Dana's a fine woodworker by trade, and an avid sailor, with a 34' Morgan sailboat moored in Vineyard Haven Harbor. Caron likes vegetable and flower gardening, book sales, architecture. We travel a lot ourselves and are comfortable with people all over the world.
Karen purchased this cottage in 1996
Martha's Vineyard is a safe, old- fashioned, authentic place without highways, neon signs, fast-food restaurants, large discount stores, shopping malls, or acres of parking lots. The 45 minute ferry transports you to a simpler place where people still enjoy village shopping, local agriculture, fishing, hiking, beaches. Yes, there are billionaires doing all these things too, but on MV we all look the same.
Like having your own place on the Vineyard. Clean, comfortable, and you're on your own. Easy location to find and to go anywhere on the island with shuttle bus service in front. Walk downtown to the harbor, the beach, cinema and Main St shops. Lectures, events, films, gallery openings, antiques shows all over the island, listed each week in the MVTimes newspaper.
If you're looking for the perfect place for your first stay on island or for a return visit for someone who's more islander than washashore; Chickadee cottage is a must!
.5mi from Vineyard Haven ferry, directly on the bus and bike routes, you can easily get to town or up island from the cottage without a car. The location is ideal. I brought my car but didn't drive it when going to Net Results or Art Cliff Diner.
The owners are fantastic! They thought of everything and had it in the cottage. I forgot my glasses and they even provided me with a magnifying glass (readers are too strong)!
My only hesitation in recommending the birdhouses is that this best kept secret on island will get out and will be booked for my next rental.
You won't go wrong staying in either of the birdhouse cottages!
My wife and I recently returned from a weeks stay @ Chickadee Cottage, Vineyard Haven. The accommodations and location were perfect for the two of us. The bus stopped just a couple doors down, so commuting around the island was very easy. It's a 10 minute walk to the center of Vineyard Haven for shopping and restaurants. The cottage is fully equipment with everything you'd need right down to a library of maps and informative brochures. We had cable TV (didn't watch much) and great WiFi connection. Even though we were on a main route, traffic was very light after 9PM--pretty quiet and relaxing. We had our our little secluded area to enjoy the evening and a beverage. the owners are wonderful folks, most helpful and insighful for places to see and where to eat, alough we saw very little of them. We already are looking at next year for a return visit.
Vineyard Haven is one of the 3 main 'down-island' towns, all of which have a Main St with restaurants, shops, grocery stores, cinema, banks, etc. The other 3 'up-island' towns are primarily rural. Vineyard Haven is the most year-round of the towns and is where the main ferry terminal is located. Sparrow Cottage is 1 mi north of the center of town in an older, wealthier area called West Chop.
