In the centre of Portugal, at a stone´s throw of the historic town of Meruge on the foothills of the Serra da Estrella, you find our small holiday domain: Quinta do Barreiro. The Quinta consists of 4 houses: Casa de Colheres, Casa da Banda Desenhada, Casa das Marcas and Casa da Recepçao.

Quinta also has a characteristic ruin of the original Quinta. All this in an area of 10.000 m2. With a beautiful pool and bar. You can also enjoy magnificent views of the Serra.

Staying at the Quinta is staying and playing in nature, to rest, to make music, to eat and drink, simply … enjoying. An environment to enjoy pure Portugal. Herds of sheep, olive groves, uma coppa de vinho branco and tranquility. Would you like swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, hiking, biking or visiting authentic markets? You can also do this in the immediate vicinity.

Not only the Quinta but the immediate area is well worth exploring. Olive groves, traditional villages nestled between green and placed against mountain hills. The hilly region is an offshoot of the Serra da Estela. You can walk everywhere, but particularly in the Serra da Estrela, a chain of mountains with various walking routes.

The middle region of Portugal belongs to one of the most beautiful hiking areas in Europe. The landscape is authentic and adventurous. The peaks of the Serra da Estrela reach to almost 2000 metres. The slopes offer a variety of wild nature, green valleys and numerous fields. Even with the opportunity to ski in winter.

For a cultural stop you are at the right place in the historic cities of Beira Interior where the small streets may lead to an abandoned castle.

From endless walks, horse rides along rivers and valleys to canoeing on the beautiful river of Mondego. The daredevils can go mountain climbing or paragliding. But it is also possible to lie down near the water of one of the rivers or to swim.

The locals are helpful and friendly as are the prices of food and entertainment. Both Oliveira Do Hospital and Seia are located at ca. 13 kilometres and provide opportunities for shopping, to withdraw money and go to the market once a week. Well worth a visit. A little further away you also can visit the weekly market in Arganil. The markets in the area are well worth a visit.

What you really should try is to eat roasted chicken with salad, bread and wine at a market. Just to take place at one of the big tables that have been put there and to get in contact with the locals is an experience to never be forgotten.

But also one of the oldest university cities in Europe is located in less than one hour driving from Quinta. Coimbra is ideal for cultural walks (monuments, architecture) and the enjoying of alleys, cafes and the old Jewish quarter.

The Atlantic Ocean is a 1.5 hour drive. The clean beaches and beautiful coastal areas such as Aveiro and Figueira da Foz are ideally suited for a day out.
