Why Alan George chose County Down

Newcastle is very unique place nestling between the mountains and the sea. With great outdoor activities, incredible scenery and friendly and welcoming people it's a lovely place to visit. Our apartment is equally welcoming and will be a perfect base for your stay long or short.

Newcastle nestles at the feet of the Mourne mountains. it is the gateway to an area of natural beauty adjacent to marvellous coastal scenery and beaches, with easy access to Tollymore and Castlewellan forest parks and miles of wonderful walking in the Mourne mountains themselves. This brand new modern apartment is fully equipped and within easy reach to all the area has to offer. For golfers Royal County Down golf course is only 5 minutes drive away. Birdwatchers and nature lovers can roam the Murlough reserve especially rich in the autumn and winter seasons. Hikers will be spoiled for choice with trails. Historians and the spiritually sensitive are only 30 min from the many ancient sites connected with Patrick and early settlements around Srangford Lough. Newcastle is only a small town but has all the shopping you will need plus a great choice of fabulous restaurants in the area. For an action packed or quiet reflective holiday in an outstanding natural environment look no further!

Golf: Royal County Down is located in one of the world’s most naturally beautiful links settings in the Murlough Nature Reserve. Against the magnificent backdrop of the Mountains of Mourne, the links stretches along the shores of Dundrum Bay, zigzagging back and forth to provide a different vista from virtually every hole.

The narrowest ribbons of fairways thread their way through as impressive a set of sand dunes as could be imagined. The fairways are surrounded by purple heather and golden gorse, so beautiful to look at but so punishing for any who may stray from the prescribed path. The finest of all links courses, it offers a stern challenge from the championship tees. From the Stableford tees it offers golfers of all standards the opportunity of playing a truly great course with dramatic panorama of the surrounding mountains and coastline.

The Annesley Links at Royal County Down shares the same magnificent setting as the Championship Links and is full of character. Although much shorter than the Championship Links, it is still a very testing course, with magnificent views of sea, mountains and dune land.

Founded in 1889 Golf Digest described it as the best course in the world outside of the United States.

There are many more fantastic courses within easy driving distance.

Excellent location in quiet residential area close to Newcastle. Wonderful views of Donard.

We had a four night stay. The apartment was well equipped , modern and very tastefully furnished and most importantly very clean. It provided an ideal base from which to access the surrounding area and Newcastle. Have no hesitation recommending it . We would love to return at a later date as we found so much to explore. The only criticism I would make is there was a lack of information on recycling and use / location of bins. Excellent in every way . Thank you for enabling us to have such a lovely refreshing break. The perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

Extremely comfortable, modern 2 bedroom apartment with the most amazing view of the Mourne mountains from the lounge area. Fully equipped kitchen, comfortable lounge/ dining area. Two lovely bedrooms, one ensuite and main bathroom with bath. Beds extremely comfortable and not a sound at night. Alan, the owner was there to meet us with keys etc, very friendly and charming. The apartment is about 7 minutes walk from the main street, promenade and beach. The Anchor bar and O'Hares bars, both with live music are 5 minutes walk away. All in all, we would highly recommend this apartment and would love to stay there again. As a native of Newcastle, this ticked all the boxes.

Lovely accommodation in superbe location

  • 4 of 5

A view of the mountains that is second to none; very convenient for the centre of the village. Well maintained property in which we felt very relaxed. Well equipped kitchen, good size main bedroom with an ensuite room and a second bathroom. Beds comfortable. Only minor awkward thing was that the only hanging space in second bedroom was a couple of wall hooks. Friendly owner. Really enjoyed our short break.

Met by Alan with warm smile and a great welcome. Very spacious and comfortable with everything that we needed. Great views of the Mourne mountains, and short walk to the shops. Looking forward to staying here again when we come back. Highly recommended.

Great for the Family

  • 5 of 5

Myself wife and 2 kids (5 & 7) stayed here for a weekend break.

the location was amazing, 5 / 10 minute walk to the centre of town, with the usual shops, arcades, pubs and restaurants.

Also you can go 5 / 10 minutes the other direction and you are in the middle of nature on a walk along side the river bringing you into the mourne mountains.

Alan was great very friendly and responsive on the led up to our trip and met us on the day we arrived to answer any questions. The apartment was clean and very spacious, it is bigger than the pictures led you to believe.

The view from the living room was amazing and really made you feel like you where experiencing a holiday. At the front of the property there is a maintained garden which is closed of to the public which meant the kids could play outside and we could keep an eye on them from the window.

All in All a great trip and when i am going to Newcastle again i would stay in the same location. I have already recommended it to my family and friends as somewhere to stay.
