a similarly wonderful experience for my own family. So when the time came to consider buying a holiday home I was delighted to rediscover Gozo and find that it had changed little in the intervening years and was still wonderfully unspoilt. The remarkable thing about such a small island is that we keep discovering new places - hidden swimming spots, deserted coastal walks and beautiful backstreets to explore.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
I've said that the house is in a tiny hamlet in the quietest part of the island, which means most times of day and night it is gloriously silent apart from birdsong and the hum of insects. However, as you will get anywhere in Gozo, there are some disturbances which I'd like to pre-warn you about... Firstly, every village has a 'festa' during the spring and summer months - bands, processions, church bell ringing, firework displays, street stalls, street parties, extravagantly lit and decorated churches, intricate street decorations, confetti throwing, carrying of life-size religious statues and authentic qubbajt (traditional nougats). These are great to visit, but they start with lots of loud 'bangers' (blank fireworks) on the run up to the feast day, to scare away the devil. These resonate across the valleys, so the local festas of Gharb and Ghasri, and possibly one or two more distant ones might disturb your peace for a day or two if your stay coincides with them. We used to be woken by gunfire (bird shooting) early on Spring mornings - a local sport which thankfully was outlawed a few years ago, but some people break the ban, so the odd gunshot in the spring is possible. Occasionally building noise can be heard in the mornings, depending on any work going on locally (they are great builders, but tend to start buildings and never quite get around to finishing them!). I will warn guests of anything I know of very nearby which might disturb them. Otherwise, it's just birds, cicadas and the gentle hum of nature.

Characterful house, great location
We had a fantastic 8 days. The house is in one of the quietest parts of Gozo, yet you are never more than 20 minutes from the beaches and main towns and villages. Good pool, kept clean. Friendly housekeeper every other day. The house has an historic feel and the balcony is particularly good for evening cocktails/ beers. Main downsides are no aircon (we knew that) so August is not for fainthearted. And Wi-Fi downstairs only - which challenged teenage kids!
Beautiful villa on Gozo
Beautiful well equipped villa with a lovely pool. Was perfect for our family of ten. Lots of space to enjoy.
Another wonderful holiday in my favourite place!
My friends and I returned for another wonderful week. It feels like home from home - I feel so relaxed at the house and we've created our own 'traditions' now so I wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else. A late, slow breakfast on the terrace watching the butterflies, lizards, and occasional farmer in the fields, with the sea as a backdrop, is my favourite part of our daily routine. Already looking forward to next year!
Ooops, this is embarrassing! This is my daughter's friend's review, but as they arranged the holiday directly with me and booked it on the site through my account, it's come up as my name! It isn't me, honest!!!
Great farmhouse Gozo style that met all our expectations
We really enjoyed staying in this farmhouse full of charachter. Perfect for large groups as there are many bedrooms. The location is great and piecefull, offering fine views of the valley, sunsets, and the sea. The pool was great during hot days. Doris is really nice and helpfull, and even though before the stay we didn't really see the point in having a maid coming in every day you quickly ger used to it and it's a great service helping you relax even more. So all in all, a great place that we will return to.
It is as it says a lovely old rambling traditional farmhouse with bags of character and charm
This was an ideal house for a family of 8 and could take more. Plenty of rooms, private areas, courtyard, roof top to escape to. Views across countryside and not overlooked. Pool is a good size for all activities and ages. Wonderful housekeeping service and on tap advice. We were there in July and it was hot, but a cool breeze takes some of the heat away. Walking distance to a selection of restaurants in Gharb, and local shop. The local bus service from the end of the street on the hour is excellent for those who want to be independent . Go for an early morning walk up to the lighthouse for stunning views of Gozo and you get a good perception of what the island is really like .
We all loved it.
We loved the farmhouse but there were some things that didn't suit us as a family. We were a group of 9 adults but there were only 5 sun beds and not a lot of room around the pool when everybody was together. There weren't any wardrobes or even somewhere to hang clothes in the downstairs bedroom, we ended up draping then over the put you up beds. No wardrobe in the twin room upstairs either. .Having said this we had a fabulous holiday and Doris was wonderful. The kitchen had everything we needed, lots of crockery and glassware etc. The owners were really kind and let us arrive and leave at times that suited us. This was great because you have to plan around ferry times. We love Gozo and would recommend a holiday here.
Thank you for leaving a review and I'm delighted you had a fabulous time. I hope your parents coped OK with the uneven stairs and the hot sun!
I appreciate your comments about the hanging space. We've considered a wardrobe for the twin room and ended up with the hanging space on the wall as a compromise, which is sufficient for most people's needs on holiday. But there's definitely no space for a wardrobe in the 'overflow' bedroom/ping pong room downstairs. We mainly use this for children as they tend to not be too bothered about hanging their clothes up(!) and there is a chest of drawers. So I agree, the house does work best if there are children as well as adults in a large group. Having said that, there are additional deck-chairs that can be used by the pool, although you wouldn't have known where to get them out from unless you'd asked Doris. I'll ask her to be aware of this in future and tell the guests that there are deck chairs if they want them.
Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves and found everything you needed in the kitchen.
Ghammar farmhouse is in the tiny hamlet of Ghammar, near the village of Ghasri – the most peaceful part of the island. Surrounded by wonderful country walks, including one to a tiny swimming inlet approx 0.75 miles away, the house is also within easy reach of shops (nearest 1/2 mile). Being a tiny and unspoilt island, it is only a short cycle-ride or drive (or a good walk) to wonderful beaches with crystal clear blue waters, ancient archaeological sites, beautiful churches, great restaurants, amazing scuba diving sites, traditional fishing villages, stunning sea and cliff views and an abundance of flora and fauna.
