CANYAMEL PLATJA (Canyamel beach)
Family friendly Canyamel Platja is a small town that is divided by the river Estany, also called Torrent de Canyamel. This river is home to a colony of water fowl including ducks and geese. The river flows through an area that is simply beautiful, before disappearing miraculously as it reaches the beach.
The town facilities include free parking, a health spa, three mini supermarkets, bakery, pharmacy, car rental and of course many restaurants and bars. There are also two chiringuitos or beach restaurants that serve food, ice creams and drinks from breakfast time until midnight.
The sandy beach has free wifi, sunbeds and umbrellas with attached security boxes to rent. At Easter it also boasts a beach volleyball academy for those who want to learn or just to play. It goes without saying that the sea is warm and generally calm but in the late afternoon the onshore breeze creates small waves that are good for body-boarding. In spring, autumn and winter the late afternoon waves become large enough to attract surfers.
Canyamel is within 20 minutes drive of 5 towns. Each town has a different character with shops, street markets, restaurants, bars, beaches, sports centres and of course supermarkets. The nearest Lidl supermarket is located at the entrance to Cala Ratjada. It is approximately 10 minutes drive from Canyamel.
Manacor is the regional capital and the second largest town on the island of Mallorca. It is not a particularly attractive town but you will find it has a lot of everything – banks, shops, cafes, bars, car rental and railway station. It is also home to Rafa Nadal’s world famous tennis academy which was recently opened by Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer. It is being said that Rafa’s famous coach ‘Tio Toni’ will become the main coach at the academy from the end of 2017; Cala Ratjada is a bustling seaside town that caters for the holiday crowd and the locals who visit for the weekend. If you pass the harbor and continue to hug the coast for 2 miles you will come to Cala Gat, a tiny cove with a patch of sand and a beach bar serving drinks and food. It is truly lovely and a terrific place to wile away the time; Arta is a market town (famous for the caves). If you drive through Arta you will see nothing particularly interesting. However, if you park your car and walk towards the banks and market area you will find that Arta is lovely with an enormous number of cafes, restaurants and craft shops. The town is also overlooked by an enormous and beautiful monastery. Arta is only 10 minutes drive from Canyamel; Porto Cristo is a large coastal town with a working harbor and the home of Rafa Nadal. It is a large old town predominantly built on the hills around the harbor. The harbor is home to working boats and the yachts of the wealthy who live on the cliffs above. There are some lovely restaurants and cafes around the harbor which serve fresh seasonal fish; Cala Millor is a sprawling resort focused around a wide bay with an enormous sandy beach. I would say that the town is lacking character but many of the hotels facing the beach have a lovely atmosphere with live music and reasonable food. There are also some terrific restaurants on the edge of town that cater for locals and therefore have a great selection of authentic Spanish food, priced for the local pocket. Canyamel itself has 12 clay tennis courts. There are also 3 golf courses and 2 spas within 10 minutes drive of the town
