Superb accomodation in a beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

We’d been to Yorkshire a couple of times, but never to the North York Moors. We “Googled” “self catering holidays near Pickering” wading through many websites before deciding on “Ashfield Cottages” in Lockton and we certainly weren’t disappointed. We stayed in Cottage Three which is a beautifully furnished, fully equipped and immaculately clean and cosy Yorkshire stone building with a lovely garden. We were sorry to leave this “home from home” cottage but, rest assured, we’ll be back. The owners, Carol & Simon who live on site were always on hand for advice and help. We couldn’t have wished for more caring and friendly hosts.

Lockton is a small village on the edge of the North York Moors in a delightfully tranquil setting. We found it ideally located to explore the moors and coastal areas. There’s also the North York Moors stream heritage railway and it took us only about 15 minutes to reach Levisham station for a steam train journey on to Whitby.

There are also two excellent restaurants within a mile of Lockton and the attractive town of Pickering is only about 5 miles away with plenty of cafes and restaurants to cater for all tastes, plus Indian and Chinese takeaways. A large Co-Op, Lidl and various smaller grocers, bakers and family butchers provide all that might be needed to “cook at home”.

Exploring the moors villages and walking on the moors is within easy reach of Lockton and the nearby Dalby Forest is wonderful for walks and more adventurous outdoor pursuits and there is also a superb play area for children. Whitby and Scarborough are not far away and for children there is Flamingo Land with its Adventure Playground and Zoo only about 20 minutes away by car. Sealife at Scarborough is great for all the family and also an easy drive from Lockton. In addition, as members of both English Heritage and National Trust we took advantage of the area being rich in properties to visit. We also spent a wonderful day at Durham and another at York both about an hour from Lockton.

There was so much to see and do and, in the end we were so sorry to leave.

Perfect cottage and superb location

  • 5 of 5

This is by far the nicest holiday cottage we have ever stayed in. We never used to stay in the same place twice, but we are planning our third visit to Ashfield! Carol and Simon are so friendly and welcoming and the cottage is always spotlessly clean and beautifully presented. The location is fabulous, such a peaceful village location but with a playpark and a tea room just around the corner. The village itself Is very close to Pickering, Dalby, and Thornton le dale, all excellent places to visit. Just a short drive over the stunning moors.... falling foss, Whitby, Scarborough and Sandsend are favourites too.The fox and rabbit and horseshoe pubs serve excellent food and are walking distance from the cottage. The cottage and the location are just perfect!

Owner's Response: Thankyou for your kind review about your recent stay at Ashfield Cottages, Lockton. It is always a pleasure to have guests return and to know that they are happy with the accommodation and all what the surrouding area has to offer. At the moment the North York Moors are a glorious sight, with a mass of purple covered heather, this can be enjoyed by a walk from the cottages or a ride out on the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, which travels from the market town of Pickering to the seaside resort of Whitby. We shall look forward to you and your family returning and staying with us again in the future. Kind Regards Carol & Simon

Excellent short break !

  • 5 of 5

Perfect cottage ! Lovely owners Carol and Simon, very helpful, cottage was spotlessly clean , all facilities, dishwasher, washing machine and electric fire which we did not need to use but if the weather was cool in the evenings it would have been great just to turn it on if radiators were not in operation like in some cottages we've stayed in . So peaceful and to have breakfast in the garden was a real delight. Lockton is a quiet village , no pub but a little tea room open 4 days but a short distance to two excellent pubs that serve very good food . Excellent walks from the cottage door , will certainly return , and after completing 40 miles wAlking in total over 3 days we had wonderful nights sleep in the comfortable bed with a bonus of the moors view from the loo ! ThAnk you again .

Great cottage, great location for the NY Moors.

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for somewhere nice near Pickering to take our two children, aged 1 and 3. Cottage Three is lovely and is stocked with everything you might need including kitchen stuff and games too. The outside space is great (there is also a good children's play area five minutes walk away). Carol was so helpful when we needed her. Ashfield Cottages ticked all the boxes for us. We would recommended cottage three. Martin & Kim, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
