Beautiful home, very close to the water, the town, the harbour and the rail station.

  • 5 of 5

Great house in a great location. The owners are extremely helpful and the house is lovely and has everything you could possibly want. They left plenty of towels - more than one each - which was useful.

There's a garage at the back of the house, which we used. We had to take off our roof box to get the car in the garage, which wasn't a problem, as there's a utility room/second kitchen with lots of space and we put it in there. There are also car parks close to the house, which we could have used.

The IJsselmeer - now an enormous lake that used to be the sea before a dam was built across it - is less than a minute's walk from the house. There are several very small beaches close to the house.

There's so much to do. The town of Hoorn is beautiful, with a marina and an inner harbour, with cafes, etc. There are several old sailing barges and other boats to look at. The town has preserved its old architecture and cobbled pavements and roads.

The train goes from Hoorn to Amsterdam (30 mins) and you can walk to the station from the house. We drove up the coast to Enkhuizen (about 40 mins drive), along a very small coastal road, which turned out to be the dyke road, with great views of the water and sailing boats. We also had a day at the lovely sandy beach at Bergen aan Zee (about 40 mins drive) - small and unspoilt, but with a few cafes and an acquarium.

Not knowing any Dutch wasn't ever a problem, as English is very widely known.

Tia and Nic are very supportive and welcoming and offered to answer any questions at any point during our stay. In fact, that wasn't needed, as everything was straightforward.

Thank you, Nic and Tia, for a wonderfully relaxing break.

beautiful old house in a surprisingly lovely town

  • 5 of 5

we had an absolutely lovely time staying in Nic and Tia's house in Hoorn. The house is a fascinating old house, with lots of space and all modern facilities. Nic and Tia were so helpful and friendly, and so kind and generous. The location is right next to the beautiful "lake" (a sea if you are English - you can't see the other side) in a fascinating town, steeped in history with great restaurants and a beach area and only half an hour from Amsterdam by train (the station is just about 5 minutes walk). Despite the central location, the house was really quiet and a real haven from the bustle of Amsterdam. We had a great break here and would recommend it to anyone.

Fantastic property!

  • 5 of 5

You need to stay here! This property is fantastic, you won't be disappointed. Tia is absolutely wonderful. She answered the questions we had before we arrived and met us at the house to give us a tour and explain anything that we needed to know. This home is full of character and charm. The bedrooms are spacious and living area and kitchen are exceptional. The outside patio was the perfect spot to enjoy our morning coffee and evening glass of wine. There is plenty of space and the five of us were more than comfortable. The location is excellent, within walking distance of everything. We enjoyed the charming town of Hoorn and recommend it as a beautiful place to stay. The train to Amsterdam takes only 30 mins and the home is walking distance to the train station. Be sure to take the water taxi tour through the canals of Hoorn.

No need to look further- this property is wonderful.

A huge thanks to Tia for making our stay so spectacular.

Centrally located with lots of character

  • 4 of 5

This house is very well located with local shops, supermarket and railway station within 10 minutes walk. It is an older house, with lots of charm, but is well equipped and has it's own garage (parking is at a premium in Hoorn). In fact it is so well located that we put the car in the garage when we arrived and didn't go near it again until we left a week later.

We felt that the house was very spacious, as it can accommodate 8 people and we were only 2, but we felt very comfortable there. The living room window looks right onto the street, which had plenty of passers by, but never got rowdy. The kitchen/dining area has big glass doors that open onto a private courtyard which comes with a dining table and barbecue. The kitchen itself was very well equipped and the scullery provided for all our laundry needs.

The staircase is very traditional, in that it is fairly steep. It wasn't a problem for us (indeed it adds to the charm) but it could be a concern for some.

There are three good sized bedrooms upstairs, the beds are comfortable, the bathroom has both a bath and shower and the owners are generous with the towels. We felt that the bedrooms were a little under furnished. Although there were bedside tables the lamps that were on them were so big that there was nowhere to put a book, glasses, glass of water, etc. And though the bedside lamps were very stylish they weren't great for reading in bed. It would also have been useful to have had a small table or chest of drawers to put things on / in. On the plus side there was a hanging rail in each room, so plenty of space to hang clothes up.

The owner, Tia, was very quick to answer any queries we had beforehand and very helpful in solving a wifi problem that occurred while we were there. Hoorn is a lovely, interesting town, with lots to see and do and this was a great place to be based.

Fantastisch huis als uitvalbasis om Noord Holland te ontdekken!!!

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Gerne immer wieder...

Car: not necessary

In the immediate vicinity are many museums, which are attractive for young and old.

How about a trip by steam train through the beautiful West Frisian landscape and along the many beautiful villages?

For children it is great to spend a whole day in Fairytale Wonderland, 20 minutes from Hoorn by car or train.

Hoorn is located directly on the Markermeer, former Zuiderzee, so a great place for water sports enthusiasts!

You can swim in different places.

The old center of Hoorn consists of many beautiful monumental buildings from the time of the VOC. A lust for the eye!

Throughout the city center you will find cozy terraces everywhere where you can enjoy a snack and a drink during the summer as well as in the winter.

In summer there are a lot of activities organized in the city center, there is always something to do. On Wednesday a theme market and throughout the year there is a market on every Saturday with many different stalls.

In July and August there is every Thursday Cheese Market on the square the Roode Steen, where you see Dutch cheese girls walking around and cheese carriers carry the heavy cheeses, where the cheeses are weighed in "the old Waegh" and are sold. Worth a visit, and all within walking distance.

In the month of August, the city center of Hoorn each year for 10 days in the sign of the Hoornse Fair. This is one of the largest fairgrounds in the Netherlands and an experience for young and old. Fun fair attractions have been set up throughout the city, including for the house. It brings a lot of fun with it. Traditionally on the last Friday evening of the fairground a large firework display on the banks of the Markermeer, just behind the house. And the fair is closed on the third Monday of August with Lappendag. It is a big party in the city with many market stalls that offer their goods extra cheap, all terraces are full and the music sounds from all the pubs where the beer and wine is richly served.

The "Horinese people" really enjoy cosiness and good food. You will also find many different restaurants in Hoorn. There is something for everyone, from simple restaurants to fancy food with a Michelin star. And many nationalities are represented, so whatever you want to eat, there is always a suitable restaurant for you to find within walking distance.

And of course you should not miss a visit to Amsterdam, which is easily reached in 30 minutes by car or train.

In the spring you can also fully enjoy the many beautifully colored bulb fields in the area.
